19:50:38  Scott Shelhart @kd9sr  I dont aslways make the live show, but Seedlings is always on my podcast feed.
19:50:40  cheryloakes~seedlings  Absolutely, it is an explosive time.
19:50:50  connect2jamie  Wish I were hearing more conversation in my real life about topics that Waiting for Superman brought up....
19:50:52  cheryloakes~seedlings  Thanks, Scott, we appreciate that.
19:51:22  connect2jamie  My online community is all over the topic. Not so much my community IRL
19:51:22  cheryloakes~seedlings  Yes, connect2jamie, it means finding good people to chat and reflect.
19:51:43  cbrannon  My delicous links are growing.  Love it!  We are getting ready for EdCampBham down here...some of this stuff is gold.  thanks.
19:52:19  cheryloakes~seedlings  cbrannon, check out bobsprankle.com and edtechtalk.com  we will post the links to our delicious Geek of the week, tomorrow.
19:52:19  wmchamberlain  @cbrannon I enjoyed edcampKC, it is great to get to see online friends face to face
19:53:37  mslaneeus  Standardizing education a big concern here too.
19:53:42  cbrannon  @Will, will do.  Thanks!
19:55:14  cheryloakes~seedlings  The National TechPlan has goals for us by 2015!!!http://www.ed.gov/technology/netp-2010
19:55:21  connect2jamie  So true--Sir Ken Robinson is amazing--and that RSA piece IS brilliant!
 19:55:26  connect2jamie  Wow!
19:55:41  alicebarr (SEEDlings)  I see smoething new each time I watch it
 19:55:46  alicebarr (SEEDlings)  something
 19:56:02  connect2jamie  @alice That's what is amazing about him, isn't it?
19:56:02  Michael Richards  Sir Ken Robinson rocks.  Here is his blog sirkenrobinson.com/skr
19:57:22  alicebarr (SEEDlings)  @connect2jamie Yes I think what is so engaging about his work is that it's different every time
 19:57:42  connect2jamie  I love his brain! :)
 19:58:13  alicebarr (SEEDlings)  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDZFcDGpL4U&feature=player_embedded
19:58:32  alicebarr (SEEDlings)  THE RSA video... Now everyone wait or we will lose you!
 19:58:56  cheryloakes~seedlings  Oh, alice, they can multi-task. :p
19:59:10  alicebarr (SEEDlings)  @connect2jamie Read his book with reading group of students this summer. Very cool
19:59:18  mslaneeus  Just watched this video at our last staff meeting.  Really makes you think.  If only....
 19:59:32  alicebarr (SEEDlings)  :D
19:59:47  mslaneeus  LOVED the part where he compares our current education system to a factory.
19:59:58  alicebarr (SEEDlings)  @mslaneeus What did the staff think?
20:00:28  elawson  Our 21st century team will watch this video on Monday. I can't wait to see what they think.
20:00:29  connect2jamie  @alice interesting reading group. Did his message resonate with the kids?
20:00:30  mslaneeus  Lots of discussion.  The will to change.  Our current provincial govt is in some turmoil but keeps screaming assessment so we have worries.
20:00:52  cheryloakes~seedlings  Eric, take notes and let us know.
20:00:59  elawson  I'll podcast it for you Cheryl
 20:01:08  cheryloakes~seedlings  YES! a podcast....
20:01:41  mslaneeus  @ Alice They talk 21st century learning but are dragging heels.....it will have to be a groundswell......
20:01:51  wmchamberlain  There was rock in the 80's? I don't remember that...
20:01:52  alicebarr (SEEDlings)  @connect2jamie Yes it did. They are thinking about some possibilities for "other" kinds of learning at our high school. Not sure what it looks like yet, but it really got them thinking.
20:02:44  connect2jamie  @alice I love that students were energized by Sir Ken's message. Gives me hope.
20:02:58  cbrannon  Family duty calls.  Will have to catch up later.  Thanks for the great resources, tips and thought provoking material...
20:03:07  cheryloakes~seedlings  thanks for stopping cbrannon
20:03:12  alicebarr (SEEDlings)  @mslaneeus Yes, tough to get through the assessment challenge
 20:03:12  connect2jamie  Good night @cbrannon!
20:03:36  alicebarr (SEEDlings)  I like that "VALUE in thinking differently"
20:04:34  mslaneeus  I think it also has to be aimed at our individual interests\
20:04:46  mslaneeus  Find our interest and you find our passion.
 20:04:52  di_chamberlain  test test test
20:05:06  cheryloakes~seedlings  so many gifts , every child, we should celebrate these gifts
20:05:17  alicebarr (SEEDlings)  Students want teachers to know about their passion.
 20:05:22  mslaneeus  Exactly.
20:05:48  cheryloakes~seedlings  Yes, Alice, student passion and engagement.
20:07:06  alicebarr (SEEDlings)  WE have been having interesting discussions at school becasue college essays are due and they are often about passion
20:07:16  cheryloakes~seedlings  how many of your schools have a scripted reading program?
 20:07:28  mslaneeus  Not ours.
