2009-10-04 11:38:42 [Message] DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: ARG. losing my connection
2009-10-04 11:39:01 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: Hi DaveC-hope we don't lose you!
2009-10-04 11:40:10 [Message] Paula Naugle -> -EdTechTalk: Brings back Katrina memories for me. I had a college friend who posted a message online through a locating service to find me after I had evacuated.
2009-10-04 11:40:31 [Message] Paula Naugle -> -EdTechTalk: Oh that is so terrible.
2009-10-04 11:40:40 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: that must have been a very difficult time for you Paula!!
2009-10-04 11:41:11 [Message] Paula Naugle -> -EdTechTalk: Yes, not knowing if my house was safe for nine days was worrisome.
2009-10-04 11:41:43 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: how was your house affected Paula?
2009-10-04 11:41:56 [Message] Paula Naugle -> -EdTechTalk: Used Google Earth and NOLA.com to get info.
2009-10-04 11:42:11 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: great tip!!
2009-10-04 11:42:51 [Message] Paula Naugle -> -EdTechTalk: I had roof damage, no flooding and lots of tree limbs everywhere. Minor stuff in comparison to others who lost their whole house.
2009-10-04 11:43:48 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: @Paula-did you have internet access during all of that?
2009-10-04 11:44:18 [Message] Paula Naugle -> -EdTechTalk: We were told to look for jobs in the area where we had evacuated to in the first email communication from our superintendent.
2009-10-04 11:44:48 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: every part of your life is affected in a disaster like that!! very scary!!
2009-10-04 11:44:55 [Message] Paula Naugle -> -EdTechTalk: Yes, I was in Florida and had internet access.
2009-10-04 11:45:58 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: that's exciting Lisa!! Educon 2.2!!
2009-10-04 11:46:16 [Message] jadams -> -EdTechTalk: for the sake of conversation: have communication tools made it easier to communicate, or harder to not communicate?
2009-10-04 11:46:24 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: I particpated in all of 2.a virtually and it was incredible even though I couldn't be there in person
2009-10-04 11:46:40 [Message] Paula Naugle -> -EdTechTalk: Our superintendedent's second email said we were reopening schools in January and then her 3rd email said we would reopen Oct 18,
2009-10-04 11:46:44 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: Educon 2.1--can't seem to type today!!
2009-10-04 11:47:18 [Message] Paula Naugle -> -EdTechTalk: I heard about Educon 2.1 through Twitter. Sounds like it will be a great conference.
2009-10-04 11:47:22 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: Lisa--a traveling ambassador! how exciting :-)
2009-10-04 11:47:28 [Message] MariaK -> -EdTechTalk: http://educon22.wikispaces.com/
2009-10-04 11:47:45 [Message] Lisa Parisi -> -EdTechTalk: http://www.bucketfillers101.com/page9.html
2009-10-04 11:48:09 [Message] Paula Naugle -> -EdTechTalk: I put in proposals for LaCUE in December.
2009-10-04 11:48:17 [Message] Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: Hoping to be able to go to educon this year.
2009-10-04 11:49:07 [Message] Paula Naugle -> -EdTechTalk: Bucket fillers are such a great idea.
2009-10-04 11:49:40 [Message] Paula Naugle -> -EdTechTalk: How great to have the author visit.
2009-10-04 11:50:17 [Message] Paula Naugle -> -EdTechTalk: My school used to do Responsive Classroom but no longer. I was sad to wee it go.
2009-10-04 11:50:28 [Message] Paula Naugle -> -EdTechTalk: See not wee.
2009-10-04 11:50:31 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: this reminds me a lot of the old story and related activities: "soft warm fuzzies" :-)
2009-10-04 11:50:38 [Message] Lisa Parisi -> -EdTechTalk: Paula, my school doesn't do RC. I do.
2009-10-04 11:50:58 [Message] Paula Naugle -> -EdTechTalk: Warm fuzzies - showing our age Peggy.
2009-10-04 11:51:47 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: I have read the book "How Full is your Bucket" and love it!
2009-10-04 11:52:22 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: I can still sing the song about soft warm fuzzies :-) music is an amazing tool when it comes to memory :-)
2009-10-04 11:53:30 [Message] Paula Naugle -> -EdTechTalk: We are being held so accountable for every instructional minute that I don't have homeroom time except for 3 minutes which is ridiculous.
