21:15:13 SusanEttenheim: welcom Cynthia ! What part of Alaska is that?

21:15:18 PeggyG: monika are you going to join the hangout so you can tell everyone about the Reform Symposium?

21:16:53 ShannonSullivan: on which one?

21:16:53 PeggyG: those ads are so random and annoying! are they every 10 minutes?

21:17:13 SusanEttenheim: they are annoying but at least they don't last long!

21:17:25 PeggyG: right-20 seconds I think

21:17:39 SusanEttenheim: yeahhh shantanu!

21:17:43 SusanEttenheim: you did it!

21:17:47 PeggyG: the more a person talks the more we get to see their talking heaD :-)

21:17:56 SusanEttenheim: haha peggy

21:18:10 PeggyG: :-) is that an incentive or dis-incentive???

21:18:15 SusanEttenheim: shantanu turn the ustream off

21:20:13 SusanEttenheim: when did you live there because my school is relatively new

21:20:25 Danielle Beach: Throggs Neck, just like the bridge.  I teach on Long Island and initially moved there, and now I live in Westchester

21:20:29 SusanEttenheim: Danielle which class are you taking?

21:20:31 Danielle Beach: I lived there until 2007

21:20:34 SusanEttenheim: ahh

21:20:48 SusanEttenheim: I went to Mt Vernon High School :)

21:20:59 PeggyG: I sure wish we could float the chat! can't get that feature on my Mac any more.

21:21:05 SusanEttenheim: but started first grade at Greenacres in Scarsdale

21:21:16 Danielle Beach: EDIM 514: Internet Tools for Teaching through Wilkes-Barre University

21:21:36 PeggyG: exactly!!

21:21:52 PeggyG: Jeff are you thinking of changing the chat moduLE?

21:21:53 SusanEttenheim: ahh we do get Wilkes-Barre students coming all the time

21:22:04 Danielle Beach: Greenacres school isn't far from where I live now, I'm in Hartsdale.  A friend of mine teaches in Mount Vernon High School

21:22:20 SusanEttenheim: Hahah yes! very close

21:22:27 Danielle Beach: Small world

21:22:40 SusanEttenheim: Peggy I wonder what would happen if we all moved over to the ustream chat?

21:22:53 SusanEttenheim: where did you go to high school Danielle?

21:23:01 Danielle Beach: Preston High School in the Bronx

21:23:05 SusanEttenheim: ahh

21:23:15 cshidner: I don't know if I can move over to the ustream chat

21:23:25 SusanEttenheim: Fred are you still teaching at VHS?

21:23:39 SusanEttenheim: I'm not saying we should... just wondering

21:23:45 SusanEttenheim: what do you think Peggy?

21:23:57 SusanEttenheim: what do you think jl?

21:24:19 Danielle Beach: Is anyone else getting an ad for Memphis the Musical?

21:24:40 SusanEttenheim: Danielle that happens don't worry the stream will be back in a few seconds

21:24:41 cshidner: Frustrating...the ustream starts and stops for me

21:24:54 SusanEttenheim: is it buffering?

21:25:33 fred haas: @Susan - Yes, still with VHS or whatever it will be called, although I believe my course is getting a reboot. I haven't gotten to see it yet.

21:25:50 SusanEttenheim: ahh what is your course?

21:25:51 cshidner: It just drops in and out...it will be easy to join these talks when I'm back in Valdez

21:26:02 fred haas: Screenwriting Fundamentals

21:26:07 SusanEttenheim: Ah that's good that you'll have another option

21:26:15 SusanEttenheim: ah - who is rewriting it?

21:26:29 SusanEttenheim: we have a screenwriting elective at our school

21:26:42 SusanEttenheim: so Danielle have you seen youth voices?

21:26:49 Danielle Beach: No I have not

21:26:55 SusanEttenheim: What about everyone else? Do you know what is being discussed?

21:26:56 fred haas: Well, we'll see. Really what they seem to be doing is picking one of the versions and running with that for allsections. I am not sure how it is all going to work yet.

21:26:58 SusanEttenheim: youthvoices.net

21:27:17 Danielle Beach: I'm interested in checking it out

21:27:23 SusanEttenheim: ah fred - yes I guess it's good that my class is only me and only one section

21:27:30 alicebarr: HAve you all seen the book Teaching the iGeneration? Some great rubrics for writing on the computer

21:27:46 SusanEttenheim: who else in the chat has worked in youthvoices.net

21:27:52 SusanEttenheim: thank you alice

21:27:54 alicebarr: WE are using it with teachers... Bill Ferriter

21:27:57 SusanEttenheim: ugh I have another ad

21:28:05 SusanEttenheim: did Bill write it?

