Women of the Web #111 with Jeremy Davis

Post-Show description:

This week Women of the Web 2 welcomed guest Jeremy Davis, "20 To  Watch" 2008 award winner, finalist for the Project Tomorrow Innovation in Education Award as High Impact Teacher for Orange County in 2008, and creator of Virtual Technology Teacher http://virtualtechnologyteacher.com. Jeremy is currently a Coordinator for Instructional Technology for  the Anaheim City School District in Orange County, California. In spite of some Skype challenges and audio difficulties at the beginning of the show, Jeremy and Jen persevered with some awesome conversation about Jeremy's exciting activities with teachers and students. Jeremy shared strategies for engaging administrators and teachers with technology, creative teacher-led professional development suggestions, and ideas for making effective use of COWs (computers on wheels). His online videos of model technology lessons are fantastic resources for teachers and students of all ages. WOW2 links on Delicious: http://delicious.com/WOW2.0

20:39:45 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: Hey Dave
20:40:01 DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: Hi jen
20:40:10 DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: Are you streaming anything yet?
20:42:36 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: nope
20:42:51 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: I am not sure who is streaming -- but Sharon said they would not start until 10 minutes before the hour
20:43:21 DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: no problem.  I have you on the projection system for the class to see :-)
20:43:56 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: Hello Class
20:43:59 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: :)
20:44:16 DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: Out of curiosity, tonight we were talking about social networking and PLNs, where do you see those as far as importance when it comes to technology integration?
20:44:57 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: Well, it depends on the grade level
20:45:13 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: I mean -- a PLN --
20:45:13 DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: We also had a short discussion about providing "equal access" to the digital world means...or could mean...or different takes on it.
20:45:23 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: Hi all! Great to see you!
20:45:25 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: I think PLN's are very helpful
20:45:25 DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: Hi Peggy
20:45:29 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: Hey Peggy
20:45:38 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: yet -- I think you need to still sift what you are given
20:45:52 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: it is VERY easy to let a PLN direct your route and easy to lose yourself
20:45:55 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: Hi Jen--Lorna says Jeremy is on and ready for your call :-)
20:46:11 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: I don't have lorna's info --
20:46:22 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: just a sec
20:46:50 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: sorry -- Class, juggling skype windows
20:47:16 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: lornacos1
20:47:29 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: got it
20:48:37 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: anyway
20:48:48 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: smiles -- I might not be the best person to ask about PLN's   :)
20:48:56 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: so let me see your other question   :)
20:50:09 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: As for equal access......perhaps
20:51:29 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: as for equal access--- hmm, is that truly a possibility??
20:52:33 christine -> -EdTechTalk: equal access is so important for kid's self worth
20:52:40 DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: Exactly, but it is a NETS-T statement (someplace in there) and in the ICT-Lit targets for many states, including ours.  So we were talking about what it could mean.  such as providing "digital experiences" for all students.
20:52:49 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: so glad to have Dave C's class join us tonight!
20:52:57 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: I think as educators -- we have to have equal access.....
20:53:14 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: for our students
20:53:24 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: however, we cannot demand or expect that from parents to do the same
20:53:35 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: hope I am making sense
20:53:53 christine -> -EdTechTalk: Yes, you are
20:53:58 DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: Right!  Which can mean making sure there is differenciated homework for those students w/o access in the home.
20:54:15 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: yes
20:54:22 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: we are starting the stream
20:54:34 christine -> -EdTechTalk: It's surprising how kids who you would expect to have computers don't, or their computer breaks down
20:55:40 DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: My class is on its way into the room now.
20:56:09 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: can you hear the stream??
20:56:11 greenescience -> -EdTechTalk: hello
20:56:18 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: we're working on a skype problem--audio not good yet
20:56:58 Lorna -> -EdTechTalk: how is the sound
20:57:41 DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: We're hearing you here in NH
20:57:48 Lorna -> -EdTechTalk: thanks Dave
20:58:01 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: excellent Dave C-thanks for the feedback
20:58:39 DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: 8 students.
20:58:56 DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: Grad students in a M.Ed program
20:59:00 mrsdurff -> -EdTechTalk: virtual coffee  refills all around
20:59:13 DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: They have computers in front of them, so you will see their names in the room, but only I'm streaming.
21:01:34 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: Skype is giving us fits tonight-audio in and out! We'll do our best!
21:02:43 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: skype is really really choppy tonight

21:20:07 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: Hi Kim
21:20:09 Judi Wolf -> -EdTechTalk: Are there more than the free ones? Subscription or pay for them individually?
21:20:27 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: Yes there is a subscription based on # of students beyond the free ones
21:20:34 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: Judi -- he is answering your question in 20 seconds   :)
21:21:02 Judi Wolf -> -EdTechTalk: OK - These look wonderful, as long as they are affordable.
21:21:44 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: 25 cents a student--very reasonable!!
21:21:56 Judi Wolf -> -EdTechTalk: Thanks - sounds very reasonable.
21:22:12 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: wonder if we can use stimulus funds to purchase a subscription??
21:22:38 James Sigler -> -EdTechTalk: Openoffice!  Good for you!
21:23:18 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: is the price based on an annual subscription or a one time purchase?
21:23:37 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: wow! 1000 model lessons over 3 years!

