21:10:32 SusanEttenheim: well, you are ahead of me!
21:10:47 PeggyG: What a wonderfully creative site! Space 3
21:11:04 SusanEttenheim: how many of you have student work in it?
21:11:20 SusanEttenheim: in Space?
21:11:29 SusanEttenheim: very exciting project!
21:11:53 SusanEttenheim: sheila welcome!
21:12:00 sheila: Hi all!
21:12:00 PeggyG: I haven't been on the Space site for about a month and there are so many new entries! Can't wait to explore them!
21:12:27 SusanEttenheim: sheila - where are you and what do you teach?
21:12:48 matt montagne: @susan I have a photo of when I met Derrall a few weeks back...
21:12:48 sheila: I teach 7th grade science in NH
21:12:50 PeggyG: What does she like about Space? from the student perspective
21:12:53 SusanEttenheim: hi durff!
21:13:03 mrsdurff: hi susan
21:13:05 derrallg: How is Space connected with Youth twitter?
21:13:11 derrallg: hi durff
21:13:21 mrsdurff: hey derrall
21:13:59 matt montagne: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mjmonty/2482988491/ that is a photo with derrallg and my wife at a restaurant in San Fran. Derrall showed us around the city...
21:14:09 matt montagne: hey Mrs. Durff
21:14:26 PeggyG: Oh what a great response! It's so wonderful to be able to see other student work and get feedback from peers. :-)
21:14:39 matt montagne: Hey peggy!
21:14:54 PeggyG: Hi Matt
21:16:04 PeggyG: I used to subscribe to the tweets from Youth Twitter but they got REALLY active and I couldn't keep up with all of them. It was great to learn about new Space postings. :-)
21:16:13 mrsdurff: hey matt - went to refill the bread and coffee
21:16:57 PeggyG: @mrsdurff-I've been following your progress with your homemade bread all day and you're making me hungry!!
21:17:01 derrallg: @durff still eating the bread aren't you getting a little bloated?
21:17:35 matt montagne: the Paly Voice is something to shoot for...awesome online journalism piece...more of a news type of thing, not really lit focuces
21:17:39 PeggyG: Seems like online is the way to go for the literacy publication :-)
21:18:14 mrsdurff: no - ww bread with soy cheese goes a long way
21:18:36 sheila: @Matt - your wife reminds me of one of our teachers! Just checked out your photos.
21:18:48 mrsdurff: this is not my mother's wonderbread
21:18:57 PeggyG: http://judgemedia.blogspot.com/
21:19:01 SusanEttenheim: hi karen welcome!
21:19:10 KarenJanowski: Great to be here!
21:19:13 mrsdurff: she is very pretty matt
21:19:20 KarenJanowski: Absolutely LOVE voicethread
21:19:28 SusanEttenheim: karen please introduce yourself where and what you teach?
21:19:49 matt montagne: @sheila...funny...and thank you Mrs. Durff...she is half italian, half irish
21:20:01 PeggyG: can hear Ben fine :-)
21:20:05 sheila: No she really does!
21:20:16 KarenJanowski: I'm an Assistive & Educational Technology Consultant and teach in the grad school of special education at Simmons College in Boston
21:20:21 mrsdurff: one of these days a newcomer will answer that query with "I teach people"
21:20:28 derrallg: I can verify that picturess don't completely do her justice
21:20:35 SusanEttenheim: welcome karen!
21:20:39 KarenJanowski: thank u
21:20:48 KarenJanowski: what have I missed?
21:20:50 matt montagne: @sheila...I didn't mean that sarcastically...sorry about that... :)
21:21:00 SusanEttenheim: hi nnorris welcome! where and what do you teach?
21:21:05 matt montagne: I suppose the "funny" comment didn't come out just right
21:21:09 mrsdurff: now we need pics from derrall
21:21:14 SusanEttenheim: hi nnorris welcome!
21:21:26 nnorris: Hi
21:21:27 SusanEttenheim: yes chris that was hard for me too
21:21:30 sheila: Or I can't read . . . :)
21:21:37 SusanEttenheim: hi felicia - welcome!
21:21:57 matt montagne: we had a good picture of derral, myself, and my wife, but the waiter had his finger over the lens!!