21:28:07 fred haas: I have, thinking about trying to get involved again.

21:28:27 PeggyG: I see that premium members never see ads. Does that mean the channel needs to be premium or if I have a personal premium account on ustream I never see ads?

21:28:28 SusanEttenheim: hi Christina welcome!

21:28:35 Christina: Thanks Susan!

21:28:40 SusanEttenheim: I wonder Peggy - good question

21:28:50 alicebarr: Oh I have worked in youthvoices.net Our students shared some arteork

21:28:55 SusanEttenheim: Christina have you been here before?

21:28:56 PeggyG: I'll be back in 30 seconds--ad...

21:29:13 Cindy: Susan, I was wondering...I created an account yesterday, and signed in today for this live talk.  I'm in, can see, hear, and do forth.  How does one become part of the 'EdTalk'?

21:29:24 JL: unbroken Ustream for me. Just started simulcasting on Icecast - might work better for lower bandwidth connections

21:29:25 SusanEttenheim: Alice do you think your school might be in again this year? That would be great!

21:29:44 Christina: yes, Susan ... but thanks for checking.

21:29:46 PeggyG: Matt do the ads appear in the ustream recording?

21:29:51 Christina: ustream is cool :)

21:30:08 SusanEttenheim: ah Christina can you try that - did you see what jl just posted?

21:30:25 SusanEttenheim: ustream is working for me too tonight

21:30:34 cshidner: thanks...icecast works much better than ustream.

21:30:35 SusanEttenheim: but in the connection in Alaska...

21:30:44 SusanEttenheim: great! Thanks jl!

21:30:56 alicebarr: I was thinking I will work with the Creative Writing teacher this year. Maybe. I actually haven't talked to anyone all summer, but it's such a great way for students to connect I hope we can do it again.

21:30:59 SusanEttenheim: jl and peggy what should we do about the chat?

21:31:15 SusanEttenheim: Alice is there photography class there?

21:31:16 PeggyG: only JL can do something about it :-)

21:31:26 cshidner: my usual connection in valdez alaska will be fine...it's just that I am in a remote location in McCarthy for another few weeks

21:32:13 alicebarr: Yes we have Photo 1, 2 and 3 - Melissa

21:32:14 SusanEttenheim: welcome back fred

21:32:25 fred haas: Thanks had a little glitch there.

21:32:32 alicebarr: http://quadblogging.net

21:32:37 SusanEttenheim: right Melissa was in before wasn't she?

21:32:41 alicebarr: yes

21:33:13 SusanEttenheim: I'd love to email her and connect

21:33:14 alicebarr: But she is now working with a class in China, so I will have to see. But maybe her colleague

21:33:27 cshidner: thanks for the quad blogging idea

21:33:32 SusanEttenheim: ohhh could we get the Chinese students to post in YV too?

21:33:45 alicebarr: Maybe! Also we have Japan with Sarah

21:33:50 SusanEttenheim: hi tengrrl welcome!you've joined us before haven't you?

21:34:03 SusanEttenheim: yes would LOVE to connect with Sarah

21:34:14 Danielle Beach: Has anyone used blogging extensively in a high school class?

21:34:19 SusanEttenheim: I have a lot of both Chinese and Japanese students so I'd really like to connect

21:34:22 tengrrl: I had to remember my password, so I must have been here before :)

21:34:29 SusanEttenheim: I do Danielle

21:34:37 SusanEttenheim: and I think many here do

21:34:51 alicebarr: @Danielle we have an art teacher that uses blogging for reflection

21:34:58 SusanEttenheim: sorry I forgot where and what you teach tengrrl?

21:35:40 Danielle Beach: How do you implement/incorporate it?  I attempted it this year but it was met with a lot of resistance on the part of my students and administration.  Any tips?

21:35:41 tengrrl: I write lesson plans and other educational materials for ReadWriteThink. It's a K12 site for English Language Arts teachers.

21:35:59 SusanEttenheim: ah welcome tengrrl!

21:36:03 ShannonSullivan: Hey! I love readwritethink

21:36:10 SusanEttenheim: fun to see the site - thanks Matt!

21:36:10 ShannonSullivan: I used to produce Xpeditions

21:36:13 fred haas: I have to say the UStream commercials that crop up are really annoying.

