alicebarr (SEEDlings) ->  Hi Peggy: Do you know how to Ustream? WE cannot connect to the server
 PeggyG ->  everyone has had the same problem. I have never done the ustream streaming before. Sorry
 alicebarr (SEEDlings) ->  No problem
 alicebarr (SEEDlings) ->  Looks like we're going to have to learn....
 PeggyG ->  I plan to learn very soon though because I want to be available as a backup streamer
 PeggyG ->  Lorna did it for TTT last night
 PeggyG ->  Lorna says shes getting set up now :-) woo hoo!

 PeggyG ->  http://www.educause.edu/Resources/2011HorizonReport/223122 If anyone needs/wants to download the Horizon Report it is available here

 cheryloakes~seedlings ->  good evening, we are having sound difficulties for now, and we will be in ustream soon
 carolteach4 ->  I can't seem to connect to the Ed Tech Talk A stream - tried both the speaker icon and real player icon -neither would connect.
 PeggyG ->  I've got my Horizon Report ready to follow along :-)
 PeggyG ->  neither are working Carolyn
 cheryloakes~seedlings ->  yes Peggy,
 carolteach4 ->  Oh - thanks, Cheryl
 PeggyG ->  in a minute or two you can click on play on ustream :-)
 cheryloakes~seedlings ->  We have a guardian angel helping out
 PeggyG ->  we sure do!!!
 cheryloakes~seedlings ->  You should be able to pick up the ustream
 PeggyG ->  audio is great!!!
 carolteach4 ->  I can hear you!
 PeggyG ->  I love ustream because there's no lag in the audio
 cheryloakes~seedlings ->  that is great!!
 carolteach4 ->  Hi, everyone - long time no hear! Missed you guys!
 PeggyG ->  got your email Carolyn and I love your text-to-speech message! I'm working on an email response!
 bobsprankle ->  hello all!
 PeggyG ->  Hi Bob, Cheryl and Alice!
 carolteach4 ->  Oh, Peggy. I am so glad. I thought that advertisement I made for your show was decent.
 carolteach4 ->  I loved Karen Janowski.
 PeggyG ->  it's more than decent! it's awesome!
 PeggyG ->  I'm trying to figure out a way to share it
 PeggyG ->  Karen Jan was a fantastic guest!
 carolteach4 ->  Thanks:D :D
 PeggyG ->  three cheers for Lorna!!
 carolteach4 ->  Thanks, Lorna!
 PeggyG ->  Karen Jan was a special guest on our Classroom 2.0 LIVE show a couple of weeks ago
 cheryloakes~seedlings ->  Oh, yes I saw that when I was skiing
 PeggyG ->  http://live.classroom20.com/1/category/karenjanowski/1.html
 PeggyG ->  http://www.educause.edu/Resources/2011HorizonReport/223122
 bobsprankle ->  http://www.nmc.org/publications/2011-horizon-report%20
 PeggyG ->  you can download the report as PDF from that link
 PeggyG ->  there was an outstanding ISTE webinar this week on ipad and apps!
 carolteach4 ->  I saw the movie of the new features of the iPad - looks awesome! So glad I waited to buy one.
 alicebarr (SEEDlings) ->  Me too... And i love the new cover
 PeggyG ->  me to Carolyn! I've also heard that the ipad3 may be out in August so I'm not in a big hurry!
 carolteach4 ->  Oh, really! I'm not sure I can wait.
 alicebarr (SEEDlings) ->  Really iPad 3 in August??? Wow
 PeggyG ->  I just bought a new macbookpro right before their new one came out--one month before and I wish I had known...
 carolteach4 ->  However, David Andrade, physics teacher from Bridgeport, CT says he's holding out for HP touch pad.
 carolteach4 ->  We were just discussing this issue at our district technology meeting this afternoon.
 cheryloakes~seedlings ->  this will be great for our chat, all the variety of mobile devices
 PeggyG ->  I'm very excited that I get to go to the Mobile Learning Conference in Phoenix in April!!!!!
 cheryloakes~seedlings ->  The horizon report give credence to what we are thinking.
 alicebarr (SEEDlings) ->  Peggy! Lucky you!
 PeggyG ->  I know!!!!
 carolteach4 ->  A teacher in our sister middle school, Meghan Wilson, goes by iPodsibilities, got accepted as an Apple Distinguished Educator and made the cut for some really big deal conference - maybe the  one you mentioned, Peggy. We are all excited for her.