21:22:49 KarenJanowski: I think Voice Thread is the BEST tool for differentiated instruction and recommend it in my evaluations and in my teaching
21:23:15 derrallg: @durff I have a flickr account plenty of pics
21:23:17 paulallison: http://friendfeed.com/rooms/ttt
21:23:18 SusanEttenheim: Ben and Steve are the founders of Voice Thread - ask away!
21:23:30 SusanEttenheim: hi lfeld welcome
21:23:38 SusanEttenheim: what and where do you teach?
21:23:56 derrallg: I have a question for Ben because a teacher wanted to download the Voicethread
21:24:14 matt montagne: checking out groups right now...looks pretty nice
21:24:31 mrsdurff: can't you embed Voicethreads?
21:24:50 PeggyG: yes you can embed VTs
21:24:56 derrallg: @durff she wanted to put a file on flashdrives
21:25:05 mrsdurff: oh
21:25:22 SusanEttenheim: hi maureen welcome!
21:25:34 mrsdurff: but why if one can put it on the web? maybe that's just me
21:25:41 SusanEttenheim: where are you and what do you teach? please jump in and introduce yourself!
21:25:46 derrallg: I agree
21:25:50 matt montagne: can the changes be added by batch editing??
21:26:11 mrsdurff: i wonder if the founders of Voicethread ever thought it would be so popular?
21:26:22 chris sloan: can you export a VoiceThread as a .mov or .dv?
21:26:29 matt montagne: for example, can 60 students be added to a group at once?
21:26:51 FeliciaG: Hi all!
21:27:00 mrsdurff: hi Felicia
21:27:11 matt montagne: yes, you can batch edit...I just did that and it is slick
21:27:18 PeggyG: You should post what you learned about managing those groups on the VoiceThread forum.
21:27:31 matt montagne: you can add several users to a group at the same time
21:27:56 SusanEttenheim: hi shaun welcome
21:27:56 matt montagne: hey shaun
21:27:58 mrsdurff: hi shaun
21:27:59 FeliciaG: There must be something wrong because it's taking far too long to get on. About 35 minutes.
21:28:14 PeggyG: Could you prepare a webslides list on Diigo with selected VoiceThreads? That would be cool for viewing VTs.
21:28:20 shaun fletcher: hello every1
21:28:22 mrsdurff: really? which browser?
21:28:39 SusanEttenheim: peggy say more? about that?
21:28:42 FeliciaG: Mozilla Firefox
21:28:50 PeggyG: Flock or Firefox is where I create my webslides on Diigo
21:28:52 mrsdurff: to get on here?
21:29:10 maureen/bcdtech: Hi Susan...sorry multi-tasking and not doing it well
21:29:26 FeliciaG: And, I'm still not getting sound.
21:29:27 SusanEttenheim: paeggy maybe it's just me but I'm not sure what webslides are?
21:29:31 FeliciaG: Yes
21:29:33 SusanEttenheim: sorry peggy...
21:29:44 mrsdurff: @Felicia click on the blue link
21:29:50 fuzzhead: Very interesting. Who here is using VoiceThread?
21:29:53 mrsdurff: it will open realplayer
21:29:58 PeggyG: Webslides let's you create a flow of web pages to view. I'm wondering how it would work with VTs. I'll try it out and let you know.
21:29:59 shaun fletcher: i made webslides with all of my students blogs, there is a url for each VT so you could do that
21:30:02 KarenJanowski: i LOVE VT!
21:30:13 SusanEttenheim: fuzzhead - where are you and what do you teach?
21:30:22 sheila: I'm getting more teachers to use it at our school. Love it too!
21:30:30 PeggyG: I'd love to hear about the projects!
21:30:37 shaun fletcher: @fuzzhead I've used it a lot this year
21:30:42 SusanEttenheim: shaun could you share that url here in the chat room please?
21:30:47 fuzzhead: North Andover, MA and I am not an educator, but Elementary school web-master.
21:30:52 KarenJanowski: i've found that of all the 2.0 tools I show teachers, VT is the one they use immediately
21:31:05 KarenJanowski: Hi, fuzzhead - I'm in Reading, MA
21:31:09 PeggyG: We probably can't access the ed.voicethread because it's a closed group.
21:31:22 SusanEttenheim: hi cmtvarok welcome
21:31:31 sheila: @Karen - I grew up in Reading! parents still there!
