21:01Paul Allison: Anybody want to join us?
21:01Andy Schoenborn: My name here?
21:01Andy Schoenborn: Good.
21:02Paul Allison: Hey Denee PLease join us in the hangout if you can... we'd love to talk with you.
21:02Peggy George: Just left the interview with Steve Hargadon with Kirsten Olson, author of "Wounded by School". Incredible conversation!
21:02Denee Tyler: So, I'm not sure how these chat's work, but I've already got a question about the youthvoices site after using it yesterday with my students.
21:02chadsansing: Howdy, All -
21:02Paul Allison: Join us in the Hangout!
21:03Peggy George: Denee-we'll all be able to listen and watch the stream but if you want to participate in the conversation you need to join the Google Hangout (see link on left)
21:03chadsansing: Peggy: Yes; that was awesome.
21:03Paul Allison: We are going to wait just a minute...
21:04Peggy George: that chat dialogue was also intriguing and thought provoking so I'm looking forward to hearing it again :-)
21:04Paul Allison: We're waiting for Denee or Jennifer Woolven to come
21:06Paul Allison: We are live.
21:06Denee Tyler: I think I'm coming, but the page is very slow to load..
21:07Denee Tyler: Actually, maybe it's not working. I just see google and a camera.
21:10Peggy George: you may need to reload/refresh your page @Denee. I had to do that.
21:10Peggy George: Seeing the stream now with audio :-)
21:14Valerie Burton @MsBisOnline: hello all
21:14Andy Schoenborn: Hi Valerie.
21:14Peggy George: Hi Valerie :-)
21:15Valerie Burton @MsBisOnline: Hey Andy. Welcome. Thanks for joining us
21:15Valerie Burton @MsBisOnline: hey Peggy
21:15Jake Thomas: Hello Valerie
21:15Peggy George: Chris Sloan is doing an awesome job of reaching out and sharing Youth Voices :-)
21:15Valerie Burton @MsBisOnline: Jey Jake
21:15Valerie Burton @MsBisOnline: @Peggy, Chris is awesome
21:15Peggy George: absolutely!
21:16Peggy George: I love these TTT conversations each week!
21:17Andy Schoenborn: Valerie, do your students use Google docs?
21:18Valerie Burton @MsBisOnline: Some of them do. But most of them have yahoo accounts. I am thinking about asking them to convert
21:18Peggy George: @Valerie--your secret is safe with us! Good luck! :-)
21:18Valerie Burton @MsBisOnline: Thanks Peggy
21:20Valerie Burton @MsBisOnline: @Andy, are all of your kids googlized????
21:20Andy Schoenborn: @Valerie - I am interested in setting up peer editing groups using Google docs for improving writing on AP Lit essays.
21:20Valerie Burton @MsBisOnline: OK. Let me try to work something out and have the kids make accounts
21:20Andy Schoenborn: @Valerie - Yes, but I'm looking for more. :-)
21:20Jake Thomas: @Andy - I've had really good luck with Google Docs peer review.
21:21Valerie Burton @MsBisOnline: @Jake, how many reviews do your kids receive? Do you assign 2 readers for each essay ... or what?
21:22Andy Schoenborn: @Jake - I have too, and I would like to see students look at what others are doing beyond peers in their classroom.
21:23Jake Thomas: This last time I set them up in groups of 3 or 4. I had them sit far away from one another so they were required to write responses rather than talk.
21:23Jake Thomas: I gave them an opportunity to chat after, but their comments were very good.
21:24Peggy George: that would be really interesting! I would love to watch the students interact!
21:25Valerie Burton @MsBisOnline: OMG, Peggy can you see all of our heads trying to churn out ideas
21:25Peggy George: exactly! :-)
21:25Andy Schoenborn: @Jake - I have experienced the same thing. What would it look like if this happened cross state?
21:26Jake Thomas: @Andy - That would be amazing.
21:27Valerie Burton @MsBisOnline: @Andy and @Jake, it seems that we are going to have to hook something up so that our kids can help one another.
21:27Valerie Burton @MsBisOnline: We can then publish their "final" pieces on Youth Voices
21:27Jake Thomas: @Valerie & @Andy - Agreed! That would be awesome.