 PeggyG ->  The Horizon Report provides some incredible support for tech advocacy
 carolteach4 ->  With such support for tech advocacy, it's a shame we are still fighting budget cuts from the feds.
 alicebarr (SEEDlings) ->  Yes carolteach you are so right abiut budgets
 PeggyG ->  yes Carolyn!! Meg Wilson is a presenter at the conference :-)
 carolteach4 ->  We were discussing our policy that allowed iPod touch but banns cellphones, and how so many kids have the iPod touch embedded in the iPhone - so what are we to do? I think we have to allow kids to bring their own technology since we don't have a one on one laptop program.
 alicebarr (SEEDlings) ->  Does anyone give out kindles or Nooks in the library?
 PeggyG ->  ipad is winning for ebook readers too :-) people seem to prefer it over Nook and Kindle but much more expensive because it does so much more
 carolteach4 ->  @Peggy - Meg loaned me an iPad for a couple of weekends - it is a really amazing tool, but now it comes with camera - garage band , etc. it's much more appealing.
 PeggyG ->  Kevin Kelly is doing an interview with Steve Hargadon on Future of Ed next Monday-March 7 at 8:00pm EST
 carolteach4 ->  @Alice - we only have a couple of Kindles in our media center, but our media specialist has loaned it out to students as well as teachers.
 cheryloakes~seedlings ->  thanks Peggy, wow he gets great guests, as do yo!
 PeggyG ->  yes the camera is the big new feature on the ipad :-)
 alicebarr (SEEDlings) ->  We are trying to figure out is we should get them for the library
 PeggyG ->  I still have my Kindle first version and love it
 PeggyG ->  that point about collaboration is really important!
 carolteach4 ->  I just listened to a recorded video with David Rose - CAST - on www.scholastic.com/teachertalks -he is amazing, and I highly recommend that everyone listen to his take on the role of technology and teachers as "expert learners".
 alicebarr (SEEDlings) ->  Business expect their worker to collaborate
 alicebarr (SEEDlings) ->  Cool jobs for everyone even if you are not on the field trip
 PeggyG ->  yes!
 carolteach4 ->  We are working on two different projects using Google sites with kids collaborating between our two domains - Bethany and Orange middle schools. We stillstruggle with kids putting in less than thoughful commentary -even though they've been cautioned to be school appropriate and use the tool only for the school project - not for socialization about parties, etc.
 cheryloakes~seedlings ->  Kevin Kelley  What technology wants.
 PeggyG ->  http://wiki.nsdl.org/index.php/MSP:MiddleSchoolPortal/Webinar_Archive#iP... this provides a link to the recording for the ipad webinar this week. It wasn't ISTE but the Middle School Portal. It was excellent!
 alicebarr (SEEDlings) ->  So what does it mean when there's so much negativity around technology use?
 carolteach4 ->  We do think the good out weighs the negative.
 PeggyG ->  teachers don't feel they have time to learn it all...
 carolteach4 ->  It's a learning tool!
 cheryloakes~seedlings ->  yes carol that is right
 PeggyG ->  one of the listservs I am on had an exchange this week about cell phones at school and many of them felt teachers should not be using them in school except for emergencies
 connect2jamie ->  Hi all! I'm late, but I made it!
 PeggyG ->  I think they've seen too many teachers abusing them and using them inappropriately rather than modeling effective use and actually incorporating it into their instruction
 cheryloakes~seedlings ->  hello connect2jamie, and all chat room participants
 carolteach4 ->  And I heard the app only costs like $5.00
 alicebarr (SEEDlings) ->  I worry about that Peggy.
 PeggyG ->  Hi connect2jamie! so glad you could make it
 connect2jamie ->  Hi @PeggyG
 PeggyG ->  it all requires education :-)
 PeggyG ->  that's a great point! mobiles need very little IT support :-)
 carolteach4 ->  According to David Rose, we teachers must change our role - use computers to do the scripted tasks - use computers to individualize - while we model being "expert learners" who are helping our students to become "expert learners."
 PeggyG ->  that's the argument that is used in schools too--securing the network with personal computers/phones, etc
 connect2jamie ->  So frustrating--in our dist, our CTO emailed us all saying that iPads are an "administrative productivity tool" only, and that no one other than admin would be allowed to use them. Nice. ...sigh...
 cheryloakes~seedlings ->  jamie, how can that be???
 carolteach4 ->  Our district is pretty forward thinking, thankfully.
