This podcast is another in a series of Teachers Teaching Teachers shows to feature the authors of a recent outcrop of books on new media and literacy (Copyright Clarity: 184, 135, The Digital Writing Workshop: 172, 171, 170, Teaching the New Writing: 157156, 155, Teaching Writing Using Blogs, Wikis, and other Digital Tools: 138)  Perhaps we have the makings of a new discipline here, or at least a budding new branch on the tree of academic inquiry. On this episode of Teachers Teaching Teachers we were excited to have a conversation with Liz Stephens and Kerry Ballast about their new book, Using Technology to Improve Adolescent Writing: Digital Make-Overs for Writing Lessons.

Stephens and Ballast guide teachers in how to successfully implement technology for writing across the curriculum and create engaging lesson plans. They outline four frames of writing–inside writing, responsive writing, purposeful writing, and social action writing–and present student-centered and inquiry-based reading/writing lessons to connect real-world writing to content area standards. The result is a state-of the-art resource for helping teachers teach every student to write inside and outside of the classroom.

Liz Campbell Stephens teaches graduate courses in Educational Technology and is Director of the Office of Educator Preparation at Texas State University-San Marcos. She serves on the National Writing Project’s Board of Directors and was Director of the Central Texas Writing Project for 11 years. She co-authored Technology, Reading, and Language Arts and has written numerous chapters and papers on technology and literacy.  Liz is former high school English teacher and brings that experience to her work as a teacher educator, federal programs director, and consultant. Her research has centered on literacy, technology, and teacher education.

Kerry Ballast is a Teacher Consultant for the Central Texas Writing Project and a secondary English language arts teacher with 14 years classroom experience. She has worked with students in grades 6-12 to explore various forms of writing, both traditional and digital. Currently, she works for the Texas Education Agency.

We were also joined by English teacher, Joel Malley who teaches at Cheektowaga Central School District, near Buffalo, NY. Joel is also the Tech Liaison for the Western New York Writing Project at Canisius College. Troy Hicks had a couple of things to say as well. Troy is the director of the Chippewa River Writing Project at Central Michigan University.

21:14:47 Wendy: We have a class blog for a lot of Language Arts writing-mostly response to literature. We have worked on a wiki for poetry writing and sharing as well a one open to anyone for book reviews.
21:15:29 ElyseEA: Thanks, Susan.  Sometimes the resistance is well founded, and working through it can take your thinking to a deeper level than if you didn't have the resistance.
21:15:31 Ilka: I had kids blog while we were watching a video in class.  That was so exciting and the kids' posts were deep and meaningful.

21:16:27 Wendy: @Peggy--the blog has been a great experience. The kids really have thoughtful things to say and it has allowed a wider range of people to be successful.
21:16:29 PeggyG: Scott Snyder did a great presentation on Classroom 2.0 LIVE last Sat. on backchanneling in the classroom and he had lots of great examples of how it helped engage all students in the room

21:16:54 Joel Malley: Sorry Susan.  Safari is being wonky, Chrome wouldn't work, so I had to go back to Firefox.  I teach English 10, AP Lit, and Mass Media/Film Production outside of Buffalo NY
21:16:58 jenny: This was unfortunate but meaningful - we had an administrator unexpectedly pass away in November.  I added a tribute page and the students really contributed some heartfelt words.
21:17:10 Wendy: I also had the experience of more writing when blogging and more thoughtful--that public aspect is powerful.
21:17:35 PeggyG: @jenny--that's a perfect example of authentic writing!! very powerful!
21:18:01 Ilka: They had to post three times each over the two days we watched.  The comment had to be appropriate and related to the content.  They were allowed to pose a question, make a comment, or comment to another student's comment/question.  I have six classes.  My IEP class (24 students/11 with IEPs) posted 235 comments.  They are fantastic.

21:18:44 ElyseEA: I think the more public nature of the writing also contributes a sense that writing is more important, more part of the 'environment' because of the way it can be references and brought into conversations that go beyond the classroom.

21:20:38 Ilka: The best part was seeing the students post in the evening, outside of class, without any comments from me.  I was shocked by that.

21:20:51 PeggyG: editing and revising is often resisted by students and with these ideas the students WANT to make them better :-)

21:23:03 Wendy: I think a lot of times you improve writing by improving thinking skills and practicing telling a story and talking about ideas. And if the writing isn't alwasy as essay, that's still writing.

21:23:10 hickstro: That is one question that I have... to what extent are we able to make claims about how students' writing -- all kinds of writing -- improves when they are engaged in digital writing, too.

21:24:05 ElyseEA: this is a significant question -- one I get alllll the time at the NWP.  I think the key is that writing IS now in digital environments.  it's not 'does technology make writing (without technology) better' but rather 'now that we write with/in technology we need to understand what makes THAT writing better.

21:24:08 PeggyG: such an important question @hickstro! for many administrators it isn't enough to improve student motivation for writing--they want to know it actually improves their writing
21:24:17 jenny: I have students who, although in 6th grade, write like my 2nd graders.  They take their writing more seriously when they have an audience

21:35:59 Gail Desler: I think when you add to the storyboards (frames) the requirement that student identify the camera shots & angles, the students start to make some literacy jumps.
21:35:59 Ilka: For struggling students, there is a great cartoon app from Read/Write/Think.  The kids do the writing and the program makes the cartoon.

21:37:42 ElyseEA: One way to think about the frames (theoretical frames) is that the affordances of digital writing support some approaches/mental operations that lead us to approach a writing task in certain ways.  These four are more like four typical 'stances' that we are in when we are writing with tech.

21:38:43 Ilka: Kids are exposed to so much media these days, they often think in sound bytes.
21:38:45 Wendy: I've also used toondoon.com for comic making. It's a "social" site where you can share them.

21:41:58 Ilka: I do a similar thing with my 8th graders.  I teach the various forms of writing and let the students end the year with a digital movie project using their choiceof one of the modes.