21:27Andy Schoenborn: @Jake @Valerie - We will have to continue this conversation, and find a way to make it work.
21:28Andy Schoenborn: @Valerie - Publishing on YouthVoices, and maybe a piece on Digital Is that shares our experience.
21:28Valerie Burton @MsBisOnline: @Andy, sounds great.
21:29Peggy George: Voicethreads are great for sharing those kinds of videos where different languages could be used to communicate with each other
21:29Peggy George: you can do Voicethread with just one computer in the classroom
21:29Peggy George: Voicethread can be asynchronous which helps to address the time zone differences
21:30Valerie Burton @MsBisOnline: @Peggy, I think that Paul is thinking that it might be easier to just create and publish videos with out have to go through voicethread
21:31Andy Schoenborn: Anyone have students use blogs to synthesize ideas from Lit. and other texts?
21:31Peggy George: and post them on yourhvoices for more conversation?
21:32Valerie Burton @MsBisOnline: Probably @Peggy
21:32Valerie Burton @MsBisOnline: Also uploading them to YouthVoices allows them to have even more responses
21:33Valerie Burton @MsBisOnline: My kids have just created their own ePortfolios on weebly.com. They have just created blogs there
21:33Peggy George: that's great Valerie!
21:33Andy Schoenborn: @Valerie I am using the same blogs. I wonder if we could have students respond to each other?
21:33Peggy George: Weebly is such an easy site to use :-)
21:37Peggy George: I love the guides :-) Great alternatives!
21:39Peggy George: the structures and strategies can begin to blend once they become familiar with them and begin to internalize them
21:39Peggy George: http://youthvoices.net/play
21:40Peggy George: http://youthvoices.net/grid
21:53Peggy George: love those points about the anonymous editing
21:53Valerie Burton @MsBisOnline: It makes a HUGE difference. I am sooo tired of reading "good job Bob"
21:54Peggy George: I know what you mean!
21:55Jake Thomas: Ha, me too
21:57Peggy George: really interesting concept of multiple publishing options--doesn't have to be perfect before you publish
21:59Peggy George: they are incorporating some peer editing in the Flat Classroom projects
22:01Peggy George: they will all struggle with the language that isn't their first language and that's a great equalizing experience for them
22:02Peggy George: I love the idea of the Spanish-English sharing!
22:02Valerie Burton @MsBisOnline: So do I
22:04Peggy George: that's a great suggestion! just get on the site and start experimenting with options
22:05Peggy George: captcha can be so frustrating!!!
22:06Peggy George: could the ipad version make a difference?
22:07Peggy George: this hour just flew by!
22:07Peggy George: whew Valerie!!! Paul just saved you a bunch of work :-)
22:07Valerie Burton @MsBisOnline: I know @Peggy.
22:08Peggy George: many of those topics are universal to teens :-)
22:08Valerie Burton @MsBisOnline: That has been one of the things that stopped me from updating
22:09Peggy George: love the enthusiasm of this group!!! amazing teachers!
22:09Valerie Burton @MsBisOnline: Ahhh shucks
22:09Valerie Burton @MsBisOnline: That's one of the reasons that I hang out with all of you guys
22:10Valerie Burton @MsBisOnline: My daughter knows that Wednesday night is webinar/hangout night
22:10Peggy George: this is such a great example of collaboration!
22:10Peggy George: your daughter is well trained :-)
22:10Peggy George: great quote! "go home and try this"--opposite of stuntman
22:11Peggy George: great suggestion about trying the mobile site for youthvoices!
22:12Peggy George: love it!! go Denee!
22:14Valerie Burton @MsBisOnline: Is there another link for the grid? I want a PDF version
22:14Peggy George: thank you all!!! great conversation!
22:14Andy Schoenborn: Great conversation, thank you.
22:14Valerie Burton @MsBisOnline: Thanks
22:14Valerie Burton @MsBisOnline: Night
22:15Peggy George: good night
22:15Jake Thomas: Thanks everyone!
22:15Valerie Burton @MsBisOnline: My daughter Morrah says Hi and Goodnight
22:15Peggy George: Hi Morrah :-)
22:15Valerie Burton @MsBisOnline: Thanks Peggy. She says Hi back
22:15Peggy George: :-)
22:15Valerie Burton @MsBisOnline: Night.