21:25:16 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: very interesting model!
21:25:39 Judi Wolf -> -EdTechTalk: A little flack from the Union? You better give Arnie Duncan some lessons!
21:26:02 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: so glad to hear him talk about the importance of the principal being on board with technology!! I definitely agree!
21:26:08 mrsdurff -> -EdTechTalk: that's a volatile isssue
21:26:19 James Sigler -> -EdTechTalk: Do COWs have projectors on-board?
21:26:32 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: leadership is so important!
21:27:14 Lorna -> -EdTechTalk: I love the tutor in the corner
21:27:17 mrsdurff -> -EdTechTalk: i would gladly be replaced
21:27:33 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: I remember when they decided to replace the foreign language teachers with TV shows--years ago in my district
21:27:34 James Sigler -> -EdTechTalk: @Peggy I agree.  School-wide technology integration does not happen without principal support
21:27:38 mrsdurff -> -EdTechTalk: my goal every year is to be unnecessary to the learners
21:28:35 James Sigler -> -EdTechTalk: @mrsdurff wouldn't it be great to work yourself out of a job?  ;)
21:28:40 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: Jeremey is currently teaching an administrator course on leadership-I hope he'll talk about it. It's an admin credential technology module
21:28:48 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: my goal is to be necessary -- but not a necessity
21:29:07 mrsdurff -> -EdTechTalk: that is my goal every year James
21:29:25 mrsdurff -> -EdTechTalk: unfortunately, it only lasts a year
21:29:33 mrsdurff -> -EdTechTalk: hey linda
21:29:43 LindaN -> -EdTechTalk: Hi Durff!
21:30:51 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: the projector is essential!
21:30:58 mrsdurff -> -EdTechTalk: time to switch to the other 'puter
21:32:02 James Sigler -> -EdTechTalk: Does IT support Linux?  Or are you the IT dept?
21:32:04 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: it's amazing what kids can do with computers (even Kdgs) if we just let them
21:32:11 LindaN -> -EdTechTalk: My first graders are pros at using laptops from the carts- it's amazing what they can do!
21:32:37 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: You are an awesome example LindaN!
21:33:03 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: Jeremy really has a lot of hats to wear!!
21:33:15 LindaN -> -EdTechTalk: What's the distance that the laptops can move away from the cart and still pick up the wireless? We have a pretty short range.
21:33:42 James Sigler -> -EdTechTalk: My 3rd graders loved it when I brought in microphones for them to record themselves in Scratch.
21:33:48 JeremyDavis -> -EdTechTalk: 30"
21:33:54 JeremyDavis -> -EdTechTalk: 30 feet
21:34:02 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: Jeremy, do you have students mentoring teachers with technology in your district?
21:34:35 LindaN -> -EdTechTalk: That's what I want to happen in my district Peggy- I'm pushing for it.
21:34:57 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: I love the model used by Generation YES!! It's so effective!
21:35:16 LindaN -> -EdTechTalk: I agree peggyG
21:35:47 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: I'd love to hear more about the virtual field trips!
21:36:55 LindaN -> -EdTechTalk: How did you get the principals on board?
21:37:15 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: how incredible to see what you can do when you get the Supt and principals on board with that one common focus on the curriculum!
21:38:00 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: open lab is a great idea for teacher support with tech
21:38:49 LindaN -> -EdTechTalk: You are building capacity for change!
21:39:38 James Sigler -> -EdTechTalk: Has the student acess to technology changed how teachers teach?  More student-center?
21:40:48 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: Jeremy can you share the advice you give the administrators in your training based on the Courage to Teach book?
21:41:14 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: that's a great suggestion about Donors Choose
21:41:42 James Sigler -> -EdTechTalk: Would someone drop in the link to his site again?
21:41:57 adinasullivan -> -EdTechTalk: That's what I do.  It's worth some time after school - even 30-45 min
21:42:03 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: http://virtualtechnologyteacher.com/
21:42:15 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: he is answering your question right now James  -- 20 seconds
21:43:07 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: that is such an excellent book! the first chapter is called The Heart of a Teacher!
21:43:46 LindaN -> -EdTechTalk: Have you done any assessment and gathered any data about use and change in teaching and learning?
21:43:49 Judi Wolf -> -EdTechTalk: What is the name of the book again?
21:43:49 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: http://k6techpresos.wikispaces.com/ This is the wiki he's referring to--he's teaching the technology module for admins
21:44:00 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: Courage to Teach by Parker Palmer
21:44:07 Judi Wolf -> -EdTechTalk: Thanks
21:44:41 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: it's so frustrating when the lab has to be taken over by district-wide programs!
21:45:30 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: Just asked your ?? LindaN
21:45:59 Judi Wolf -> -EdTechTalk: Thanks for a great show - Gotta run, Jen. Loved being here live. Thanks for all you WOW do!