20:07:38  alicebarr (SEEDlings)  Too bad kids don't get a chance to express those until senior year sometimes :(
20:07:39  wmchamberlain  We have Reading First
20:07:41  connect2jamie  Kids' passions--that is what makes my job as a librarian so great! I get a chance to connect my kids with their passions...at least some of the time I do! I try to buy books that feed their passions.
20:07:43  Scott Shelhart @kd9sr  curiculum pacing/mapping is mandated in many states :-(
20:08:00  cheryloakes~seedlings   thanks for the feedback
20:08:04  connect2jamie  And BTW, I'm in an elementary school, so their passions are quite innocent most of the time! LOL!
20:08:10  ktenkely  Being a specialist does make it easier to celebrate passions!
20:08:17  alicebarr (SEEDlings)  @connect2jamie How wonderful!!!
20:08:40  connect2jamie  best job in the building, most days!
 20:08:55  cheryloakes~seedlings  yes, connect2jamie, how lucky!
20:09:04  alicebarr (SEEDlings)  @kelly I agree me too as integrator. We get to talk to kids about "other stuff"
20:09:17  ktenkely  It makes such a difference!
20:10:16  connect2jamie  Yes--I think "specialized" teachers do have an easier way of working kids' passions into the day. I know it's easier for me now than when I taught Algebra!
20:12:07  mslaneeus  Just went to a workshop with Ruth Sutton (from the UK) and she was talking about the subjectivity of standardized tests.  Excellent presentation.
20:12:12  di_chamberlain  What do you think about students retaking tests they fail?
20:12:39  cheryloakes~seedlings  Di, I am in a HS resource room, and we lobby for that and allow for it when we can!!
20:13:39  connect2jamie  Our students are allowed a retake on any grade that is below 70%. Very hard for our elem tchrs to fit that into the day. In MS and HS, it's a big problem!
20:14:23  di_chamberlain  Mobile County, AL has a new policy saying teachers MUST allow students to retake tests they fail
20:14:31  cheryloakes~seedlings  Yes, it is hard to squeeze this into a day, but if a student has a 60, and an F, what purpose do they have to come back again.
20:14:44  cheryloakes~seedlings  Wow, Di, that is amazing.
20:14:58  connect2jamie  That is SUCH a great analogy! We don't expect every kid to lose their teeth on the same day! I love that! Why are we expecting every kid to learn to read at a standardized level, etc.?
20:15:23  cheryloakes~seedlings  Right, connect2jamie.   Just like all kids are not born on Sept. 1
20:15:52  mslaneeus  @ Jamie  Because, as SKR points out, we bunch them according to age.  Not individuals.
 20:16:16  di_chamberlain  http://tinyurl.com/2evzvaf   This is the blog
20:16:40  cheryloakes~seedlings  Thanks, Di, this is the Mobile, AL article, right
 20:16:46  di_chamberlain  yes
 20:16:51  cheryloakes~seedlings  Hello Emily!
20:16:53  mslaneeus  @ Jamie It's like saying they have an expiration date.  You must read by this age or you are not good any longer.
 20:17:11  alicebarr (SEEDlings)  Wow
20:17:20  alicebarr (SEEDlings)  I want to go to this school
 20:17:41  cheryloakes~seedlings  Twitacad, sounds expansive!
20:18:00  connect2jamie  @cheryl Yes--in TX we've had a big uproar about failing grades. Our district, and several n the Houston area lobbied the state gov b/c we have always made the lowest grading period grade possible be a 50%. If a kid got a 30% as avg one rpt card, there's very little way he/she could ever make high enough grades to pass the semester. State didn't like it. We lost the battle this fall. We must put the "true" grade. Little reason for kids to keep trying.
20:18:27  alicebarr (SEEDlings)  Oh that is so amazing! So cool
20:18:47  cheryloakes~seedlings  Oh, connect2jamie, how sad keep them in a box.:-(
20:18:56  alicebarr (SEEDlings)  OOps I was talking about Twitacad
20:19:38  connect2jamie  @cheryl Yes, our superintendent really went to bat for kids--along with several others in the Houston area. Very sad that they lost.
20:20:06  wmchamberlain  What about shared experiences/history/curriculum. Isn't it important for society that we have some things in common?
 20:20:32  connect2jamie  @mslaneeus expiration date--and they're only FIVE!!!
20:20:52  di_chamberlain  When did passing a test become more important than learning?
20:21:06  mslaneeus  When politicians became involved..
20:21:19  di_chamberlain  Can they pass the test?
20:21:22  connect2jamie  So sad, but it did, @di. Hopefully it will change before the end of my career!
 20:21:34  mslaneeus  @ Di.....not a chance!
20:22:10  wmchamberlain  Similar curriculum but using universal design principles?
20:22:19  connect2jamie  Exactly! When politicians got involved! And sadly, many of thost politicians were Texans......sorry guys! ;)
20:22:37  elawson  That would be great!
 20:22:59  cheryloakes~seedlings  I agree , Eric.

20:23:01  connect2jamie  The dogs have let us down?
20:23:02  di_chamberlain  Maybe they should be able to consistantly improve their scores