 PeggyG ->  I'm smiling @connect2jamie! and who will teach them how to use them as productivity tools???? :-)
 PeggyG ->  great story Cheryl!!
 connect2jamie ->  I have an optimistic streak that makes me hope that they're kind of using admin as a pilot program to see how they work on our network. I'm not sure that's really what will happen though.
 carolteach4 ->  Yes - great! Student as learner and teacher.
 PeggyG ->  it's still progress!
 alicebarr (SEEDlings) ->  @connect2jamie Hope so for you! What kinds of thinsg does admin do?
 cheryloakes~seedlings ->  thanks,
 connect2jamie ->  @Peggy that is SUCH a good idea! My principal chose to get a netbook instead of an iPad b/c she didn't want to try something new. Oh my.
 PeggyG ->  time is flying!!!
 carolteach4 ->  I can't remember where I saw the example, but someone was talking about mobile devices - a kid stuck at his sister's soccer game - not going to lug his books, but if he has a mobile device and can access his homework on it, he'll get it done.
 PeggyG ->  you would be the perfect person to teach/help the admin learn to use it!
 PeggyG ->  excellent example @carolteach4
 connect2jamie ->  I think admin in some bldgs is using their iPads to document info for the walk-throughs that they have to do so many of. They collect data about what tchrs are doing, and then they look at the data as a district.
 alicebarr (SEEDlings) ->  Peggy! You rock good idea!
 carolteach4 ->  I always think about the holo deck in Star Treck - will we ever get there?
 carolteach4 ->  holodeck?
 connect2jamie ->  @PeggyG I totally agree with you! LOL! :D
 PeggyG ->  I believe!!! :-)
 carolteach4 ->  I haven't been into Second Life in a long, long time. I found navigating around very frustrating.
 PeggyG ->  there are so many great supporting links in the Horizon Report for every section!
 carolteach4 ->  Oh - augmented reality - like the ad for Hallmark cards? I really don't understand it.
 PeggyG ->  Scott Merrick has started streaming a monthly librarian webinar from second life into elluminate on LearnCentral. I love it because I can experience it without being embarrassed
 carolteach4 ->  Also, Google Eyes -supposedly will be able to take a picture of a tree or flower, and Google will tell us what it is.
 connect2jamie ->  @carolteach I am glad I'm not the only one. I experimented w SL, but I was so bad at moving around that I haven't been in in a long time. That's my problem though--I need to get in there and "learn something new" like I"m always cajoling my tchrs to do! :\
 PeggyG ->  Adriam Camm was a special guest on the TechTalkTuesday webinar from Australia this week and shared some amazing teaching ideas for augmented reality
 carolteach4 ->  How about holodecks?
 cheryloakes~seedlings ->  The chat is so exciting tonight, I can't keep up.
 connect2jamie ->  @Peggy How did I not know that? I need to go look for it!
 connect2jamie ->  @cheryl I know! I love Seedlings night!
 carolteach4 ->  Did anyone see the Hallmark ad? The child does something with the card, and sees herself on the computer - or something like that?
 PeggyG ->  :-)
 connect2jamie ->  @carol I saw the one about recordable books--Grandparents reading a book to the kids
 carolteach4 ->  @connect2jamie - yes, but this was different - I think it was augmented reality, but I don't really have a handle on it.
 PeggyG ->  you would understand it better if you listened to Adrian Camm :-)
 carolteach4 ->  Our math CMT (Connecticut Mastery Test) tutor uses Study Island with his kids to help them learn math, and they love it.
 connect2jamie ->  I'm going to go thru the Horizon Report this weekend. interesting stuff! I like to look back at past ones and see how they look!
 carolteach4 ->  @Peggy - I'll have to research it further. I don't use my iPhone nearly enough.
 connect2jamie ->  Awww...I'm going to havc to run, although I HATE to. My sweet hubby made dinner though, b/c I worked late. So I'd better go eat it. Night all! I'll catch the podcast. Need to organize my Thursday afternoons better...
 PeggyG ->  http://www.learncentral.org/node/141443 this is the link to the recording with Adrian Camm
 cheryloakes~seedlings ->  night jamie
 carolteach4 ->  Has anyone heard of "powder toy"? The kids in my computer club can't get enough of it.
