Listen in as we kick the tires on a new Drupal site that we will be using this fall to connect our students. This summer Paul Allison and Susan Ettenheim invited Alice Barr, George Mayo, and Chris Sloan to work with Bill Fitzgerald and his colleagues at Funny Monkey to create a Drupal site for Youth Voices. In the weeks to come we will be inviting you to have you join our students as they begin to publish their images, videos, text, and audio on Youth Voices. Please plan to join us.

21:05:28 SusanEttenheim: have you seen it everyone?
21:05:35 SusanEttenheim: youthvoices.net
21:05:49 Maureen/bcdtech: Hi Cheryl! and Alice!
21:06:10 billfitzgerald: people can create accounts on the site
21:07:19 alicebarr: Hi MAureen!
21:07:21 DaveC: Just created mine :-)
21:07:54 Paulallison: http://youthvoices.net
21:07:56 alicebarr: I love the washing machine!!
21:08:53 PeggyG: it's great to see how you are developing the site
21:09:04 SusanEttenheim: welcome back peggy!
21:09:38 George: btw- I teach 6th & 7th grade reading
21:09:49 PeggyG: Phoenix students have been back in school for about 3 weeks in many districts
21:10:32 George: Bill- I also joined up earlier
21:10:47 DaveC: Well, I'm the same :-)
21:10:54 PeggyG: just joined
21:11:48 George: cool- I'm in!
21:12:46 George: Question: how would teachesr go about creating blogs for their students on this site?
21:12:49 PeggyG: I'm in to--I'll edit later :-)
21:13:13 PeggyG: that's encouraging :-)
21:14:46 PeggyG: great points Susan
21:15:31 DaveC: What shows up, the username or the first name? If the username is just for connecting/logging-in, then perhaps it is the "first name" box that is question.
21:15:49 SusanEttenheim: I think the username is just for logging in
21:16:29 George: mass registration- definitely a need for that
21:18:00 gail desler: Beautiful interface, Bill
21:18:02 SusanEttenheim: hi lorna
21:18:06 PeggyG: it looks very simple to navigate
21:18:17 SusanEttenheim: isn't it elegant!! I'm so excited!
21:18:18 Lorna: pls give me the link
21:18:26 SusanEttenheim: youthvoices.net
21:18:46 gail desler: I received mine with activation link
21:19:28 DaveC: I'd like to see the difference.
21:19:30 PeggyG: what will the teacher do in the teacher role?
21:19:38 gail desler: I agree with Susan that students should be able to readily recognize who the teachers are.
21:20:11 PeggyG: I agree too Gail--whether we have a "teacher role" or not we are adults on the site
21:20:12 SusanEttenheim: It was especially fun for my students to receive comments from other teachers!
21:20:50 PeggyG: blame :-)
21:21:10 billfitzgerald: @PeggyG -- lol
21:21:25 DaveC: I see usernames in the posts (posted by: testadmin) and it doesn't say the role.
21:21:30 PeggyG: younger and older teachers?? hmmm
21:21:51 billfitzgerald: http://youthvoices.net/community/q-and-a/78
21:22:11 Maureen/bcdtech: Are you talking about different permissions for what younger and older students can see, or how they can interact, or?
21:22:18 PeggyG: I'm there
21:22:24 SusanEttenheim: do you mean if the person is teacher or student dave?
21:23:35 DaveC: @susan yes. I run some boards on "theboard.net" and that is an often requested feature. So you know what authority the person has when making a post.
21:24:18 PeggyG: Alice you're a super star-already posted to the group!
21:24:26 DaveC: Example: Posted by someuser [admin]
21:24:31 SusanEttenheim: hi ben welcome back!
21:24:35 DaveC: oops, posted by someone - admin
21:24:36 ben_mcnaboe: hello
21:24:37 ben_mcnaboe: thanks
21:24:42 SusanEttenheim: go to youthvoices.net
21:24:50 SusanEttenheim: and join!
21:25:16 SusanEttenheim: interesting dave
21:25:43 gail desler: How do we get to the wiki?
21:25:51 billfitzgerald: http://youthvoices.net/groups-directory
21:25:54 SusanEttenheim: http://youthvoices.net/groups-directory
21:26:59 PeggyG: that is a great way to organize the groups
21:27:44 PeggyG: can we join any visible group once they are set up?
21:28:02 PeggyG: yes
21:28:10 DaveC: Yes :-)
21:28:16 Maureen/bcdtech: yes
21:28:29 SusanEttenheim: great everyone!
21:28:32 Lorna: yes but I am not able to post do I have the right permissions
21:28:39 PeggyG: it's actually working for me--I usually get lost but you're doing a great job of explaining it
21:29:03 PeggyG: so private groups could still appear on my list?
21:29:22 PeggyG: I just couldn't join them, right? if they're private
21:29:53 PeggyG: should we refresh when you finish making the changes?
21:30:39 DaveC: Q: Do we need to log out and back in again?
21:30:40 billfitzgerald: http://youthvoices.net/node/add/community