21:36:24 SusanEttenheim: they sure are fred!

21:36:28 Jenna Raygor: I agree!

21:36:38 SusanEttenheim: and you'd think you wouldn't miss much in 20 secs but you do!

21:37:07 ShannonSullivan: tengrrl, I use www.readwritethink for students with disabilities ALL the time.

21:37:18 ShannonSullivan: Amazing tools.

21:37:29 tengrrl: I always find wonderful stuff on Xpeditions. Great things to support students there.

21:38:17 ShannonSullivan: thanks! I am writing a lot for PBS now. Fun.

21:38:25 Cindy: Is that Epals?

21:39:11 SusanEttenheim: Alice could you ask them if it's Epals?

21:39:17 Cindy: www.epals.com

21:40:01 SusanEttenheim: thanks alice!

21:40:09 monika: some other good sites: generationon.org

21:40:13 alicebarr: :)

21:40:30 Valerie Burton: I forgot all about you all. Sorry for the feedback. I was trying to change computers.

21:42:13 SusanEttenheim: of the people here in the chat - are your classes working with students in other countries?

21:42:38 monika: i think they'd rather be in a chat like hangout

21:42:57 SusanEttenheim: than what monika?

21:43:04 SusanEttenheim: ugh I have one those adsa

21:43:06 SusanEttenheim: ads

21:43:17 monika: for a jump start... instead of writing only

21:43:17 SusanEttenheim: 20 seconds has never seemed so long!

21:43:22 SusanEttenheim: hi chris

21:43:30 Chris Sloan: howdy

21:43:31 Danielle Beach: No, I would definitely be interested in doing so but have no idea where to start to look.  I am making a list of the websites mentioned in this chat to investigate further

21:43:40 SusanEttenheim: that looks great Alice!

21:43:52 SusanEttenheim: did Bill write it?

21:43:56 SusanEttenheim: Bill is great!

21:44:21 PeggyG: the reform Symposium Conference (free/online starts in 2 days) and would be an awesome way for people to connect with other educators globally. http://reformsymposium.com

21:44:25 Chris Sloan: Yes Bill Ferriter wrote it

21:44:25 cshidner: Hello Chris! I'm listening in but I won't be able to join the conversation until late August

21:44:52 SusanEttenheim: great!

21:44:57 Chris Sloan: No problem Cynthia, glad you're here

21:45:06 Danielle Beach: Free and online sound right up my alley! I'll definitely check it out

21:45:12 Danielle Beach: Thanks.

21:45:46 alicebarr: I really like the way Bill writes his materials

21:46:06 SusanEttenheim: Bill does great work! We should invite him to have a conversation with us!

21:46:30 monika: duty

21:46:41 SusanEttenheim: sounds like this class assignment may be worthwhile for you danielle :)

21:46:43 alicebarr: I am sure he would love to.

21:46:44 ShannonSullivan: Is the expectation when students respond that they will also mention it? Should they say, "You have a good point, but what I was going for is..."

21:46:59 SusanEttenheim: He has joined us before but a long time ago :)

21:47:05 alicebarr: Cnn Student News might be a place to start.

21:47:08 fred haas: This whole idea of responding is always a serious challenge, even in online courses. I have found that it really takes a lot of time to nurture a culture of meaningful exchange amongst students that does not necessarily come naturally.

21:47:15 PeggyG: Bill is going to be an upcoming guest on Steve hargadon's interview with authors-had to reschedule it. http://futureofeducation.com

21:47:24 SusanEttenheim: or the learning network on the nytimes!

21:47:26 Danielle Beach: Cnnstudentnews is a wonderful resource, I use it a lot in my classes

21:47:38 SusanEttenheim: it sure does fred!

21:47:47 SusanEttenheim: even in an online class right?

21:47:49 Chris Sloan: @shannon, a lot of my students directly quote from the post they're commenting on

21:48:21 Cindy: A good rubric can communicate to the students what is expected.

21:48:36 Chris Sloan: that's what some of the commenting guides do

21:48:40 ShannonSullivan: and @Chris, do they add to it? I wonder if teachers supply "starter scripts" for students, like

21:49:00 SusanEttenheim: yes Shannon we have about 50 of them already on the site

21:49:02 Cindy: perfect

21:49:08 ShannonSullivan: "I wonder if you thought about" or "This reminds me of..."

21:49:12 SusanEttenheim: or were on the site but need to just be put back

21:49:13 ShannonSullivan: I have to check those out!