2009-10-04 11:54:12 [Message] Paula Naugle -> -EdTechTalk: We do Positive Behavior Support schoolwide now.
2009-10-04 11:54:50 [Message] MariaK -> -EdTechTalk: http://strengths.gallup.com/116092/Full-Bucket-Kids.aspx
2009-10-04 11:54:59 [Message] MariaK -> -EdTechTalk: another site about filling buckets
2009-10-04 11:55:01 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: my daughter bought the bucket book for my grandaughter-they love reading it together-she is 6 yrs old
2009-10-04 11:56:08 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: that's the one she bought Maria-I'll have to tell her about the one Lisa mentioned
2009-10-04 11:57:15 [Message] Paula Naugle -> -EdTechTalk: Isn't there a Bucket Filler website?
2009-10-04 11:57:32 [Message] MariaK -> -EdTechTalk: http://www.bucketfillers101.com/home.html
2009-10-04 11:57:34 [Message] jadams -> -EdTechTalk: I teach high school, so this bucket deal might not fly as a social skills curriculum piece for me. One concept I try to teach to combat the cynicism of the high school years is the open door. How many times in a day do you have a chance to hold a door for someone? Can you take the opportunity to smile at them as well? Now you've literally made someone's day easier by opening a door for them and made their day better by smiling at them. Two simple gestures that we all take for granted can be a simple way to "pay forward" some good feelings and make the world better ...
2009-10-04 11:57:35 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: they're all outgrowths from the original author of the adult book by Tom Rath and Donald Clifton
2009-10-04 11:58:45 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: Clifton was the originator of the concept according to the bucketfiller website
2009-10-04 11:59:30 [Message] Paula Naugle -> -EdTechTalk: Bucket Fillers Facebook group http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2205088143
2009-10-04 12:00:47 [Message] jadams -> -EdTechTalk: Thanks for the nice chat, folks. Have a great day!
2009-10-04 12:01:14 [Message] Paula Naugle -> -EdTechTalk: @jadams Those are such easy ways to make the world a better place. I am constantly asking my 4th graders how they can make someone's day better.
2009-10-04 12:02:13 [Message] Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: Hmmm....there's a hole in my bucket....
2009-10-04 12:02:23 [Message] sr -> -EdTechTalk: great for character ed studies
2009-10-04 12:02:36 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: @jadams-your approach sounds great for HS students! reminds me of the approach used by Ron Clark with his essential 55 rules and Excellent 11--all based on manners and respect :-)
2009-10-04 12:03:43 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: I think it's so important to teach kids about the impact of putdowns!
2009-10-04 12:04:44 [Message] Paula Naugle -> -EdTechTalk: http://www.teachingheart.net/BucketFillingActivities2.doc A few bucket filler activities.
2009-10-04 12:04:54 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: does anyone remember the IALAC activity (I am lovable and capable)-wear a piece a paper with IALAC and every time someone gives you a putdown you tear off a piece of your "sign"--very graphic and makes the point
2009-10-04 12:05:21 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: thanks for those links Paula-they are great!
2009-10-04 12:05:25 [Message] Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: The notion of the precocious child- which has been on TV for quite a long time has really influenced how the kids talk.
2009-10-04 12:05:38 [Message] Paula Naugle -> -EdTechTalk: Yes Peggy. I remeber learnig about IALAC at a workshop and crying at the end of the presentation.
2009-10-04 12:06:30 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: it really makes people aware that they are tearing down a person's self esteem when they say hurtful things
2009-10-04 12:06:42 [Message] Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: But the kids used to be portrayed as nice... Wally, the Beav- Eddie was nice to adults. Then it changed to wise guy kids
2009-10-04 12:07:07 [Message] Paula Naugle -> -EdTechTalk: All In the Family - I hated that show because of how they interacted with each other, always putting each other down.
2009-10-04 12:07:25 [Message] Lisa Parisi -> -EdTechTalk: Hello Diana!
2009-10-04 12:07:32 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: sarcasm can be very hurtful because often misunderstood and yet many teachers use it with their students
2009-10-04 12:07:36 [Message] Lisa Parisi -> -EdTechTalk: We talked early about SLA
2009-10-04 12:07:37 [Message] dlaufenberg -> -EdTechTalk: hey there... just popping in for a sec.
