Teachers Teaching Teachers #195 - Spring Curriculum Share - 04.07.10

Post-Show description:

It’s Spring in the northern hemisphere. Some of us have five or six, others nine weeks left in the academic year. It’s a great time to try out something new or to reflect on what we tried this year. What are you doing this academic season? Listen to this episode of Teachers Teaching Teachers, then let us know what you are doing this spring.

  • You will <fill in the blank>
  • Paul Allison and Rachel Smith report on how Evoke is going, perhaps with a student or two.
  • Susan Ettenheim and Chris Sloan talk about how their collaborations in digital photography classes are going.
  • Matt Montagne and a student discuss Goggle Apps and the plans, at the time, for Earth Day, which was a success again this year.

21:04:16 carolteach4: Hey, Matt. I've got all the pictures together to make my earthday video in Photostory 3 - once I get it done, where do I go to upload it - or link from YouTube?
21:04:40 matt montagne: wow!!! 93 degrees!
21:04:47 carolteach4: I have pics of my husband taking the brimming bowl of vegetable scraps up to the compost pile on the hill - and more.
21:04:50 matt montagne: yes, carolteach...that is the basic process...
21:04:59 matt montagne: just tag your video "earthcast10"
21:05:01 PeggyG: I'm really getting excited about Earthcast!!
21:05:10 matt montagne: you can also post it as a "response" to the video that I posted...
21:05:14 carolteach4: Oh o.k.
21:05:24 matt montagne: so if you go to my video, you'll see a link that says, "Video Response" or something like that
21:05:46 SusanEttenheim: hi lorna welcome!
21:05:52 Lorna: Hello all
21:05:58 carolteach4: Can you give us the link to that you tube video? I think I saved it in my favorites, but I'm not sure. In fact, I'd forgotten about it. That was what I was trying to remember.
21:06:05 matt montagne: absolutely
21:06:07 matt montagne: hold up
21:06:10 Lorna: heard there is a gathering
21:06:33 PeggyG: This link will give you lots of ideas about ways to get involved in Earthcast 2010 http://earthbridges.wikispaces.com/Ways+to+Participate
21:06:43 PeggyG: Hi Lorna-welcome to the gathering!!
21:06:44 matt montagne: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfBSqUHvkgU
21:07:31 carolteach4: @Matt and Peggy - thanks to both of you.
21:07:49 chris sloan: I teach photography too, so I'd like to know more about what photos you're talking about for Earth Day.
21:08:08 matt montagne: sure, peggy...not sure where the video response link is, but it is somewhere in there...
21:08:17 PeggyG: lots of relevent links on the Earthbridges wiki for you including the YouTube video challenge, our Voicethread, and much more :-)
21:08:48 carolteach4: I checked out the Earthcast2010 voice thread - no one except me has added to it -is it too early?
21:09:12 matt montagne: its still early, Carolteach...but it is getting a little late too
21:09:14 PeggyG: yes it's early but get started carolteach4--I need to add my voice too
21:10:26 carolteach4: Here is a link to a photo contest for Earthday from Artsonia - ends this Sunday.
21:10:30 carolteach4: Bing(TM) Earth Day Photo Contest - www.artsonia.com/earthday.
21:10:37 matt montagne: actually, you do a video response by clicking in the comment box and then clicking the attach a video link to the right...you can then choose the video that you created and posted
21:11:51 PeggyG: yes-that's it Matt! and tag it earthcast10
21:12:00 Paul Allison: Susan and Chris have been working together for the last 2+ years in digital photogrphy classes -- Chris in Utah, Susan in NYC.
21:12:15 SusanEttenheim: any of you working in digital photography?
21:12:55 chris sloan: Here's a link to a photo & text combo that a student of mine has done.  http://youthvoices.net/node/34236
21:13:44 carolteach4: Most of our seventh graders are at Nature's Classroom this week, but the kids who stayed behind (about 25 of 200) are doing a photography scavenger hunt tomorrow. It will be all pulled together, and the group will view all the pictures during our last period.
21:14:24 PeggyG: what a great idea carolteach4!
21:14:41 matt montagne: wow, beautiful work, Chris and students...incredible
21:14:55 carolteach4: @Chris - nice image!
21:14:57 matt montagne: GIMP
21:15:01 matt montagne: AVIARY
21:15:13 PeggyG: we could learn a LOT from Chris's students about photography!
21:15:17 matt montagne: aviary is integrated into google apps and is like adobe CS3
21:15:48 carolteach4: Ohhh - I can't remember, but there is an online editor I heard of on a webinar last week where you can do just this.
21:16:32 carolteach4: You can do great things with photos at www.bighugelabs.com - great site, but it's now BLOCKED at our school.
21:17:20 carolteach4: What about the photo a day challenge that Bob Sprankle is trying to do on Flicker, I think.
21:17:22 PeggyG: http://www.sh1ft.org/26things/
21:17:59 PeggyG: the 365 day photo project! it's a fantastic way to get better at taking pictures!

