Teachers Teaching Teachers #169 - More about diigo, annotations and on-line, ongoing research - 9.23.09

Post-Show description:

Chief Diigo Ambassador, Maggie Tsai joined us on this Wednesday evening, late in September. About a month before, we had a lively conversation about research and diigo: Teachers Teaching Teachers #165 - 08.26.09 - Meet Lisa Dick and George Haines: Talking about research and diigo.

We wanted to talk to Maggie because some of the teachers who use Youth Voices had begun to use Diigo, and we wanted to get together on this webcast to talk about how it is going, and what our plans with students are with this bookmarking site. Please enjoy, and add a comment about how you build your students’ research muscles, and how you use diigo. And tune in to future episodes of Teachers Teaching Teachers. This thread of I-Search, on-going research, Diigo, social bookmarking, and use of library databases promises to be a rich vein of inquiry for us this year.

21:31:49 Fred Haas: @Susan - I can fire it up.
21:31:57 SusanEttenheim: pls do fred!
21:32:04 joycevalenza: there are actually two divides with this
21:32:05 Fred Haas: Sorry I was doing a couple things at once.
21:32:14 joycevalenza: one is the database/book barrier
21:32:25 SusanEttenheim: welcome back curtis
21:32:48 joycevalenza: the other is the huge difference between what we consider appropriate documentation and bookmarking
21:33:19 chris sloan: interesting point.   I'd like to know more about appropriate documentation and bookmarkding
21:34:42 drkasal: I can't copy/paste links from this chat either
21:35:04 SusanEttenheim: just drag text into this chat room instead of copying and pasting
21:35:49 Paul Allison: http://www.google.com/notebook/public/04712752710140234617/BDRqfSgoQquKe...
21:36:06 drkasal: how do you get link OUT of chat into address bar?
21:37:03 SusanEttenheim: ahh you can highlight and drag
21:37:11 SusanEttenheim: hi islandgirl welcome!
21:37:46 islandgirl: Thanks it's my first time here.
21:38:01 SusanEttenheim: where and what do you teach?
21:38:33 islandgirl: I'm in Texas and I teach Technology Applications at the Elementary level.
21:38:51 SusanEttenheim: welcome!
21:38:57 carolteach4: @islangirl - what applications do you teach?
21:39:33 islandgirl: At the beginning of the school year it is mostly Foundations.
21:39:50 Cathy E: @islandgirl I am an elementary tech facilitator in North Carolina
21:40:39 islandgirl: Awesome! So do you teach in a classroom or do you oversee your Technology Support Teachers in your district?
21:40:57 carolteach4: @islandgirl-can you elaborate on "foundations"
21:42:10 islandgirl: Certainly.  Foundations is primarily the "basics" of computing.  Naming the parts of a computer, identifying symbols of technology and mouse-clicking basics.
21:42:20 SusanEttenheim: Diigo tutorials http://www?.google.co?m/notebook?/public/04?7127527101?40234617/B?DRqfSg... 9:39 PM   this is a very good tutorial  http://www?.slideshar?e.net/clio?tech/diigo?-tutorial-?presentati?on 9:40 PM   Why social bookmarking  tutorial http://www?.youtube.c?om/watch?v?=kcecBgRd3?ig&wat?ch_respons?e
21:42:24 carolteach4: I noticed Paul dropped in a google notebook file. Mine is gradfathered, but I'm sad that Google stopped notebook for new users.
21:42:28 islandgirl: That is for Pk, K and 1st.
21:43:04 islandgirl: 2-5 is the foundations of homerow keys and keyboarding lessons.
21:43:50 carolteach4: @island girl - thanks- we take it for granted that kids will be strong in foundation skills when they get to middle school, but that isn't always the case.
21:44:13 SusanEttenheim: hi mike welcome!
21:44:20 islandgirl: Exactly.  That is why it is critical to lay down a good solid foundation.
21:44:53 islandgirl: Foundations also include Internet Safety rules and what it takes to have good CyberCitizenship.
21:45:14 carolteach4: @islandgirl - I also hope you are talking very early on about good ethics in posting - wow - you answered my question as I was writing it.
21:45:43 SusanEttenheim: welcome mike
21:45:49 Mike D.: Hi everyone - Better late than never lol
21:45:52 carolteach4: Good CyberCitizenship has to start early and be repeated over and over.
21:46:02 Curtis: There's a reference to a service that sounds like "Gale"....what is this/
21:46:08 SusanEttenheim: mike please introduce yourself - where and what do you teach?
21:46:09 islandgirl: Absolutely, I agree.
21:46:23 SusanEttenheim: maybe it is Gale?
21:46:36 SusanEttenheim: one of the Gale databases?
21:46:48 Curtis: Unfamiliar with this...it's a database?
21:46:53 Mike D.: I'm the librarian for Samuel Gompers CTE High School in the South Bronx
21:47:02 SusanEttenheim: welcome Mike!
21:47:23 SusanEttenheim: mike have you used diigo?
21:47:31 Mike D.: Yes
21:47:34 Mike D.: Extensively
21:47:46 SusanEttenheim: with groups of students? how have you used it?
21:48:00 carolteach4: Like so many other formerly free services, will diigo be going to a subscription fee?
21:48:14 Mike D.: I haven't used it with students yet, I've used delicious with students but haven't had a chance to work with them on Diigo yet - it's a little newer
21:48:36 SusanEttenheim: carolI don't think there's been any conversation about that now? does anyone disagree from what we've heard?
21:49:10 SusanEttenheim: yes mike - many of us are delicious users trying to use diigo now to share
