Post-Show description:
Dean Shareski, Digital Learning Consultant from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada shares his presentation Going Global with hosts Matt Montagne, Lorna Costantini, Cindy Seibel and resident parent CIndy Zuatcke. What was interesting in the discussions is Dean's approach to the subject of children and the internet. He finds it more relevant to emphasize the positive aspects of digital tools, the need for good examples of digital citizenship and not predatprs and safety on the internet. An excellent resource for Principal, administrators,teachers and parentsStreaming difficulties appeared through out the hour webcast. The recording for this show has had numerous edits one of which is the removal of Matt Montagne. Matt's terrific comments and question could not be heard. Dean's message and ideas are still clear. Enjoy listening to the show and his presentation here . You can find Dean Shareski at his blog www.ideasandthoughts.org

2008-10-06 21:29:31 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: I'd really like some suggestions-I've found a few things but so much of the evidence is anecdotal in blogs and wikis.
2008-10-06 21:29:39 [Message] shareski -> -EdTechTalk: @Peggy...here's one....http://news.becta.org.uk/display.cfm?resID=38417

2008-10-06 21:32:20 [Message] cindy seibel -> -EdTechTalk: Another set of resources for kids, parents, teachers: http://www.youthlinkcalgary.com
2008-10-06 21:32:22 [Message] czautcke -> -EdTechTalk: Worst book on Internet and kids: Internet Protect Your Kids by Arterburn and Marsh. Actually makes up predator stories to make their point that the internet is unsafe. ARGHGHGH!

2008-10-06 21:32:37 [Message] penny -> -EdTechTalk: filters frustrate teachers who want to access resources
2008-10-06 21:32:39 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: http://www.wiredsafety.org/wiredlearning/iaf/predators1/
2008-10-06 21:33:03 [Message] penny -> -EdTechTalk: kids may live in a filtered environment at school but what about home
2008-10-06 21:33:14 [Message] penny -> -EdTechTalk: would be great if they learned skills at both places
2008-10-06 21:33:19 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: that link worked for me-it was the link from Becta that didn't work
2008-10-06 21:33:41 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: @penny...I've said that all along...it makes the adults at school feel good to tell everyone that "we keep the kidds safe...we have a filter"
2008-10-06 21:34:02 [Message] penny -> -EdTechTalk: who helps the parents who don't know how to help filter
2008-10-06 21:34:07 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: such important points about filtering--so true!
2008-10-06 21:34:11 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: I have to say that it is really cool to work at a school that doesn't filter
2008-10-06 21:34:45 [Message] penny -> -EdTechTalk: I can't shelter my kids from everything -- I have to give them the skills to fillter themselves
2008-10-06 21:35:12 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: show administrators the link to the article from the American Psychologist...it really dispells the predator issue...
2008-10-06 21:35:46 [Message] cindy seibel -> -EdTechTalk: Google yourself is a great strategy to help people see their digital breadcrumbs
2008-10-06 21:36:20 [Message] DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: http://www.sarahwynne.name/about.php
2008-10-06 21:36:28 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: does that backfire when they google themselves?
2008-10-06 21:38:06 [Message] DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: I am at a school where about 15percent of kids don't have access to a computer outside of school. A parent told me that they didn't want their child in a podcast because someone might find a picture and use photoshop to remove their clothes. That's what the media teaches.
2008-10-06 21:38:13 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: I read a powerful email from a local HS student yesterday where she very articulately requested a specific site be unblocked so she could do her research project. It was so persuasive the IMT director unblocked the site :-)
2008-10-06 21:38:26 [Message] czautcke -> -EdTechTalk: So far my favorite book on kids and the internet: CyberSafe Kids, CyberSavvy Teens: Helping Young People Learn to Use the Internet Safely and Responsibly by Nancy E. Willard.
2008-10-06 21:38:49 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: it was interesting to hear folks talk about cyber bullying as the next big issue of adult techno-panic...they didn't minimize the issue, but they also worked to keep in perspective
2008-10-06 21:39:05 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: I really like Nancy Willard's work! She is very persuasive!
2008-10-06 21:39:17 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: @Cindy...I heard her speak last Friday...

2008-10-06 21:41:20 [Message] penny -> -EdTechTalk: still have a teacher that can't really use email
2008-10-06 21:41:24 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: thanks for sharing that Matt-I've never heard her speak but I bought her book!