21:31:34 cmtvarok: thank you susan! hello everyone
21:31:41 KarenJanowski: no way!
21:31:42 shaun fletcher: i'm still in the reg. VT, is it worth going to ED version?
21:31:49 SusanEttenheim: but I think if you have an ed.voicethread you can see others?
21:31:51 mrsdurff: hello
21:31:54 fuzzhead: Hi Karen. How is Reading using technology and Classroom 2.0 type things?
21:32:03 KarenJanowski: @sheila - where do u live now?
21:32:05 PeggyG: Authentic commenting is one of the challenges of VT and I think we're all still learning how to develop and encourage that.
21:32:05 sheila: @Karen - in Hampton NH now
21:32:10 mrsdurff: everyone here have sound?
21:32:14 KarenJanowski: yes
21:32:18 fuzzhead: @mrsduff yes
21:32:22 derrallg: yes
21:32:39 SusanEttenheim: ahh thre's the answer from Ben - you have to be invited to comment in ed.voicethread
21:32:43 PeggyG: I have ed. voicethread but I can't access everyone's. Maybe someone else knows how.
21:32:45 KarenJanowski: @fuzzhead - not used in Reading - I consult to school districts and teach special ed Simmons
21:32:48 shaun fletcher: VT would be great for Second Language classes , good for assessing too
21:33:19 PeggyG: Oh-you have to be invited to the thread to comment. But do you have to be invited to just view it?
21:33:27 maureen/bcdtech: VT is favorite for all teachers I introduce web 2.0 tools to.
21:33:41 mrsdurff: so it is an artificial community
21:33:57 shaun fletcher: I got alot of random/real comments from parents, other students and international audience
21:34:09 fuzzhead: @all, does anyone here know of PAEC, and Sunshine math superstars program?
21:34:10 FeliciaG: teachers in New York WP have gotten very excited by VoiceThreads. A few are beginning to experiment.
21:34:15 PeggyG: The features of ed.voicethread were created specifically to provide that walled garden for schools.
21:36:06 PeggyG: This is a very helpful discussion on VT!
21:36:34 matt montagne: I'm not sure what our ed.VT URL is, try this: http://ed.voicethread.com/?#u13272
21:37:09 PeggyG: Talk more about how you are encouraging more authentic reflective comments from students and teachers.
21:37:26 fuzzhead: ttt.ed.voicethread.com
21:37:47 matt montagne: I'm not sure ed.VT is for us...the lcak of spontaneous, authentic commenting probably makes it something we wont' use
21:38:33 matt montagne: but I know for some the safety issues make ed.VT quite desirable
21:38:42 shaun fletcher: do kids have their own accounts with their own passwords or do they share the account with an entire class and use different identities?
21:38:48 PeggyG: I think people have to be trained how to provide good comments
21:38:50 paulallison: Matt I want to get some of those questions about commenting out.
21:39:11 matt montagne: sure paul
21:39:18 mrsdurff: i have my 3rd-5th use my account
21:39:23 matt montagne: I'll be quiet...
21:39:32 mrsdurff: promises
21:39:33 matt montagne: :)
21:40:17 PeggyG: Can the Jing be captured as video? If so that video can up uploaded to VT
21:40:43 SusanEttenheim: ah peggy - yes that's the question!
21:41:00 Feliciag: My computer just doesn't want to work tonight. If I don't hear anything soon I'm just going to sign off
21:41:00 SusanEttenheim: hi bgwebb welcome!
21:41:08 PeggyG: That is the critical point--presentation vs conversation on VT. Lots of them are really reporting and presentations
21:41:26 SusanEttenheim: are you using it peggy?
21:41:45 PeggyG: Yes in small ways with tech educators because I don't have a class of students
21:42:09 SusanEttenheim: have they turned it into conversations peggy?
21:42:29 PeggyG: I have viewed lots of them and have created a few but none of them are really good examples of good conversations
21:43:08 maureen/bcdtech: up til the ed voice- seemed too dangerous to allow comments
21:43:32 derrallg: I think maybe comments aren't so natural because commenting on blogs is natural but on multi-media is not
21:43:44 shaun fletcher: i have found it difficult to get the kids back to their threads to view comments as we have moved onto other things and comments come in a t random times
21:43:45 Feliciag: Having good conversations via Voicethreads isn't easy. I've viewed a few and didn't know what to say.