21:49:33 Mike D.: The way I'd envision using it with students is teaching them to embed their sources in an online medium and to track discretely what sources are being used for projects
21:49:48 SusanEttenheim: what questions/comments do any of you have for maggie ?
21:50:16 Mike D.: Joyce! A joy to see you!
21:50:26 SusanEttenheim: ahh joyce want to comment on what mike just said?
21:51:50 Mike D.: Slideshare is great
21:52:01 SusanEttenheim: how have you used it mike?
21:52:13 carolteach4: Yes, specifics, please
21:52:26 SusanEttenheim: mike do you have skype?
21:52:37 joycevalenza: thank you!
21:52:38 SusanEttenheim:  can I call you in to share?
21:52:42 Mike D.: I've used it personally to build presentations and posted them online - what is particularly nice is its synchronization tool to put narration to each slide - its worked well.
21:53:03 Mike D.: I'm on skype now
21:53:22 carolteach4: @mike - is slide share with narration sort of like PhotoStory3 but web based?
21:53:24 SusanEttenheim: what's your skype id?
21:53:30 Fred Haas: One second
21:53:34 islandgirl: I am a relatively new Tech Teacher.  Yet, I have already set up an account for most of the Web tools being mentioned here.
21:53:46 SusanEttenheim: wonderful island girl
21:53:47 islandgirl: I do need ideas as to how to use these with my students.
21:53:49 Mike D.: mdodes
21:54:12 islandgirl: I still need to get acquianted with Skype
21:54:17 Mike D.: I haven't used Photostory3 before, its a good way to embed presentations in web pages and posts.
21:54:30 SusanEttenheim: haha I can't believe that I didn't realize it was you Mike!
21:54:32 Mike D.: slideshare I mean, I can't comment on its similarity to Photostory
21:54:44 islandgirl: PhotoStory 3 is great and very user-friendly.
21:55:27 islandgirl: Slideshare is to upload all of your presentations whether they were created with P.Point or PhotoStory 3
21:56:55 SusanEttenheim: islandgirl do you have skype?
21:57:04 SusanEttenheim: we'd love to hear your slideshare too
21:57:11 SusanEttenheim: are you using it inside diigo?
21:57:13 carolteach4: I am familiar with slide share in that I've looked at many and borrowed some to embed in my blog, but the way the young lady was talking, I though she was saying there was a slideshare feature in Diigo  -did I misunderstand?
21:57:27 SusanEttenheim: there is carol
21:57:55 carolteach4: Oh - thanks - so I didn't misunderstand
21:58:18 SusanEttenheim: islandgirl have you used a slide share feature in diigo?
21:58:19 Mike D.: So confused - that's what I get for coming in late
21:58:19 carolteach4: Looks like I have a great deal more to learn
21:58:27 Mike D.: Sorry for that
21:58:38 SusanEttenheim: great to have you Mike D!
21:58:39 islandgirl: Before I knew there was SlideShare I was posting my presentations on my website.  I loved the idea of sharing so I uploaded them and made them available to those who visited my site.  They could view and download the ones they needed.
21:58:40 Fred Haas: I'm Sorry I can't get the mic to work
21:58:45 joycevalenza: sounds cool.  I must say goodnight.  Thank you for hosting this discussion!
21:58:52 SusanEttenheim: fred what's going on with your skype? we can't hear you!
21:59:02 SusanEttenheim: fred - go back to the sys pref
21:59:17 SusanEttenheim: and in skype just click skype?> preferences
21:59:18 islandgirl: I have not used the slideshare feature in Diigo yet.  I was talking about SlideShare.
21:59:27 SusanEttenheim: and click on the input and output to activate it
21:59:49 SusanEttenheim: night joyce thanks for joining us!
22:00:55 carolteach4: very mello
22:01:10 SusanEttenheim: fred _ I can probably help you with that
22:01:13 SusanEttenheim: email me
22:01:21 SusanEttenheim: [email protected]
22:01:49 SusanEttenheim: not sure what's going on but we have macs on active directory too
22:01:54 SusanEttenheim: if that's what you mean
22:02:20 Mike D.: I'm sorry for being late, Wednesdays are a tough night for me
22:02:37 SusanEttenheim: what cool stuff are you doing mike?
22:03:12 Curtis: Thanks for the discussion-good topic-will investigate Diigo more and look forward to maybe a second session with Maggie
22:03:24 SusanEttenheim: join us anytime curtis!
22:03:30 SusanEttenheim: are you going to the oct meeting?
22:03:45 Curtis: Which meeting Susan
22:03:52 Mike D.: I'm trying to just put forth the research project as something interesting that students can begin to tackle themselves on an exploratory level
22:04:24 Mike D.: Research projects from what I'm seeing right now are very rigidly structured at the moment, I think structure is important, but flexibility is needed too
22:05:02 Mike D.: I think that's the most important discussion to have - the technology will serve our purposes once we have a solid ideology and approach.
22:05:15 Fred Haas: Thanks all. Sorry about the technical issues.
22:05:32 SusanEttenheim: thanks for joining us everyone!
22:06:02 islandgirl: Thanks for sharing new insights!
22:06:59 islandgirl: I look forward to learning more about Diigo and other web tools in the months to come.
22:07:35 islandgirl: Good Night Susan and fellow teachers :D
22:07:42 SusanEttenheim: join us again! nice to meet you!]
22:07:46 SusanEttenheim: goodnight!
22:08:01 islandgirl: Will do...next week, right?
