2009-04-26 11:37:35  jackiegerstein -> -EdTechTalk: People have some interesting ideas about ownership - don't they?
2009-04-26 11:37:56  CathyJo in SC -> -EdTechTalk: going to find out WHY my road is still closed ---some areas still on fire form wildfire.
2009-04-26 11:38:02  minhaaj -> -EdTechTalk: well depends where people live. In east nobody can convinced about ownership of 'content'

2009-04-26 11:38:18  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: LOve that Dog is such a great book! The kids love it!

2009-04-26 11:39:33  Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: The first "course" I took re using tech in the classroom had as 1st assignment to take one of your current lessons and see if adding tech makes sense or improves it.
2009-04-26 11:39:33  minhaaj -> -EdTechTalk: good project i must say.
2009-04-26 11:39:35  minhaaj -> -EdTechTalk: loved it.

2009-04-26 11:43:03  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: I had never heard of roadkill before I learned about it from Sheila
2009-04-26 11:43:09  Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: I tried to get my MS science teachers to join in... no luck. Married to their own curriculum
2009-04-26 11:43:25  LParisi -> -EdTechTalk: Anyone want in to the skype call?
2009-04-26 11:43:51  Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: @Peggy G- my BIL thinks of roadkill as dining out

2009-04-26 11:46:32  bcrosby -> -EdTechTalk: Hi all!
2009-04-26 11:46:41  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: one of the teachers on Youth Voices provides some stem starters for literature feedback and it seems to support more constructive feedback.
2009-04-26 11:46:44  LParisi -> -EdTechTalk: Hey Brian...can I skype you in?
2009-04-26 11:46:56  Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: I think that jumping to online or collaboration even within the classroom, takes some teaching ahead of time and practice.
2009-04-26 11:47:09  bcrosby -> -EdTechTalk: Lisa just like we talked about in our class blogs, not just cool post.
2009-04-26 11:47:26  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: I agree Maureen--the kids really need to be taught about online collaboration
2009-04-26 11:47:32  bcrosby -> -EdTechTalk: Sure, let me get headphones
2009-04-26 11:48:16  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: @Lisa-your kids did such a great job in the chat room during earthcastathon! Very well prepared!!
2009-04-26 11:48:32  minhaaj -> -EdTechTalk: http://openhighschool.org/ anyone has heard about open school from David Wiley/
2009-04-26 11:48:55  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: much easier to start by doing old things in new ways
2009-04-26 11:49:13  CathyJo in SC -> -EdTechTalk: "hello"
2009-04-26 11:49:15  bcrosby -> -EdTechTalk: Lisa, do I just Skype into you?
2009-04-26 11:49:31  Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: I might get to have 3rd graders next year- for both computer and science... still up in the air. I hope so- will give me time to actually integrate/embed and get involved in collaborative projects. Teaching so many different grade levels and 2 subjects has not given me time.
2009-04-26 11:49:55  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: that sounds great Maureen!!
2009-04-26 11:50:49  Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: @Peggy- it'll mean teaching 3-9 computer and 3rd science... we'll see. Lots of prep, but I'd rather do it than not be able to try what I want to do.
2009-04-26 11:51:11  CathyJo in SC -> -EdTechTalk: @bcrosby guess that means yes--just skype in
2009-04-26 11:51:20  Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: yeah Maria is back!

2009-04-26 11:51:32  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: yes that is lots of prep!!
2009-04-26 11:52:05  CathyJo in SC -> -EdTechTalk: Hello Brian!!
2009-04-26 11:52:44  Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: Do you think it's harder for "specials" than for clasroom teachers? I don't feel like I have enough flexibility. Sheila- how do you do it with 1x/wk?
2009-04-26 11:53:13  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: how many times a week do you see your computer classes Maureen?
2009-04-26 11:53:29  sheila -> -EdTechTalk: Well, that's the art teacher. So I have my science students do the blog work.
2009-04-26 11:53:41  Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: Right now- 6th and 9th 1X/wk and 7 and 8 2x/wk 40 min classes