21:18:24 PeggyG: I actually pay for bighugelabs because I love it so much!! :-)

21:19:50 carolteach4: www.artsonia.com/earthday
21:22:28 matt montagne: your students work is simply beautiful chris
21:22:41 PeggyG: I heard a Kevin Honeycutt podcast that talked about saving photos as .tiff so students can zoom way in on the detail to notice things they may not see at first and then write about it
21:23:55 matt montagne: wow, Peggy...that is a great idea!
21:24:36 chris sloan: Thanks Matt.  Some of my students do have an incredible eye.
21:24:39 carolteach4: Oh, my. We go until June 25 this year, barring any more snow days.
21:25:14 PeggyG: there's still plenty of room to sign up for a slot! :-)
21:25:43 PeggyG: we really want to hear the student voice in Earthcast10!!
21:26:38 carolteach4: Aviary? Available in Google Apps for Education? I missed that. Free?
21:26:45 chris sloan: sign up for a slot?  I don't get what you mean.
21:27:25 carolteach4: Can you give us the spelling, Matt?
21:27:38 PeggyG: on the Earthcast schedule Chris
21:27:39 Lorna: http://aviary.com is this it?
21:28:00 PeggyG: there are 30-minute and 1 hour slots to host stories/info about earth day activities, etc.
21:28:05 carolteach4: The kids are loving it at our school.
21:28:14 chris sloan: oh I get it now
21:28:27 PeggyG: http://earthbridges.wikispaces.com/Earthcast+2010  (schedule to sign up)
21:30:09 PeggyG: it is tricky in Sites to add comments
21:30:20 carolteach4: @Matt - does Aviary display all artwork through the portal in Google Apps? I wouldn't want something inappropriate for grades 7 and 8 showing up.
21:30:26 SusanEttenheim: more and more schools are starting to use Sites for eportfolios
21:30:51 PeggyG: yes Susan!! seems to be a great place for eportfolios!
21:31:17 SusanEttenheim: I know Sarah in Maine has built a template for all students and I'm sure others have done it too
21:31:21 SusanEttenheim: hi rachel welcome!
21:31:27 SusanEttenheim: please introduce yourself!
21:31:27 Rachel Smith: Hi there!
21:31:33 carolteach4: The file cabinet page allows you to upload any kind of file - including .swf, mpeg, mp3, wmv. etc
21:32:03 SusanEttenheim: yes but carol can you comment on those?
21:32:08 PeggyG: those are wonderful ideas Matt!! lots of choice and flexibility
21:32:13 Rachel Smith: I'm Rachel Smith from the New Media Consortium (http://www.nmc.org). I'm a former teacher, a game-player, and one of the agents on Urgent EVOKE :-)
21:32:26 PeggyG: Great to see you again Rachel!!!
21:32:49 Rachel Smith: Hi Peggy, great to see you too!
21:32:59 PeggyG: are you going to share how EVOKE relates to Earth Day activities? :-)
21:33:05 carolteach4: No -I don't think so. There are specialized pages in the Google Docs for forums, I believe. I have only used the web page and the file cabinet with our kids.
21:33:24 PeggyG: teachers are great "borrowers" :-)
21:33:31 carolteach4: I was looking at the templates samples yesterday and saw some wonderful ones.
21:34:01 carolteach4: @Matt - you are correct.
21:34:56 SusanEttenheim: carol for eportfolios?
21:35:25 carolteach4: Oh, Rachel. I heard the show with you as featured guest a few weeks ago.
21:35:32 PeggyG: are you listening in itunes Rachel?
21:35:44 Rachel Smith: Aha! Yes, thank you Peggy
21:36:13 Rachel Smith: Hi Carol, how are you?

