2008-11-03 21:28:13 [Message] Penny -> -EdTechTalk: That's what I like about the expect respect program -- teaches what to do instead of focusing on the bad behaviour
2008-11-03 21:28:15 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: it seems so often the perception of parents/kids concerned about bullying is that they reported it to the teacher/principal and nothing happened--nothing changed. Does the use of this curriculum change that?
2008-11-03 21:28:24 [Message] susan cutajar -> -EdTechTalk: Hey Matt, Miss you so much, and I am glad to be back online tonight. I ran into Cindy tonight as we were dropping off all four of our kids at the hockey rink and this topic will be a good one

2008-11-03 21:31:09 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: are you collecting any data via student/parent surveys to capture change in attitudes or incidences of bullying since you started the program? What are you finding?
2008-11-03 21:31:35 [Message] mrsdurff -> -EdTechTalk: excellent qts
2008-11-03 21:32:43 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: do the bullying situations get handled/facilitated by teacher, principal, counselor? How does this work?
2008-11-03 21:34:07 [Message] sroseman -> -EdTechTalk: Can Schools really regulate cyberbullying, harassment, and social networking?

2008-11-03 21:37:26 [Message] jeannine -> -EdTechTalk: Looks like a great pro-active approach for young people...are there similar online programs for older groups...those already big users of social media?

2008-11-03 21:38:51 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: @jeannine...I would submit that adults need education as well...they often times are not the best models!!
2008-11-03 21:40:11 [Message] jeannine -> -EdTechTalk: very true matt...I think society has become so "in your face"...difficult to change adult behaviour
2008-11-03 21:40:12 [Message] kevinh -> -EdTechTalk: There was no internet when we were kids
2008-11-03 21:40:19 [Message] Steve Taffee -> -EdTechTalk: It seems to me that the definition of bullying is much like that of sexual harrasment, insofar as it relies a lot on the perspective of the victim. And if this is true, getting students to take the perspective of another can be caught up in developmental issues.
2008-11-03 21:40:25 [Message] cindyseibel -> -EdTechTalk: we walk in our house with a philosophy of truth and honesty
2008-11-03 21:40:26 [Message] kevinh -> -EdTechTalk: learning beside kids
2008-11-03 21:40:58 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: there are some great examples and guidance for appropriate use of cell phones in Liz Kolb's new book "Toys to Tools" that would be very helpful to integrate into anti-bullying programs.
2008-11-03 21:41:46 [Message] Lorna -> -EdTechTalk: hello connie
2008-11-03 21:42:02 [Message] cindyseibel -> -EdTechTalk: @steve Should we create a clearer defnition of bullying that is not so dependent on the perspective of the victim?
2008-11-03 21:42:32 [Message] cindyseibel -> -EdTechTalk: Could we define bullying in the context of power and control? Jon?
2008-11-03 21:43:39 [Message] jeannine -> -EdTechTalk: Don't forget November 21 - Stand up to Bullying Day...
2008-11-03 21:43:46 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: adults don't know appropriate ettiquette on cell phones so it's not surprising that kids don't either
2008-11-03 21:44:15 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: @peggy...EXCELLENT point!
2008-11-03 21:44:16 [Message] czautcke -> -EdTechTalk: Peggy--you are absolutely right! That's why I struggle with the cell phone.
2008-11-03 21:44:40 [Message] connie -> -EdTechTalk: Hello Lorna
2008-11-03 21:45:05 [Message] Lorna -> -EdTechTalk: tell us where you are from
2008-11-03 21:45:15 [Message] sroseman -> -EdTechTalk: yes, encourage students to speak up without fear of recrimination if they know of someone who is the victim of cyberbullying.
2008-11-03 21:45:38 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: so often they feel "anonymous" online and think they're really only talking to their friends, but they need to be taught it's public and can be viewed/heard by anyone
2008-11-03 21:45:58 [Message] kevinh -> -EdTechTalk: communicate that it is NEVER their fault that they are bullied
2008-11-03 21:47:23 [Message] connie -> -EdTechTalk: I am from Ridgeway, Ontario and sit on the Special Education Advisory Committee of the Niagara Catholic District School Board.

2008-11-03 21:48:26 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: I've seen many teachers that treat teasing/bullying reporting as tattling-how does the curriculum address that?
2008-11-03 21:48:31 [Message] mrsdurff -> -EdTechTalk: this adult is fading fast - night ye all
2008-11-03 21:48:46 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: @durff...g'nite!!!

2008-11-03 21:49:31 [Message] jeannine -> -EdTechTalk: That mentoring you speak of Matt takes time...it's important as parents that we learn the terms...Lorna's making the point I was going to make!!!
2008-11-03 21:49:32 [Message] kevinh -> -EdTechTalk: Some parents treat the computer like their child's private diary.
2008-11-03 21:49:38 [Message] penny -> -EdTechTalk: the easiest answer is always no
2008-11-03 21:49:54 [Message] penny -> -EdTechTalk: so who's job is it to teach the parents?
2008-11-03 21:50:07 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: Yes Kevinh! They don't want their kids to think they don't trust them when they want to monitor
2008-11-03 21:50:13 [Message] penny -> -EdTechTalk: do any of these anti-bullying programs include a parent component?
2008-11-03 21:50:18 [Message] sroseman -> -EdTechTalk: Schools need to be given guidance urging them to take firm action against pupils who use mobile phones and the internet to bully other children and teachers.
2008-11-03 21:50:52 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: @jeannine...agreed...just to be to fair, I'm really referring to all aadults as role models...I just don't think we do a good job of it in general
2008-11-03 21:50:54 [Message] mary jo -> -EdTechTalk: perhaps in school parent training nites with guest speakers and hands on teaching
2008-11-03 21:51:11 [Message] penny -> -EdTechTalk: my friend was just here signing up her 70 yo mother-in-law on facebook so it is coming ....

I love these videos. I did the first one in it's entirety and would like to see this piloted in a classroom.

The second one is good too, however, I find it a bit "wordy" for me late at night when I do my homework. Possibly would be too wordy for a lot of kids too.....
