21:32:43 SusanEttenheim: what draws you to it and to this type of group julie?
21:33:12 PeggyG: http://www.screencast.com/users/Jaderader/folders/Jing/media/8ce6a225-66... this was the photoshop screencast that really helped me :-)
21:33:19 Julie Lee: i have some really advanced students and looking for some more innovative ways to motivate them
21:33:54 Gail Desler: @PeggyG - heading in to screencast
21:34:12 PeggyG: great idea Susan! using a website to begin their digital portfolio
21:34:38 PeggyG: haven't heard of sproutbuilder
21:35:42 Scott Shelhart: http://sproutbuilder.com/
21:36:01 PeggyG: I saw a blog post by Alan Levine this past week where he used Cool Iris/PicLens to create a presentation that included slides, photos and video and voiceover that would make an amazing and creative student portfolio
21:36:39 Scott Shelhart: I only use Piclens as a viewer.  I didn't know it would do all of that
21:37:02 PeggyG: http://cogdogblog.com/stuff/techtools09/ Alan Levine's presentation--really amazing!
21:37:23 PeggyG: http://cogdogblog.com/2009/02/07/cooliris-presentation/ Alan's explanation of how he created it.
21:38:06 SusanEttenheim: yes scott - have you seen it?
21:38:31 PeggyG: incomplete work can be very encouraging to students and keeps them from feeling overwhelmed
21:38:52 Scott Shelhart: Watching on monitor #2 now...
21:39:12 PeggyG: you'll be hooked Scott!
21:39:37 Scott Shelhart: bookmarked in diigo for later.  Thanks Peggy!

21:39:39 SusanEttenheim: thanks for the links peggy..
21:39:52 SusanEttenheim: gail more about that?
21:40:00 PeggyG: yes Alan is an expert on using the tools for digital storytelling
21:40:10 Gail Desler: Let me find the link
21:40:27 PeggyG: are teachers using the posted work for grades?
21:40:53 SusanEttenheim: not positive what you mean peggy but for me all "turning in" has now become publishing
21:40:56 PeggyG: you're such a fast learner Scott! good for you to use the Diigo read later bookmark
21:40:58 SusanEttenheim: so yes
21:41:23 PeggyG: just thinking about the unfinished work being posted and how that might be factored into grading
21:41:31 SusanEttenheim: ahhh
21:41:50 Scott Shelhart: Diigo is linked to delicious...and friendfeed...and my blog.... Yep, I'm hooked
21:42:12 PeggyG: absolutely Scott! :-)
21:42:18 SusanEttenheim: scott i'm a delicious fanatic but have not been able to really want diigo.. what makes you love both?
21:42:42 PeggyG: so many more features on Diigo and they automatically also post to delicious--so I use both
21:42:59 SusanEttenheim: so you use diigo first peggy?
21:43:14 Scott Shelhart: I like the social groups in Diigo, but enjoy the simplicity of delicious (especially on my phone).  I use both depending on the situation
21:43:14 PeggyG: yes diigo first
21:43:39 SusanEttenheim: scott when would you not use deliciious?
21:43:39 PeggyG: I can highlight, describe, annotate and share with specific groups and highlights and notes show up for them
21:43:45 Scott Shelhart: If I bookmark in diigo, it bookmarks in delicious automatically
21:43:54 Gail Desler: @ Susan - here's the 50 ways link http://cogdogroo.wikispaces.com/StoryTools
21:43:56 SusanEttenheim: humm
21:44:00 PeggyG: I only post to delicious because many of my friends still only use delicious
21:44:08 SusanEttenheim: thanks gail!
21:44:49 PeggyG: Diigo is an amazing research tool when you want students to collaborate on their research
21:45:05 PeggyG: it's much more than sharing bookmarks
21:45:35 Gail Desler: @PeggyG I'm still trying to get my brain wrapped around Diigo
21:45:55 PeggyG: oh key words :-) that would make a great Wordle!