2009-04-26 11:55:10  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: @Maria-have you had your kids create alphabet videos for Alphabet Antics with Kathy Cassidy? I love those videos!
2009-04-26 11:55:52  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: I forgot--Maria can't see the chat :-(
2009-04-26 11:56:19  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: time zone considerations can be very challenging with synchronous projects
2009-04-26 11:57:28  sheila -> -EdTechTalk: Yes, Peggy
2009-04-26 11:57:39  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: I need to find your NECC presentation and get it on my planner!! That sounds great!
2009-04-26 11:57:41  les -> -EdTechTalk: I agree about the time zone issues too
2009-04-26 11:58:53  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: I really like that idea Maria--creating your own classroom wiki for your kids to chare their projects to collaborate
2009-04-26 11:59:02  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: share--oops
2009-04-26 11:59:51  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: that would make great graphing activities for the kids--things like what's happening in your time zone at a certain day/time
2009-04-26 12:00:09  jackiegerstein -> -EdTechTalk: Here is an example of my student's classroom project on Digital Storytelling - working in small group creating their stories - info on the wiki http://discoverychange.pbwiki.com/Writers%27-Workshop

2009-04-26 12:02:56  jackiegerstein -> -EdTechTalk: I am writing a blog on the importance of an audience - such a powerful motivator
2009-04-26 12:03:15  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: Google Earth provides so many fantastic ways to collaborate with other classes!
2009-04-26 12:03:43  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: has anyone ever tried to create a lit trip collaboratively with another class?
2009-04-26 12:04:01  amrowley -> -EdTechTalk: @jackiegerstein I'm new. Could you share the name of your blog?

2009-04-26 12:06:14  amrowley -> -EdTechTalk: I hang my head in shame.... Anyway the one you are writing re student writing and audience
2009-04-26 12:06:21  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: the earthcast provided some great geography learning opportunities :-)
2009-04-26 12:06:24  jackiegerstein -> -EdTechTalk: http://discoverychange.pbwiki.com/FrontPage
2009-04-26 12:06:28  Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: @jackie GE stutters... glogster is painfully slow- it's the graphics that kill us
2009-04-26 12:06:53  jackiegerstein -> -EdTechTalk: At least Glogster is not blocked at your school LOL
2009-04-26 12:07:17  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: that's a great use for google earth Maria!!

2009-04-26 12:07:58  jackiegerstein -> -EdTechTalk: @Maureen then is there a downside?
2009-04-26 12:08:40  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: what awesome virtual field trips examples!!

2009-04-26 12:11:08  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: that's exciting Jackie!! what kinds of things do they ask him to look up?
2009-04-26 12:11:32  jackiegerstein -> -EdTechTalk: Clustermap is one of the best tools "ever" for showing the power of an audience.  Our Creative Web Tools project has over 7000 hits - kids love looking at the numbers and the countries where they have come.
2009-04-26 12:11:54  amrowley -> -EdTechTalk: @jackiegerstein a researcher in training
2009-04-26 12:12:08  jackiegerstein -> -EdTechTalk: @Peggy - their homes, vacations, favoriite places.  he loves finding them.
2009-04-26 12:12:20  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: I saw the cutest voicethread yesterday on Obama right after election with original drawings done by the kids--it was great and had participation from other classes
2009-04-26 12:12:28  sheila -> -EdTechTalk: @jackie - good point about the map.
2009-04-26 12:13:18  Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: Sheila you are the only one Ihear
2009-04-26 12:14:49  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: I think using ustream for the show requires more bandwidth--harder to stay connected!
2009-04-26 12:15:10  LParisi -> -EdTechTalk: We're all back
2009-04-26 12:15:40  sheila -> -EdTechTalk: Welcome ms108

2009-04-26 12:18:03  Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: Lisa- when you first started, did you have trouble getting other classes to come in and collaborate?
2009-04-26 12:19:17  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: http://www.geovisite.com  this is a neat map for tracking visitors too-map of world with red dots and also green flashing dot for anyone online at the time you check--shows visits from different countries :-)
2009-04-26 12:19:31  ms108 -> -EdTechTalk: I'm not seeing many comments.  Has a conversation begun?  Am I missing some comments?