21:46:06 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: Thanks Judi
21:46:11 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: Thanks for joining us Judi!
21:47:33 James Sigler -> -EdTechTalk: @Peggy what kind of district-wide programs?
21:47:33 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: the big data/assessment question!! how do we document student achievement and connect it to gains through the use of technology?
21:47:33 LindaN -> -EdTechTalk: Thanks! :)
21:48:10 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: the ones he's talking about that require students to spend 45 min 2x a week on learning math
21:48:17 JeremyDavis -> -EdTechTalk: Another great book, Teaching as a Subversive Activity - Postman
21:48:26 mrsdurff -> -EdTechTalk: that is success- i get the zero
21:48:53 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: boy does that take me back!! Postman!! :-) popular in the 70's and 80's :-) and still relevant!
21:49:34 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: that's great evidence that the PD is working when teachers voluntarily come to learn :-)
21:49:54 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: http://www.glogster.com/edu/
21:50:21 James Sigler -> -EdTechTalk: @Peggy Yes, we do need more data on technology improving student acheivement
21:50:24 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: Glogster is such an amazing site!
21:50:38 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: http://delicious.com/WOW2.0/wow2_20090414
21:50:43 mrsdurff -> -EdTechTalk: i never used it
21:51:11 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: great advice! Voicethread may work on a wiki but if it's blocked I think it still comes up blank on the wiki
21:51:43 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: I use Glogster to create posters. Just used it to create a ticket for a special event at our upcoming AzTEA conference
21:52:41 LindaN -> -EdTechTalk: My district does not seem to be aware that they are required to inform students aobut safety if they use erate.
21:52:55 James Sigler -> -EdTechTalk: Most teachers want them blocked because they consider it a distraction, not a danger
21:52:58 adinasullivan -> -EdTechTalk: @James Sigler Here is a research article that just came out http://www.thejournal.com/articles/24218
21:53:19 LindaN -> -EdTechTalk: @James- our MS and HS teachers also have some of that perspective
21:53:38 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: Thanks for that link James! I just read that article today. Excellent!
21:53:47 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: http://www.pikiwiki.com/ews/index.jsp
21:54:24 LindaN -> -EdTechTalk: It is important to make sure that we clearly communicate the VALUE added.
21:54:43 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: many schools embed these tools and resources into Moodle environments
21:54:52 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: so true LindaN!
21:55:35 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: teachers also need to be trained to use videos effectively with their students--not just sit them in front of the screen :-)
21:55:36 mrsdurff -> -EdTechTalk: vouchers?
21:55:39 James Sigler -> -EdTechTalk: @Linda filtering has a place, but MS and HS often dont' want to monitor what their kids are doing on the computer.
21:56:40 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: I think filtering has a tendency to provide a false security and it's so important to teach the kids what to do on the internet
21:57:11 mrsdurff -> -EdTechTalk: it's easier
21:57:13 LindaN -> -EdTechTalk: @James- yes I would agree. MY district is working toward unfiltering and moving the responsibility. Locking down passes off the responsibility to the filter.
21:57:30 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: that is fantastic LindaN!
21:58:00 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: Call Orange County Department of Education
21:58:18 mrsdurff -> -EdTechTalk: flood 'em!
21:58:22 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: http://www.ocde.us/
21:58:35 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: I'm definitely interested in looking into that!
21:58:51 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: http://globaleducation.ning.com/profile/jeromeburg
21:59:08 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: http://www.googlelittrips.org/
21:59:08 James Sigler -> -EdTechTalk: Students can still find ways around filter.  False security.  Responsibility addresses this much better.
21:59:31 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: http://twitter.com/teachtech  Jeremy on Twitter :-)
21:59:34 JenW -> -EdTechTalk: http://www.nationalgeographic.com/pyramids/
21:59:43 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: the Google Lit Trips are incredible!!
22:00:37 James Sigler -> -EdTechTalk: My family and I will visit the Great Wall this summer!  Excited!
22:01:05 adinasullivan -> -EdTechTalk: @James Enjoy!  It's a pretty cool experience
22:01:10 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: This is another great site for math/science based on Google Lit Trips created by Thomas Cooper  http://expeditionlittrips.wikispaces.com/
22:02:00 LindaN -> -EdTechTalk: GCT and Google Teacher Academy is AMAZING_ be sure to apply when the next one comes around!
22:02:18 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: I saw Jerome on a recent ISTE webinar and he was fantastic!
22:02:41 PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: This has been such a great conversation!! Thank you so much Jeremy!!