21:36:54 SusanEttenheim: thank you peggy!
21:36:55 carolteach4: I'm good. One of my middle schooler now in high school came to visit, and I told him about Evoke, but I haven't heard back from him.
21:37:56 PeggyG: that's the key!!! tag everything you post with earthcast10
21:38:07 PeggyG: still space available :-)
21:38:19 PeggyG: http://earthbridges.wikispaces.com/Earthcast+2010
21:38:36 PeggyG: the half hour slots are a great addition
21:39:07 PeggyG: the student broadcasts last year by Gator Radio were the highlights of the event for me!!!
21:40:01 PeggyG: the Gator Radio students conducted some interviews with some really interesting people around the world about what they are doing to "go green"
21:40:30 PeggyG: Sarah--you won't have any trouble filling the time!!
21:40:52 SusanEttenheim: invite lots of guests and introduce them to each other!
21:41:17 PeggyG: Rachel is an incredible mentor in EVOKE! I haven't tapped her yet but she makes herself sooooo available to everyone!
21:41:35 SusanEttenheim: I agree Peggy!

21:45:53 SusanEttenheim: ahh really peggy - thanks!
21:45:57 PeggyG: http://www.urgentevoke.com/forum/topics/calling-all-teachers
21:46:25 PeggyG: if you don't float the text chat window you can get logged out of the chat
21:46:44 Paul Allison: My students on Evoke: http://youthvoices.net/keywords/evoke123
21:46:59 PeggyG: outstanding connection between second life and evoke!! makes so much sense!
21:47:27 PeggyG: http://urgentevoke.wikia.com/wiki/Urgent_Evoke_Wiki
21:47:43 Rachel Smith: Thanks Peggy!
21:48:15 PeggyG: http://urgentevoke.wikia.com/wiki/EVOKing_in_the_Classroom
21:49:15 PeggyG: something new and exciting to look forward to every week!!
21:49:45 PeggyG: I participated in Earth Hour too!! very cool!!
21:50:09 PeggyG: I didn't realize how important light was when I was working during that hour!
21:50:25 carolteach4: @matt - just read the agreement terms from Aviary, and they said under no circumstances should it be used with students under 13 without constant supervision, so I canceled my request to add it to our domain. Our 7th graders come in age 12.
21:51:12 Rachel Smith: I have to slip out and do some Mom things -- it's great to see you all again! Matt, it sounds like you are doing some really interesting things there
21:51:31 SusanEttenheim: thanks for coming by rachel!
21:51:48 Rachel Smith: I wish I could stay! I'll come back another night :-)
21:52:29 PeggyG again: crashed my browser!! too many tabs open!! thank goodness the audio keeps going in itunes :-)
21:52:42 PeggyG again: he is an incredible keynote!
21:52:42 SusanEttenheim: that's funny peggy!
21:52:55 PeggyG again: it will be so interesting to hear his perspective from China!
21:53:51 PeggyG again: http://earthcast.posterous.com/announcing-the-earthcast-2010-keynote-spe...
21:54:19 carolteach4: @peggy - I keep my Google Doc open where I have collected all the webinars I've attended and any links - I copy the links, paste them into the doc, then close the tabs. I love my Google Doc. Without this really easy way to track all the webinars I've attended, I'd forget a lot of what I've done. It's a great resource.
21:54:23 PeggyG again: we have to keep the content going for 24 hours and most of us can't stay online the whole night!!!!
21:54:39 PeggyG again: great idea carolteach4 :-)
21:55:24 PeggyG again: http://earthbridges.wikispaces.com/Ways+to+Participate  this site explains some of the ways you can get involved with contact info
21:55:26 carolteach4: Your webinars at noon on Saturday are so great; wish I could attend more of them.
21:55:54 PeggyG again: is Gator Radio going to join up with Ben N Ben from Seedlings for part of their webcast?
21:56:11 PeggyG again: thanks carolteach4! that's why the recordings are so great!!
21:56:26 PeggyG again: that would be a really fun project Susan!!
21:56:44 carolteach4: It's nearly ten here in CT, and I'm really fading, but this is great.
21:56:55 PeggyG again: you could let the students sleep in the next day :-) hahahaha
21:57:09 PeggyG again: love that idea Susan!!
21:57:19 carolteach4: I'm not sure about participating in the webcast, but I hope to have our kids add to the Voice Thread.
21:57:45 PeggyG again: it's easy to find people to interview in every community
21:58:43 carolteach4: You know - we have a very active environmental group in Bethany; perhaps I can hook them up to do a spot with Earthcast2010. That would be cool. They sponsor a contest for our school kids every year.
21:58:43 PeggyG again: are the Gator Radio students going to bring back the girl who created the Earth Savers for Kids website? I would love to hear from them again
22:00:01 carolteach4: Our 7th graders are reading Seedfolks - right now. Perhaps they could do something for Earthcast. Gee, I hope I can remember this and advertise it tomorrow.
22:00:08 PeggyG again: last year Mrs. Durff went up and down the halls in her school asking people what they are doing to help make the world greener--it was great!
22:00:42 PeggyG again: http://www.earthsaversclubforkids.com/
22:00:51 carolteach4: My husband has planted snow peas and red lettuce. Both are up and growing fast. Square-foot gardening.

