I'm an assistant professor and I.T. director at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. I host a podcast on d.i.y. podcasting called "Rod's Pulse Podcast". Pulse is our brand for the Blackboard system.
I think that what we have in Queensland, Australia, for all Education Queensland schools works rather well. The Learning Place is a dynamic centre for eLearning that offers schools free communication tools, resources, communities, and on-line learning in a secure, safe environment with some contolled portholes that are viewable on the Internet. I see it as a cocoon within the web.
I teach literacy and numeracy to adults, mainly young, early school-leavers who have been classified as "disengaged learners". Low literacy levels and general skills mean that these people have poor job prospects and need innovative teaching to re-engage them. Furthermore they are doing their studies by distance mode, so the new technologies and exciting developments in social software make excellent resources. Unfortunately the students have access and equity issues because of the inherent expense of communication technologies - but we keep hoping ....