 PeggyG ->  yes you absolutely need to eat your dinner!
 cheryloakes~seedlings ->  i have not carol,
 alicebarr (SEEDlings) ->  What's powder toy?
 carolteach4 ->  @Peggy - thanks - will look at it after the webcast
 PeggyG ->  they have had some great conversations on Teachers Teaching Teachers about gaming in education
 cheryloakes~seedlings ->  past horizon reports are available and very close in their visions to what is happening today
 carolteach4 ->  @alice - It's a kind of game where the kids mix different elements and then see what happens in a closed container - blow things up - makes awesome patterns -play with lots of variables
 alicebarr (SEEDlings) ->  Sounds fun!
 cheryloakes~seedlings ->  oh, that sounds very fun and experiemental
 PeggyG ->  they had Suzie Boss and others on their show last night talking about social entreprenaurship and many of those opportunities are also available via games
 carolteach4 ->  Has anyone else used Study Island?
 cheryloakes~seedlings ->  Carol, our middle school uses it
 carolteach4 ->  I had kids playing arcademincs - and they liked it.
 carolteach4 ->  @cheryl - great!
 carolteach4 ->  arcademics - it builds math fluency.
 cheryloakes~seedlings ->  fluency for math and reading and very important, it is practice in disguise
 carolteach4 ->  I really don't play games, so I'm kind of challenged in understanding them, but my son (now 28) and an aspiring teacher is a great gamer.
 PeggyG ->  have you heard of EVoke? that is an incredible game that provides real social, environmental issues to work with and solve problems. http://edtechtalk.com/node/4732
 alicebarr (SEEDlings) ->  Thomas Cooper is using EVoke in his classes
 cheryloakes~seedlings ->  thanks Peggy, I have not heard of it, what grade level?
 PeggyG ->  I'm the same way Carolyn!! but the kids are so good at it
 PeggyG ->  mainly used in HS
 PeggyG ->  http://www.urgentevoke.com/
 carolteach4 ->  I have tried to get my computer club kid involved in Scratch, but they don't want to take the time - rather play the already constructed games. Sad.
 PeggyG ->  they had the creator of Urgent Evoke on Teachers Teaching Teachers last year and it was so impressive
 PeggyG ->  that is sad Carolyn
 carolteach4 ->  @Peggy - I heard that show - or those shows!
 PeggyG ->  :-)
 PeggyG ->  Alice is Thomas still creating expedition lit trips? I'd love to have you and him come on Classroom 2.0 LIVE!!
 PeggyG ->  gesture-based computing gets you off the couch :-)
 alicebarr (SEEDlings) ->  Peggy, he is now relly immersed in programming. He has done some work with Jerome
 carolteach4 ->  What is the gaming system where you are the controller?
 alicebarr (SEEDlings) ->  I can ask him if you would like...
 PeggyG ->  I would LOVE it!
 alicebarr (SEEDlings) ->  OK! Will do
 PeggyG ->  thank you so much!
 carolteach4 ->  I really love the touch screen on my iPhone -
 alicebarr (SEEDlings) ->  What's teh best way to get in touch with you?
 PeggyG ->  [email protected]
 alicebarr (SEEDlings) ->  Thanks
 PeggyG ->  do you think of wii as a computer?
 carolteach4 ->  @Bob - that happened to me! My media specialist loaned me the Kindle to read our next selection "The Room" , and instead of clicking the buttons, I kept trying to swipe the screen. It took a bit of time to make the transition.
 PeggyG ->  funny!
 PeggyG ->  I do too but I don't think the kids do :-)
 carolteach4 ->  The wii is not as popular as other systems - kids don't like the games.
 PeggyG ->  doesn't do enough to catch on for the classroom
 PeggyG ->  so funny Bob!
 carolteach4 ->  Again -please - what is the gaming system where your gestures move the game?
 carolteach4 ->  It's a different platform from the wii.
 cheryloakes~seedlings ->  http://www.xbox.com/en-US/Kinect/healthyfun
 PeggyG ->  you don't mean garageband do you?