21:44:20 SusanEttenheim: good point felicia!
21:44:37 PeggyG: @Feliciag I think that's the challenge. They tend to just be responses-agree, like it, good point, etc.
21:44:46 shaun fletcher: I'd like to be able to change the order of the comments by dragging them around
21:45:07 SusanEttenheim: that's interesting shaun...why?
21:45:22 maureen/bcdtech: @ shaun- me too- that would be helpful
21:45:33 mrsdurff: it would seem Voicethread is bolting down the thumbscrews to squash conversations - a major reason for using at all - guess i'll look elsewhere
21:45:48 PeggyG: I think that's a great suggestion--I'm doing this research project and would like your thoughts about it. Open ended questions would invite more open ended responses.
21:45:50 shaun fletcher: So that a comment to a comment can be placed in a logical place and not tagged onto the end of the conversation
21:46:15 matt montagne: we used the VT network with 7th and 8th graders and left them totally open...we never received one nefarious comment, ever
21:46:23 maureen/bcdtech: @durff- don't you think the walled garden approach is helpful when you are trying to convince teachers/parents that it is "safe"
21:46:33 mrsdurff: nope
21:46:37 shaun fletcher: i moderated my comments through the rss option
21:46:45 SusanEttenheim: that's why there is ed.voicethread
21:46:46 PeggyG: @shaun fletcher--That would be a wonderful feature to be able to organize the comments--guess it's just the particular slides that you can organize
21:46:52 matt montagne: but bad stuff can happen even in the ed.VT network...
21:47:06 mrsdurff: kids go home....
21:47:34 matt montagne: our little 5th grade eyes so a ed.VT project on pregnancy...and it was pretty explicit. I believe it was created by high school students
21:47:48 matt montagne: ooops...so should've been saw
21:48:02 SusanEttenheim: but why would people expect that if the voice threads were interesting and purposeful? Isn't that sort of like assuming that every student is going to trip every other student at lunch everyday?
21:48:04 PeggyG: Maybe you could ask each student to post their comment/thought and then add a question that invites another response.
21:48:26 PeggyG: That way each comment would end with a question
21:48:54 maureen/bcdtech: @durff- not disagreeing in principle- I try to let kids learn about what is out there while in class- but one of the things that teachers and admin seem to pinpoint is the openess of the comment system and it would reassure them.
21:49:12 matt montagne: I"m not so certain I understand "Walled gardens." Are walled gardens totally safe??
21:49:26 SusanEttenheim: matt - limited access
21:49:31 matt montagne: I would agree Paul...
21:49:47 SusanEttenheim: hi cbrannon welcome!
21:49:58 PeggyG: Walled gardens aren't totally safe but they are important to administrators for getting started with web 2 tools
21:49:59 matt montagne: I think the things we did this year were more powerpointish...
21:50:36 matt montagne: @PeggyG...I agree...that is a good point.
21:51:04 PeggyG: @matt montagne-That's probably a good way to get started. You have to become familiar with the tool and the technology before you can really use it in more interactive, collaborative ways.
21:51:30 maureen/bcdtech: @ matt Yeah- most of my stuff with the kids were really just a dif way to present info, not conversations
21:51:33 SusanEttenheim: but sometimes a tool is for the purpose of collaboration
21:51:49 matt montagne: @PeggyG...the ed.VT sign in system is really long...and it was hard for our kids to remember...
21:52:03 Ben: good point
21:52:05 matt montagne: I'm guessing they'll work on the sign in scheme
21:52:10 SusanEttenheim: matt I have the same challenge
21:52:10 Ben: we will
21:52:34 SusanEttenheim: I'm thinking of putting link on the school site to encourage them to click in
21:52:40 mrsdurff: stupid qt - do we all have ed.voicethreads?
21:52:44 Ben: right
21:52:49 sheila: no
21:52:59 matt montagne: our logins go like this.... [email protected]
21:53:05 maureen/bcdtech: @durff- just k-12 right now for me- can't decide and have little $
21:53:09 Feliciag: A teacher I worked with wanted to have kids post pictures about/from the Industrial Rev. as a Global hisotry review and pose questions that others would answer
21:53:10 PeggyG: Say more Susan about the tool being the purpose of collaboration-I know that is the value of VT but you can use it without really being interactive.