22:01:31 PeggyG again: me too Paul!! be Chris Sloan for a week :-)
22:01:48 carolteach4: Yes, my husband had to go to raised beds since our whole back yard is shale.
22:02:01 SusanEttenheim: how did you build them?
22:02:12 SusanEttenheim: we're thinking of doing that in Mass this summer
22:02:21 SusanEttenheim: but the cost really adds up!
22:02:34 carolteach4: He bought boards and fastened them into a square, set them on top of the grass, and filled them with soil.
22:02:49 SusanEttenheim: how big?
22:02:57 Paul Allison: Raised beds = my favorite new word.
22:03:19 SusanEttenheim: serious business now here ;)
22:03:24 PeggyG again: that contest sounds great!!! bike to school to save the environment!!
22:03:30 carolteach4: Gee - I'm not sure - maybe 4' square. There are four on the flat part of our lawn and two on the hill.
22:03:42 SusanEttenheim: wow
22:03:49 PeggyG again: kids love the competitions between faculty and students!
22:04:12 PeggyG again: that sounds dangerous to me!! biking on bridges!!
22:04:16 carolteach4: Once the peas are pretty much by, he'll put in cherry tomatoes.
22:04:35 PeggyG again: you're a grownup Paul!!
22:04:35 SusanEttenheim: yumm
22:05:03 Paul Allison: Yeah I know.
22:05:07 PeggyG again: most kids who have bikes also have bike locks
22:06:28 carolteach4: Who orchestrated getting the car companies to come in?
22:06:37 PeggyG again: those are fantastic ideas!!! very inspiring!!
22:06:57 carolteach4: I saw that film on killing the electric car when I substituted in our teched class one day.
22:07:29 PeggyG again: http://www.facebook.com/earthcast  Become a fan!!
22:07:43 carolteach4: Yes, please add to the voice thread. I'm lonely out there.
22:07:51 Lorna: lots of great energy
22:07:58 matt montagne: thanks, Peggy
22:08:03 matt montagne: and all..
22:08:16 PeggyG again: http://earthcast.posterous.com/ follow earthcast posts on Posterous :-)
22:08:33 carolteach4: Thanks, everyone. Was going to leave early, but stayed.
