Instructional-Design-Live #11 Online Problem Based Learning with Maggi Savin Baden

This week, we were joined by Maggi Savin Baden, professor of Higher Education Research at Coventry University in the UK. She has been investigating problem based learning for a number of years and is currently pursuing research into applications within Second Life.

Topics include:

  • Getting started with PBLonline: key recommendations
  • Effective teambuilding in online courses
  • Value of Second Life for PBLonline
  • Institutional perspective on PBL: Can it serve as a model of learning at an institutional level

There are a number of helpful links to her work in the chat transcript. Happy Spring break to many of you!

2010-03-26 13:21:14 [Message] DBlack -> Room 1: One problem that occurs to me with views expressed by all thus far is the fact that many (most?) professors teaching online courses, knowing little about online learning and teaching, incorporate group activities (and other assignments) that are head-fakes to genuinely useful learning activities. Consequently, they are not well-executed... by instructors or learners.
2010-03-26 13:21:16 [Message] mrsdurff -> Room 1: joni - there are two methods - drag it from a Word doc or type sth before it then paste
2010-03-26 13:22:29 [Message] jonidunlap -> Room 1: Thanks mrsduff :-)

2010-03-26 13:31:52 [Message] jonidunlap -> Room 1: That is an issue for us these days too. Testing has influence over instructional strategies.
2010-03-26 13:32:48 [Message] jonidunlap -> Room 1: I think faculty can move forward when they have good examples to view.
2010-03-26 13:32:56 [Message] mrsdurff -> Room 1: those SATs could be redesigned to be a series of problems to be solved either in text/audio/visual
2010-03-26 13:33:15 [Message] mrsdurff -> Room 1: but thee companies would need incentive