2009-04-26 12:20:01  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: we're using that tracker on the Classroom 2.0 LIVE website--very interesting!
2009-04-26 12:20:04  JoseRodriguez -> -Webheads: Hi chela.. Here in California..
2009-04-26 12:20:08  sheila -> -EdTechTalk: Maria says that she has time zone clocks in her room where the class friends live.
2009-04-26 12:21:36  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: that's a great idea to have the time zone clocks up in the room! You can do that with multiple clocks on an iGoogle page too :-)
2009-04-26 12:21:45  les -> -EdTechTalk: great idea with the time zone clock.
2009-04-26 12:21:54  jackiegerstein -> -EdTechTalk: I met Peggy through ed networking and she ended up coming to view my class in person - very grateful for the opportunity to add Peggy as a friend!

2009-04-26 12:22:55  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: Skype really opens the doors for online collaboration!
2009-04-26 12:23:39  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: that is such a problem with 40-50 minute periods!!
2009-04-26 12:23:43  CathyJo in SC -> -EdTechTalk: must go for now. Thanks folks.
2009-04-26 12:23:45  Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: @Brian That's been my problem as a "special" It's really hard.
2009-04-26 12:24:07  Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: I've tried to get the classroom teachers to buy in, not yet
2009-04-26 12:24:41  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: just do one Maureen and invite another class to join you--their teachers will be hooked :-)
2009-04-26 12:25:27  jackiegerstein -> -EdTechTalk: The way high school and middle school is actually the problem - but that is another chat
2009-04-26 12:25:38  jackiegerstein -> -EdTechTalk: is scheduled
2009-04-26 12:25:39  LParisi -> -EdTechTalk: Yes, Jackie.
2009-04-26 12:26:05  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: very creative problem solving for time zone differences!
2009-04-26 12:26:46  Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: @Peggy Our school has specials sprinkled thru the day... so far altho they are interested, since it is different- it hasn't happened. Which is why I am really hoping to get the 3rd grade next year for a couple of subjects. Their teacher will help out, if admin will allow it.
2009-04-26 12:27:24  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: yes starting small makes it seem more doable for reluctant teachers
2009-04-26 12:27:39  jackiegerstein -> -EdTechTalk: Flat classroom project - Julie Lindsay and Vicki Davis spoke about this at the SL Eduverse ISTE talk last week http://www.iste-eduverse.org/
2009-04-26 12:29:09  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: I missed that Jackie but I've heard them present Flat Classroom and they have it all figured out for the global collaboration! Such a fantastic example!
2009-04-26 12:30:15  Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: I tried to get the gym teacher and the 4th grade teachers to do it....they said yes, but didn't
2009-04-26 12:30:47  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: I know one of the problems with specials is that it often is a prep period for the teacher
2009-04-26 12:30:59  Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: @peggy- yes that is an isue
2009-04-26 12:31:02  Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: issue

2009-04-26 12:32:08  Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: @lisa I know we'll get there, but it is painfully slow and have yet to get admin support or other teachers to try it. Baby steps...
2009-04-26 12:33:22  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: we would never yell at you Lisa!! you're always so creative when it comes to problem solving!
2009-04-26 12:33:34  Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: @ Lisa- my 3rd grade teacher has 3 preps a week... she can't give them up, but is willing- just doesn't have the time
2009-04-26 12:34:20  Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: I know it's time to close... but how do you get teachers who are married to their currciulum to give up time/make a change?
2009-04-26 12:34:22  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: that is a very important point Lisa! need to change the idea that everyone is a separate entity in a school
2009-04-26 12:35:04  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: that would make a great show conversation Maureen!

2009-04-26 12:35:37  PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: somehow they have to see that this will enhance their curriculum