21:53:15 matt montagne: like one of my little 5th graders said..."Thats a mouthful!"
21:53:42 SusanEttenheim: our students on their own still go to voicethread and make themselves a free account instead of typing in erhsnyc.ed.voicethread.com
21:53:53 sheila: Used the k-12 account to connect my students and students in Belize.
21:53:56 PeggyG: @matt-yes, that is a long URL. Can you make it an icon/link on their desktop?
21:54:33 SusanEttenheim: true peggy but arent
21:54:35 maureen/bcdtech: Didn't know about the long sign in.. my kids have trouble with ctrl-alt -delete and then a 7 character pswrd
21:54:50 matt montagne: http://middleschoolblog.blogspot.com/2008/05/student-hall-of-fame.html
21:54:52 SusanEttenheim: oops but aren't we just recreating the worst of power point then?
21:55:19 matt montagne: @peggy...that is actually the "email" address that each student needs to use to login...they're all unique of course
21:55:26 cbrannon: the worst of powerpoint is still better than the best of a chalkboard.
21:55:31 PeggyG: probably unless you can find a way to get more meaningful comments
21:55:49 SusanEttenheim: actually I'm not so sure cbrannon if they aren't really the same?
21:55:50 matt montagne: that is a link to our student's ed.VT project about his bridge...in both english and spanish
21:56:14 PeggyG: Yes, keep going. This is really informative!
21:56:26 SusanEttenheim: matt we're ok with the email sign in but it's getting them to our url that is an issue - is that true for you too?
21:57:09 cbrannon: some of the same stuff. but, hard to put a giant colored graph and pics on a chalk board
21:57:12 SusanEttenheim: look at Joyce Valenza's reform power point movement - I'm fascinated by it
21:57:14 Ben: as far as the login goes on ed.voicethread, you can customize the url to anything u want when you create the class or school.
21:57:15 PeggyG: That's funny! finite space of youth voice--both good and bad :-)
21:57:26 matt montagne: susan...I just send the students to ed.voicethread.com
21:57:35 Feliciag: maybe it needs to be structured around a purpose and a sense of community. Why would you want to comment to someone's VoiceThread to say anything beyond "great pictures" It's an added consideration for the author to consider what kind of reponse you want from the reader
21:57:36 cbrannon: I'm just learing about VT. my system is not with it yet
21:57:38 matt montagne: and then they sign in
21:57:47 paulallison: http://friendfeed.com/rooms/ttt
21:58:51 shaun fletcher: @susan motivation and engagement cannot be ignored in the equation
21:59:10 SusanEttenheim: absolutely shaun!
21:59:25 chris sloan: what's the friends feed URL again?
21:59:34 PeggyG: Why not use Diigo?
21:59:45 derrallg: http://friendfeed.com/rooms/ttt
21:59:48 SusanEttenheim: matt - they can signin with their emails simply at ed.voicethread and you don't need your specific url?
22:00:23 PeggyG: Diigo can do all of the things you're describing and you can mark things as private. You can create your own groups and lists.
22:01:17 SusanEttenheim: lol peggy - you just started something big!
22:01:24 matt montagne: @susan...yep, that is it...but it isn't actually their email...it is the [email protected] thing
22:01:33 PeggyG: I'll be back :-)
22:01:34 matt montagne: @susan...we can talk during post show
22:02:11 SusanEttenheim: sounds good
22:02:13 matt montagne: @susan...I can't seem to figure out our school's ed.VT URL...
22:02:20 PeggyG: Tee hee! I'm not usually the one who raises waves :-)
22:03:00 PeggyG: I'm just discovering all of the benefits of Diigo and learn new things every day.
22:03:43 matt montagne: that is a cool idea susan
22:03:52 PeggyG: how to make voicethreads for different purposes and examples. That would be great.
22:04:15 matt montagne: but parents would need to be invited to the ed.VT project...that could be a cluster
22:04:43 Feliciag: Like Susan's idea, about communicating w/ parents
22:04:53 SusanEttenheim: hi bill welcome!
22:04:54 PeggyG: If we could build a repertoire of VTs that model good interactive conversations that would be fantastic!

22:07:22 maureen/bcdtech: I would like to use VT with student mentors- I think they would work well for both mentor and their student partner
