We met Travis at a gaming workshop at the National Writing Project’s annual meeting in November and at a NWP Maker workshop .

We met Travis at a gaming workshop at the National Writing Project’s annual meeting in November and at a NWP Maker workshop .
Here’s what Travis says about his school and his work there:
The charter is in its fifth year of operation. The charter's mission is to create environments that allow the students to explore and discover their strengths and weaknesses in their educational development. We have an emphasis on the implementation of technology. I am a co-founder of the charter and my role was and is the implementation of some of the theories on education put forth by Gardner, Glasser, Dewy, Maslow & Payne ... I serve a low SES population of 24 students ranging in grades from 9th -12th. Each student has a laptop with internet access along with ipad touches on loan form CATE, center for advanced technology in education, out of the University of Oregon.
The class has done some short videos on our ning.
The ning showcases some of their individual and group projects. In "Problems have Solutions" the students learned what it takes to solve the Cube and then construct a machine to solve the cube. Another project is "Solar Hydrogen" part II.
My goal is to get the students to realize the potential. Be able to read, write, think abstractly (mathematics), apply the scientific method, and communicate effectively at a college level by the time they leave the charter. In tandem, develop a four year plan post high school (two-year, four-year college, vocational, ...) with clear objectives with feedback on accomplishing those steps....

21:10:41 Chris Sloan: I've got one student who's pretty much bilingual and very much wants to converse in Spanish. He's an excellent speaker and writer of English. His Spanish is pretty good too

21:23:56 Camilla Elliott: @Susan - my role is Head of Library and eLearning Coordinator. I work closely with teachers introducing ideas and supporting. The Qld Dept of Educ has a huge statewide learning platform. I'm in touch with the President of International Assoc of School Libraries so I was planning to speak to her about looking at the concept as a mean of teacher-librarians supporting students but enabling them to express experiences and emotions.
21:24:25 rachael: I think the students need to have that outlet and many students from our southern states could provide support. I heard yesterday the area effected by cyclone Katrina is 250000square miles Queensland disaster area is 1000000 square miles
21:26:36 rachael: I have a 13 year old of my own who was making things on her computer yesterday in reflection of this disaster. an we don't have any family or friends directly involved.I think this is a reflection of all students needing to have somewhere to post thoughts and support

21:27:23 Chris Sloan: Rachael, very important process you daughter is doing. It sounds like some of the processing that the Gulf students are doing
21:28:09 Chris Sloan: It's natural to try to express those thoughts via some media
21:28:19 Camilla Elliott: One hour a day 'tinker time'. What a good idea.
21:28:56 SusanEttenheim: I wonder how you keep it moving ahead or how you deal with the person who isn't into it that day....
21:29:12 rachael: I would like to take some of these ideas to school when the students go back and support teachers to participate.
21:29:38 SusanEttenheim: rachael what ages will you be working with?
21:30:43 rachael: I dont have work yet If im not working at teh hospital I will volunteer to work with and junior or middle school grades willing to listen
21:31:19 SusanEttenheim: I think volunteering is often a door into a place..

21:32:29 Camilla Elliott: I know what you're saying Susan. Sometimes these projects are better not mandatory for the whole class.

21:33:41 Camilla Elliott: I was interested to read about the role of charter schools in 'Disrupting Class' by Christensen.
21:34:03 Chris Sloan: I read Disrupting Class too.
21:34:38 Chris Sloan: If I recall, he talks about using them as laboratories so that mainstream schools can apply those lessons for all kids
21:35:27 Camilla Elliott: Yes. He talks about these schools and the church schools as having more flexibility than some in the public system.
21:36:00 Chris Sloan: And that's true. I'm in a private school and have a lot of flexibility.
21:36:20 Chris Sloan: Some of the charter schools around me don't seem to have the laboratory school philosophy though
21:36:41 SusanEttenheim: yes - great book!
21:36:44 rachael: I agree that just because the student is a cretain age they should be progressed into the next grade level. lets make sure all students achieve the learning outcomes, maybe through flexible learning and integrated online and face to face instruction
21:37:33 Camilla Elliott: Yes. I'm in the Catholic system. Australia has 3 educ systems - Government, Catholic and Independent. Independents have more flexibility than either of the other two.
21:37:45 rachael: has anyone thought about using social meda for collaborative learning and learning conversations?
21:38:06 Chris Sloan: yes Rachael, that's what Youth Voices is all about
21:38:57 Chris Sloan: My students discuss their digital work with students far away from them.
21:40:15 Chris Sloan: My students use a number of other social media like FaceBook, VoiceThread, etc
21:40:34 Chris Sloan: but whatever the platform, it's about learning conversations