2008-10-06 21:43:11 [Message] DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: I love that photo, trying to figure out if I can use it in a presentation on how to get teachers to participate (or at least listen) to some of the k12online conference.
2008-10-06 21:43:16 [Message] penny -> -EdTechTalk: What is the fear on the school's part for letting us help?
2008-10-06 21:44:00 [Message] cindy seibel -> -EdTechTalk: call was lost - hopefully back soon!

2008-10-06 22:01:05 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: can we do a followup show? this has been so helpful to hear how Dean approaches this
2008-10-06 22:01:17 [Message] Brian -> -EdTechTalk: did anyone record today's session?
2008-10-06 22:01:22 [Message] penny -> -EdTechTalk: would love to pick dean's brain further
2008-10-06 22:01:35 [Message] Brian -> -EdTechTalk: i had to take care of my 2 yr old for half the time :(
2008-10-06 22:01:38 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: me too!!
2008-10-06 22:01:40 [Message] czautcke -> -EdTechTalk: Yes--Matt is archiving it.
2008-10-06 22:01:47 [Message] Brian -> -EdTechTalk: kk thx
2008-10-06 22:02:03 [Message] cindy seibel -> -EdTechTalk: Archived sessions on http://ourschool.ca
2008-10-06 22:02:31 [Message] penny -> -EdTechTalk: change won't come if someone doesn't push
2008-10-06 22:02:35 [Message] czautcke -> -EdTechTalk: Oops! I said Oct 21--it's Oct. 20 for the next program.
2008-10-06 22:03:17 [Message] DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: Churchill: I am an optimist. It does not seem too much use being anything else.
2008-10-06 22:03:29 [Message] shareski -> -EdTechTalk: Thanks DaveC
2008-10-06 22:03:42 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: Thanks all! very interesting conversation!
2008-10-06 22:03:53 [Message] penny -> -EdTechTalk: time is too short as always
2008-10-06 22:04:04 [Message] DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: great show, thanks
2008-10-06 22:04:10 [Message] jeannine -> -EdTechTalk: thanks Lorna
2008-10-06 22:04:49 [Message] derrallg -> -EdTechTalk: thanks great show
2008-10-06 22:04:59 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: the stream was coming through fine but the connection with Matt seemed to be a problem
2008-10-06 22:05:12 [Message] penny -> -EdTechTalk: Matt was the only problem on my end too
2008-10-06 22:05:52 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: you should talk more about your K12online preso on your show :-)
2008-10-06 22:06:02 [Message] DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: @Peggy, seconded!
2008-10-06 22:06:26 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: it sounds like a pecha kucha presentation--is that 20 slides, 5 minutes?
2008-10-06 22:06:36 [Message] DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: :-)
2008-10-06 22:06:37 [Message] penny -> -EdTechTalk: What would be the best way to cheerlead k12 online in the school -- from a parent!!
2008-10-06 22:07:20 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: there is a flyer you can post if that would help. Wes shared it on the earlier show today
2008-10-06 22:07:32 [Message] DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: Where are the flyers? I couldn't find them.
2008-10-06 22:08:21 [Message] penny -> -EdTechTalk: will have to do something more personal than that -- but I don't want to seem like I am telling them what they should do...
2008-10-06 22:08:35 [Message] penny -> -EdTechTalk: just hi-lite an opportunity
2008-10-06 22:09:24 [Message] shareski -> -EdTechTalk: http://k12onlineconference.org/?p=231
2008-10-06 22:09:40 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: Thanks Dean-I couldn't find the link
2008-10-06 22:10:42 [Message] DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: Thanks!
2008-10-06 22:10:52 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: @penny-I love the concept of the Lan parties where a small group of people come together in someone's living room to watch a presentation or two and talk about it.
2008-10-06 22:11:35 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: you could invite a small group of parents to come and watch something you select that would be timely :-)
2008-10-06 22:11:36 [Message] penny -> -EdTechTalk: Would the presentations be such that parents and teachers should/could watch together ??
2008-10-06 22:11:48 [Message] penny -> -EdTechTalk: thinking same thing same time
2008-10-06 22:12:02 [Message] penny -> -EdTechTalk: certainly the parents as partners would be excellent
2008-10-06 22:12:07 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: absolutely! and you don't have to view them "live" so you can preview and select an appropriate topic
2008-10-06 22:12:18 [Message] shareski -> -EdTechTalk: @Penny....I'm sure some would be, particularly the keynotes
2008-10-06 22:12:55 [Message] penny -> -EdTechTalk: my luck it'll all be blocked at the school ;)