21:46:25 PeggyG: we had a great diigo conversation with lots of followup links on the Classroom 2.0 LIVE show last Saturday
21:46:46 PeggyG: Jennifer Dorman was our special guest and she is an expert Diigo user with students
21:47:38 PeggyG: http://live.classroom20.com/1/post/2009/02/using-tags-and-saving-resourc...
21:49:07 PeggyG: are people using the What's Up section?
21:50:43 PeggyG: What are you working on? What are you thinking now? What's up questions to guide them.
21:51:52 PeggyG: there are some real glimpses into what is important in the students' lives :-)
21:52:00 SusanEttenheim: hey gail...
21:52:12 Gail Desler: Having connectivity issues.
21:52:33 PeggyG: you have to read between the lines a lot because their posts are very brief sometimes...
21:53:14 PeggyG: gallery walk--very creative idea!
21:53:35 PeggyG: they could create a Jing project to show it
21:53:47 Gail Desler: Thanks @PeggyG for all the great resources. I'll try to join next Classroom 2.0 LIVE.  Heard Jennifer Dorman do Diiigo session at NECC
21:54:17 SusanEttenheim: excuse the interruption... but how are the voices balanced now? Is everyone equally loud now?
21:54:25 PeggyG: would love to have you join us--we're having some great conversations! This Saturday we'll focus on Skype in the classroom
21:54:32 PeggyG: voices are great now
21:54:40 SusanEttenheim: are they more even?
21:54:51 PeggyG: everyone is--can't hear Susan much
21:54:58 Gail Desler: LIghts are flickering now and power is in and out - so night all
21:54:58 PeggyG: just not talking
21:55:04 SusanEttenheim: ok thanks
21:55:06 PeggyG: good night Gail
21:55:13 SusanEttenheim: night gail
21:55:35 Scott Shelhart: I have to go also.  3AM comes way too early!  G'nite all.
21:55:39 PeggyG: passage paper?
21:55:48 SusanEttenheim: scott- why 3am?
21:55:51 PeggyG: Good night Scott--always great to see you
21:56:13 Scott Shelhart: Thanks Peggy.  See you soon
21:56:49 PeggyG: if they had other alternatives besides the written essay/passage that could be very motivating
21:57:56 PeggyG: kids like to talk about how the books might be relevant today in their lives
21:59:03 PeggyG: the student posts that use the leading questions/sentence starters seem to be more substantive than the one who say I'm reading... and I'm on page... and so far it's boring.
21:59:13 fred_haas: @PeggyG - My thoughts were to have them adapt their work into somehting that was far more personal; what the book meant to them.
21:59:28 PeggyG: I love that idea Fred!! Makes so much sense!
22:01:23 PeggyG: very well articulated! kids have problems taking what they know and structure it into an essay--that's exactly what they need to learn to be successful on those tests :-)
22:02:12 fred_haas: These hours really go quickly.
22:02:58 PeggyG: the skills are very similar whether they are organizing their ideas for a video or for an essay--they need to learn how to do that so why not do it with content that is very nmotivating to them
22:03:53 PeggyG: the roleplaying ideas for writing last week were fantastic!
22:05:09 PeggyG: they want to bring their personal lives and experiences into what they are reading
22:05:23 SusanEttenheim: so true
22:05:34 PeggyG: they could even quote their teacher :-)
22:06:37 PeggyG: I hope you'll keep talking on TTT :-) these are great conversations!
22:07:34 PeggyG: is it challenging with Youth Voices to have the students change mid-year when the semester changes?
22:08:16 PeggyG: how does it affect the continuity? do you repeat assignments and start over with the new group?
22:09:04 PeggyG: thinking out loud is a great thing!! :-) keep doing it!
22:09:33 PeggyG: is there a link for the screenwriting class that we could access?
22:10:35 fred_haas: @Peggy G - Unfortunately no. It is all wrapped up in Blackboard.
22:10:55 PeggyG: I thought that might be the case. So sorry :-(
22:11:03 SusanEttenheim: night everyone!
22:11:20 PeggyG: Thank you all for sharing your experiences and thinking! Very interesting!
22:11:31 PeggyG: all of the sound is good!
22:11:44 PeggyG: good night all
22:11:51 fred_haas: good night