2009-10-04 12:07:58 [Message] dlaufenberg -> -EdTechTalk: what were you guys talking about... with SLA?
2009-10-04 12:08:01 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: hi dlaufenberg-you missed hearing Lisa talk about educon2.2 :-)
2009-10-04 12:08:04 [Message] Lisa Parisi -> -EdTechTalk: Educon 2.2.
2009-10-04 12:08:10 [Message] dlaufenberg -> -EdTechTalk: nice
2009-10-04 12:08:16 [Message] Lisa Parisi -> -EdTechTalk: Can't wait to go
2009-10-04 12:08:25 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: @dlaufenberg-are you presenting again this year?
2009-10-04 12:08:36 [Message] dlaufenberg -> -EdTechTalk: we are really excited about the Friday/Sunday panel topics
2009-10-04 12:08:44 [Message] dlaufenberg -> -EdTechTalk: I will present, yes.
2009-10-04 12:08:45 [Message] Lisa Parisi -> -EdTechTalk: I just saw them Diane
2009-10-04 12:09:18 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: I'm very excited to learn more about the conference since I have to participate virtually. Are you going to stream via Mogulus/Livestream this year?
2009-10-04 12:09:28 [Message] Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: Even with good models at home, the kids are trying to push the limits at school. Ihad a 7th grader- who I have had as a kkid, 1-3 science and last year in computer. I know him, his parents and they would not tolerate this type of talk. I pulled him out of class the other day to talk with him about his inappropriate language, attitude. He knows better!
2009-10-04 12:09:37 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: Lisa gave us the link to the conference wikispace
2009-10-04 12:09:46 [Message] dlaufenberg -> -EdTechTalk: @peggyG we are investigating the best tool to use... but it will be streamed
2009-10-04 12:10:16 [Message] Paula Naugle -> -EdTechTalk: I will look forward to attending virtually also.
2009-10-04 12:10:20 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: hooray! I thought it was very successul using Mogulus last year--excellent video/audio quality for me
2009-10-04 12:10:48 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: of course it's always hard to stream interactive workshops because of all of the hands-on and conversation
2009-10-04 12:11:39 [Message] Paula Naugle -> -EdTechTalk: Parenting classes are so desperately needed.
2009-10-04 12:12:04 [Message] MariaK -> -EdTechTalk: paula - thanks for the resources
2009-10-04 12:12:22 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: that child was doing it to get attention Lisa (IMHO)
2009-10-04 12:12:23 [Message] Paula Naugle -> -EdTechTalk: @Maria you are welcome.
2009-10-04 12:12:30 [Message] dlaufenberg -> -EdTechTalk: @PeggyG mogulus is too expensive to really continue with it... we were happy with thequality, but the cost of storage, streaming, bandwidth...
2009-10-04 12:12:37 [Message] Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: I don't think you can change them. But we can model what the expectations are in school. It is pervasive in society now... there aren't the same boundaries there used to be. We had school clothes, play clothes, church clothes and we knew how to act and interact in the different situations. Now we are all "free spirits" and can do whatever makes us happy- clothes, language, etc... Not really responsive to situations.
2009-10-04 12:13:06 [Message] Paula Naugle -> -EdTechTalk: @Maureen How true that is.
2009-10-04 12:13:24 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: those are excellent points Maureen!!
2009-10-04 12:15:10 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: @dlaufenberg-sorry to hear about the expense related to Mogulus! I'm using it a lot on the free version for AzTEA but I only stream one thing at a time. You need to stream lots of things simultaneously
2009-10-04 12:15:25 [Message] Paula Naugle -> -EdTechTalk: If the term Bucket Fillers is not a copyrighted term I guess anyone can write a book about it.
2009-10-04 12:15:45 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: oh--the safety patrols by kids--I love that concept
2009-10-04 12:15:54 [Message] dlaufenberg -> -EdTechTalk: @peggyG we'll figure it out... Marcie Hull is already starting the process of finding the right thing...
2009-10-04 12:16:14 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: does anyone use Peer Mediators in your schools?
2009-10-04 12:16:30 [Message] Paula Naugle -> -EdTechTalk: I was a Safety Patrol in sixth grade many years ago. Getting that white patrol belt was awesome back then.