2008-10-06 22:13:42 [Message] DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: @Penny, I think that's a great idea. Biggest problem I've had has been with taxpayers who complain that things were good enough for them 35 years ago, it's good enough now.
2008-10-06 22:14:14 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: maybe you can hold it away from school :-)
2008-10-06 22:14:23 [Message] DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: (NOTE: I didn't say "parents", I've heard it from a variety of community members)
2008-10-06 22:14:44 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: @DaveC--yes! I've heard it from teachers too!
2008-10-06 22:15:01 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: is Matt talking?
2008-10-06 22:15:05 [Message] penny -> -EdTechTalk: Always have access to the community library -- may have to scheme
2008-10-06 22:15:10 [Message] DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: I think I hear someone breathing.
2008-10-06 22:15:45 [Message] DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: Maybe a small, local eatery to keep it really casual
2008-10-06 22:16:06 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: even some of the presentations that show some exciting things being done with technology in schools could be excellent for parents/teachers to watch together and discuss.
2008-10-06 22:16:45 [Message] matt montagne -> -EdTechTalk: sorry I can't b heard!!! Rats!
2008-10-06 22:16:48 [Message] penny -> -EdTechTalk: a small eatery wouldn't have internet -- we are small small town -- we'd cause a real buzz if we did that
2008-10-06 22:17:00 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: food is good! Jeff Utecht did some pizza and beer Lan parties last year :-) can't do that at school
2008-10-06 22:17:11 [Message] penny -> -EdTechTalk: now we're talking
2008-10-06 22:18:18 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: if you have wireless access at someone's home you could even do it in the back yard and have a BBQ or potluck and eat and talk
2008-10-06 22:18:36 [Message] penny -> -EdTechTalk: I am going to work on this -- we have parent council coming up -- supposed to be a parent tech night -- but no parents have been asked to be involved in what is happening -- maybe soon...
2008-10-06 22:19:38 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: we did it last year in someone's home who had wireless access and it worked great! we're planning to do it again. Small group--maybe 8 people
2008-10-06 22:20:18 [Message] penny -> -EdTechTalk: I think the school should give them time to attend -- but maybe next time after they see the value that might happen
2008-10-06 22:20:25 [Message] DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: @Peggy, a wireless lan party.
2008-10-06 22:21:02 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: yes :-) We actually called it a LaWN party to keep the word Lan in it
2008-10-06 22:21:17 [Message] DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: @Penny, it would be great if that could happen. For us, it is happening at 8:00am.
2008-10-06 22:21:45 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: what's happening at 8:00am? everything is archived and can be viewed anytime
2008-10-06 22:21:55 [Message] penny -> -EdTechTalk: Maybe we'll (parents) throw them a k-12 online party -- show that we support them!
2008-10-06 22:22:22 [Message] DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: Doh.
2008-10-06 22:22:25 [Message] DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: I knew that.
2008-10-06 22:22:28 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: @penny-great idea! do it :-) It would be fun!
2008-10-06 22:23:08 [Message] DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: Anyone know when the fireside chats are going to be?
2008-10-06 22:23:19 [Message] penny -> -EdTechTalk: it is just really nervewracking as a parent to tread into that domain
2008-10-06 22:23:20 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: that's such a great point Dean! keep promoting everything!
2008-10-06 22:24:10 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: the fireside chat times aren't posted yet but will be soon
2008-10-06 22:24:57 [Message] DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: We're running into issues with allowing anyone in the classroom who hasn't been fingerprinted first due to FERPA.
2008-10-06 22:24:59 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: wonderful show AND post-show conversation Lorna! Thanks!
2008-10-06 22:25:04 [Message] DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: Although I don't know what the fingerprinting part has to do with it...
2008-10-06 22:25:20 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: Thanks Dean!!!!
2008-10-06 22:25:24 [Message] DaveC -> -EdTechTalk: night all.
2008-10-06 22:25:42 [Message] PeggyG -> -EdTechTalk: Night everyone
2008-10-06 22:26:23 [Message] penny -> -EdTechTalk: night guys -- great show
