Week of January 23-29, 2010

Welcome to this week's EdTechTalk (ETT) newsletter. The big news this week is the conference taking place in Philadelphia at the Science Leadership Academy. Educon2.2 is in its third year, and is billed as both a conference and a conversation. Five hundred educators from around the nation (and a smattering from abroad) are participating in this conference. Although this conference is billed as "not a technology conference", technology is everywhere. I virtually took part in the Friday evening panel discussion at the Franklin Institute entitled, "What Is Smart?" with five experts in the field. I virtually attended the Saturday morning keynote by Marilyn Perez, Regional Superintendent - Central Region, School District of Philadelphia. Then I chose to attend Brian Crosby's session, "Elementary School In The 21st Century - How Does The Pedagogy Change? How Does That School Look, Or Not Look?".
I'm sure upcoming shows will feature content from Educon2.2.

Today, Danielle Wozniak, Assitant Professor in the UM School of Social Work, discussed her thoughts on developing online community and utilizing online supplements in her graduate and undergraduate courses.

If you were itching to include gaming in your curriculum, what would you do? Susan and I, and others in the New York City Writing Project started by having a conversation with some pretty smart people earlier this month on Teachers Teaching Teachers. We met most of these educators in November 2009 at the National Writing Project's "Digital Is..." Conference, which was an invitational one-day conference supported by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation's Digital Media and Learning Initiative.

On this podcast we are joined by these amazing folks:

  • Barry Joseph and Rafi Santo from Global Kids.
  • Jonathan Richter and Peggy Marconi who are working together at the Oregon Writing Project at the University of Oregon.
  • New York City Public School teachers, Al Doyle and Shantanu Saha

This week Cammy Bean interviewed Robert Squires about how he became involved in Instructional Design as well as current design projects.

Texts mentioned in the discussion:

Mark Pegrum: From Blogs to Bombs

Brinck, Gergle and Wood: Designing Websites that Work: Usability for the Web