21:49:14 ShannonSullivan: THANKS!

21:49:24 Chris Sloan: Paul's a master at thoughtful comment "scripts"

21:49:29 SusanEttenheim: the Spanish teacher at my school even translated many of them

21:49:37 ShannonSullivan: That is awesome!

21:49:46 ShannonSullivan: es muy bueno

21:50:02 SusanEttenheim: Shannon we kept adding to them as the need came up so we added responding to images etc...

21:50:03 Chris Sloan: one of my students starting communicating in Spanish because he was relaly trying to be bilingual

21:50:32 SusanEttenheim: and we were hoping to have Spanish classes using it... but never quite got off the ground

21:50:39 ShannonSullivan: @Chris, how old is this kid?

21:51:02 alicebarr: http://go.solution-tree.com/technology/reproducibles_TTiG.html Bill's reproducibles from the book

21:51:04 SusanEttenheim: ahh Shannon... high schoolers!

21:51:35 SusanEttenheim: thanks alice!

21:52:02 Danielle Beach: Ugh is right, I have had a few students with that atitude

21:53:13 fred haas: That is a pretty awesome project!

21:53:29 SusanEttenheim: that is great!

21:53:48 ShannonSullivan: It sounds like a great way for the kids to feel valued for their voice(s).

21:55:39 Danielle Beach: Valeria makes an excellent point.  I have many students who look at an assignment and judge it before determining how much effort to put into it.  They seem to have a good filter for busy work; they would like to complete assignments that are valued and meaningful towards their education

21:56:31 Cindy: Absolutely

21:57:45 Cindy: I, too, want my efforts to be purposeful

21:57:47 monika: Gregory Hill just posted this.. about voice: http://t.co/5d55m4A

21:58:36 SusanEttenheim: thank you monika

21:59:04 PeggyG: I purchased Bill Ferriter's book and it is fantastic. He has actually posted a LOT of the content online as PDFs.

21:59:05 Valerie Burton: There are links in the Google + chat that I will stick in here. I keep forgetting about you guys

21:59:06 monika: or is it just listening more?.. they are expecting guidelines.. but is that a good thing? do we need to give them space until they believe we want to hear their soul speaking?

21:59:17 fred haas: @Chris - You almost have to cultivate the network first, otherwisde who will respond?

21:59:28 SusanEttenheim: ah thank you valerie

21:59:53 fred haas: It seems like you need to accrue some followers

22:00:08 SusanEttenheim: fred one of my students woke me up last year when he said that we need to start at home

22:00:30 SusanEttenheim: learning how to respond and connect so I've been working a lot on that

22:01:05 alicebarr: http://www.amazon.com/Socially-Networked-Classroom-Teaching-Media/dp/141...

22:01:17 fred haas: @Susan - That's great. In many cases students don't respond much to one another when they are across the room. I wonder about how much that changes just because of the digital environment?

22:01:32 Valerie Burton: Whoops. Can't copy and past

22:01:36 Valerie Burton: paste

22:01:47 tengrrl: A lot is going to depend upon how google+ connects to google docs and blogger and so forth.

22:01:51 SusanEttenheim: I think it's an age appropriate issue

22:02:05 tengrrl: The last I heard you had to be 18 to use it, so it's not really open to K12 yet.

22:02:23 ShannonSullivan: I cab't seem to access Google+

22:02:24 SusanEttenheim: it's not available to Google Apps yet either

22:02:32 SusanEttenheim: just consumer gmail accounts

22:02:32 Danielle Beach: I think students are more willing to take risks online; my students have expressed that they are worried about saying something wrong and being stared at by their peers.

22:02:39 tengrrl: right susanE

22:02:39 PeggyG: do you have an invite Shannon?

22:03:05 SusanEttenheim: Shannon are you using a consumer gmail account?

22:03:11 SusanEttenheim: I too can send you an invite

22:03:12 ShannonSullivan: no.

22:03:21 ShannonSullivan: I use gmail but

22:03:23 PeggyG: that's about when school starts up here in AZ too :-) Aug 10-15

22:03:24 SusanEttenheim: do you have a gmail account?

22:03:25 ShannonSullivan: with my site.

22:03:37 ShannonSullivan: So do I need to set a stand alone gmail?

22:03:40 SusanEttenheim: you do need to use a gmail account

22:03:43 SusanEttenheim: yes

22:03:51 SusanEttenheim: then any of us can send you an invite

22:03:55 monika: thanks guys..