 PeggyG ->  could you make that point again Bob?
 carolteach4 ->  Oh, my son had Guitar Hero - that was one game I loved, but he never uses it- even after buying the drums and two guitars. Sigh!
 cheryloakes~seedlings ->  Peggy, Guitar Hero and Rock Band are the two games for xbox and wii
 PeggyG ->  my daughter, hubbie and 2 boys love RockBand and use it as a family to create and play music all the time
 PeggyG ->  thanks! I thought I heard garageband and that didn't make sense to me
 carolteach4 ->  @cheryl - Yup! I think it's the xbox, indeed. As I said, I'm challenged when it comes to gaming.
 PeggyG ->  you're playing with my mind!
 alicebarr (SEEDlings) ->  I am AWFUL at games
 carolteach4 ->  Guitar Hero was fun while it lasted! I have videos of my grown sons and their friends playing the game. Too bad it didn't last.
 PeggyG ->  absolutely! Kevin is amazing with his approach to learning to play the guitar by starting with an ipad or iphone
 carolteach4 ->  @Bob - what is that app on your iPhone?
 carolteach4 ->  It's not where you have to have the special nike sneaker,is it?
 cheryloakes~seedlings ->  Nike plus
 alicebarr (SEEDlings) ->  Run Keeper is free (or lite version is)
 carolteach4 ->  Oh - do you have to buy special sneakers with something in them?
 carolteach4 ->  Oh, that's great. I'll have to buy it. I need motivation - walking though, not running.
 PeggyG ->  there is way too much to talk about in the Horizon Report for one show! You need to continue this conversation :-)
 connect2jamie ->  The dogs!
 alicebarr (SEEDlings) ->  :)
 cheryloakes~seedlings ->  Thanks Peggy, we will re-surface with this when the K-12 Horizon Report comes out
 carolteach4 ->  I hear your dogs, Alice. Sounds like they are saying, "Enough, already, Mom. We want to go out."
 PeggyG ->  the dogs are saying-time's up
 carolteach4 ->  It's as if the dogs have an internal timer.
 PeggyG ->  that's a great plan Cheryl!
 alicebarr (SEEDlings) ->  I think you are right...
 alicebarr (SEEDlings) ->  They do.. it's weird!
 cheryloakes~seedlings ->  http://horizon.wiki.nmc.org/2011+Report+Participation       This link is the Horizon wiki where everyone can participate
 PeggyG ->  so sorry everyone but I have to go--dinner date/meeting tonight :-) Thanks for a great conversation!
 carolteach4 ->  I have a pedometer from Omron that works really well, but I like the idea of using my iPhone,
 connect2jamie ->  Have a good dinner @Peggy!
 PeggyG ->  thanks!
 bobsprankle ->  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/adora-svitak/changes-schools-should-ma_b_8...
 cheryloakes~seedlings ->  http://museumbox.e2bn.org/index.php
 carolteach4 ->  I read that! It was interesting to see her response to the commenter who suggested that she'd had adult help in crafting her article.
 alicebarr (SEEDlings) ->  http://www.bookdrum.com/
 carolteach4 ->  and editing her article.
 alicebarr (SEEDlings) ->  http://soundcloud.com/
 carolteach4 ->  Can I add a link?
 cheryloakes~seedlings ->  please do
 bobsprankle ->  yes carol!
 carolteach4 ->  It's to an online text-to-speech tool - and the link is to an advertisement I made for Classroom 2.0
 carolteach4 ->  http://tts.imtranslator.net/EkK5
 lorna ->  yw
 cheryloakes~seedlings ->  yes, yes
 carolteach4 ->  I'd love feedback - when you listen to it.
 carolteach4 ->  Good night all my Maine friends. I hope to get to visit with all of you face to face someday.
 carolteach4 ->  I live in CT but Maine is still "home!"
 lorna ->  good night everyone
 cheryloakes~seedlings ->  Maine loves you too!!!
 connect2jamie ->  Oh me too @carolteach! I'd love to meet all my Maine friends! Good night all!@
 cheryloakes~seedlings ->  thanks connect2jamie! thanks to all our folks in the chat room!
 connect2jamie ->  When I'm at a webinar, my hubby always says "are those your Maine tweeps?"
 carolteach4 ->  Oh, I hear that livescribe pen is an awesome tool.
 alicebarr (SEEDlings) ->  Ha funny Jamie! Thanks for coming
 carolteach4 ->  @Bob - did you hear the advert?
 connect2jamie ->  Night all!
 nancyvonw ->  thank you, glad to hear you live, lurking silently as it's middle of night here :)