2009-10-04 12:16:57 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: we used to train peer mediators in our school and the students did a fantastic job of facilitating problems on the playground
2009-10-04 12:17:03 [Message] Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: @Peggy we used to have peer mediators- kids and faculty were trained. It petered out
2009-10-04 12:17:08 [Message] dlaufenberg -> -EdTechTalk: @peggyG we had them when I was in HS... worked well.
2009-10-04 12:17:31 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: peer mediators learn great skills for resolving conflicts that can be used anywhere
2009-10-04 12:17:37 [Message] Paula Naugle -> -EdTechTalk: Like Maureen ours petered out also.
2009-10-04 12:17:54 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: some of our kids told stories about using the skills at home with siblings and parents
2009-10-04 12:18:07 [Message] Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: I'll have to check into this bucket thing- morale is pretty darn low at my school- faculty- not kids
2009-10-04 12:18:35 [Message] dlaufenberg -> -EdTechTalk: sure can
2009-10-04 12:18:41 [Message] dlaufenberg -> -EdTechTalk: laufty on skype
2009-10-04 12:18:45 [Message] MariaK -> -EdTechTalk: http://educon22.wikispaces.com/
2009-10-04 12:18:47 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: that would be great to hear from Diana!
2009-10-04 12:18:56 [Message] Paula Naugle -> -EdTechTalk: We have a Kudos Jar in the faculty louge for teachers to boost each others' morale.
2009-10-04 12:20:12 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: teacher morale is such an important issue--it affects everything in the school and classrooms!
2009-10-04 12:20:49 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: we should do a Conversations show on ways to boost teacher morale :-)
2009-10-04 12:21:04 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: there she is :-) yeah!
2009-10-04 12:21:11 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: no feedback for me
2009-10-04 12:21:14 [Message] Paula Naugle -> -EdTechTalk: @Peggy that would make for an awesome conversation
2009-10-04 12:22:02 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: that was a fantastic panel last year!!
2009-10-04 12:22:36 [Message] Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: @peggy I agree. I don't want or need lots of strokes, but need to feel that my voice is heard and that everyone is treated equilably. Not the case at the moment. 2nd year for new head- honeymoon is over.
2009-10-04 12:22:49 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: http://educon21.wikispaces.com/Recordings you can still view/listen to some of the sessions from last year here
2009-10-04 12:24:13 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: yes Maureen!! morale is about attitude and it needs to be authentic--not just an activity that is contrived to make you "feel good"
2009-10-04 12:24:46 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: Michael Horn is fantastic! that's exciting!
2009-10-04 12:25:51 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: great idea Lisa! there is nothing like meeting some of these enthusiastic learners face to face! it's very contagious!
2009-10-04 12:26:28 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: the Science Leadership Academy is such a fantastic model for all of us!!
2009-10-04 12:27:08 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: I've been reading some of the student blog posts on Youth Voices about the stress of applying for colleges!
2009-10-04 12:28:14 [Message] Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: @peggyg- so glad my kids are now grown and done with college. It is so much harder now than when I was growing up and it seems to get worse every year.
2009-10-04 12:28:29 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: there are many universities that don't rely just on SAT scores and GPAs--very refreshing!!
2009-10-04 12:28:53 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: all of the HS students who are about to graduate seem to be so stressed out!!
2009-10-04 12:29:45 [Message] Paula Naugle -> -EdTechTalk: All students need ePorfoios to show their work. Glad that just test scores aren't driving the admissions procedures.
2009-10-04 12:29:52 [Message] Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: Even 10 years ago my son was taking almost every AP course offered... a bit much. He ended up quitting 4 colleges before eventually going back and getting his degree. It is far too much pressure on kids to build a resume.
2009-10-04 12:29:57 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: me too Maureen!! now it's my grandkids that are struggling with getting into college (and being able to afford it!)
2009-10-04 12:30:37 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: ePortfolios are such a great tool to show what students know/can do/have experienced in their learning!
2009-10-04 12:30:44 [Message] Paula Naugle -> -EdTechTalk: ePortfolios sorry can't type today.
2009-10-04 12:31:10 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: I hear many students looking for schools in warm climates and away from home :-)
2009-10-04 12:31:22 [Message] Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: My son wanted to be an engineer. Got the RPI scholarship, but then visited and decided it wasn't for him. Good decision.