21:30:47 PeggyG: thanks for clarifying private groups
21:31:10 PeggyG: no F5 on Mac
21:31:25 DaveC: thanks.
21:31:41 DaveC: Tech'ing to the oldies
21:33:04 gail desler: Bill, thanks for thinking about middle school concerns
21:33:35 PeggyG: none of the boxes are checked for me as default
21:33:50 SusanEttenheim: look lower on the list peggy
21:34:00 PeggyG: open is greyed out-not a choice
21:34:24 PeggyG: oh I see-if private is checked then open isn't an option
21:34:31 SusanEttenheim: exactly
21:35:24 PeggyG: me too! I called mine Just Learning
21:35:38 SusanEttenheim: peggy is it private?
21:35:40 billfitzgerald: http://youthvoices.net/community/q-and-a/78
21:36:18 billfitzgerald: http://youthvoices.net/node/add/group_discuss?gids=78
21:37:05 PeggyG: I'm not seeing my group yet-is it private? I'll check
21:38:37 PeggyG: I can't find my way back to edit my group to change private
21:39:09 PeggyG: found it-changed it to open
21:39:25 George: thx for that description Bill
21:39:26 Maureen/bcdtech: If you want to add images, etc... they are links, not uploads- correct?
21:40:12 DaveC: Q: on the group creation page, did you say the 2nd box would be changed to say "subject" instead of "description"?
21:40:48 PeggyG: where do we go to approve members?
21:41:31 Maureen/bcdtech: How do you a mission?
21:41:44 Maureen/bcdtech: I see the box, but don't know how to add it.
21:42:04 gail desler: I can't see the group I created and don't see where I go back in to edit.
21:42:11 Maureen/bcdtech: Nefver mind- found it
21:42:57 DaveC: @gail, to edit go to "my profile" then click on your group and look for the "Edit" tab
21:43:57 PeggyG: I discovered I could get to my group from my profile. Then click on edit to revise the settings
21:44:44 gail desler: I hear you but i need to work with microphone
21:45:08 Maureen/bcdtech: I'm confused about adding images- in the box you can not browse, upload... but in the add content you can. what's the difference?
21:45:26 SusanEttenheim: good question maureen
21:46:27 PeggyG: how do we see our role on the page--whether we are a teacher or student? what's different on our page?
21:47:15 PeggyG: ok-post questions in Q/A?
21:47:36 PeggyG: how do you copy/paste the chat?
21:47:53 DaveC: Does there need to be a coppa statement?
21:47:55 Lorna: Can't thank you enough for this lesson
21:47:57 SusanEttenheim: peggy you can often highlight text and drag it to the chat
21:48:03 PeggyG: it won't let me copy it by just highlighting the text
21:48:13 Lorna: it is such a great example of teaching technology using technology
21:48:21 SusanEttenheim: peggy can you drag it?
21:48:27 PeggyG: drag it where?
21:49:00 DaveC: The chat transcript could be posted afterwards, when it is available on the net.
21:49:21 billfitzgerald: http://youthvoices.net/community/q-and-a/78
21:49:25 Maureen/bcdtech: @Peggy try Ctrl C/ Ctrl V or command c /v on a mac... works for me
21:49:34 PeggyG: got it to drag to an email mesage-awesome!
21:49:43 PeggyG: I've been wanting to know how to do that!
21:50:11 George: will studnets be able to customize their blogs
21:50:35 billfitzgerald: http://youthvoices.net/node/107
21:51:17 PeggyG: command c/v on my Mac isn't an option with the chat window. When you highlight and drag is it now text or image?
21:52:09 Maureen/bcdtech: I just highlited- did ctrl c- opened word- did ctrl v and it copied and pasted.. PC
21:52:33 PeggyG: dragging worked for me and it is now text in an email message window. Thanks!!!
21:53:19 Maureen/bcdtech: where's more?
21:53:52 SusanEttenheim: under recent activity - do you see more?
21:54:22 Maureen/bcdtech: must be in the wrong place- I see recent posts
21:54:35 PeggyG: I'm seeing recent posts too.
21:54:55 SusanEttenheim: I'm on my profile page - are you?

21:55:29 PeggyG: yes
21:55:42 Maureen/bcdtech: ah thank you Susan- knew I was in the wrong spot

21:57:26 SusanEttenheim: lol dave
21:57:27 PeggyG: where do we go to approve member requests for our group?
21:58:03 PeggyG: simple and complicated???

21:58:26 PeggyG: yes
21:58:31 Maureen/bcdtech: @Peggy- I got an email link for approval
22:00:14 PeggyG: oh thanks-I hadn't checked there. Just added a bookmark and that was easy :-)
22:00:29 George: susan- my question goes with that one- when can we start creating student blogs?
22:01:28 Maureen/bcdtech: is there a glossary of terms? I'm unsure of the group definitions
22:01:30 PeggyG: can I join your digital photography group? Sounds like fun
22:01:44 SusanEttenheim: please peggy!
22:01:55 PeggyG: Yeah! I'll be there!
22:02:15 SusanEttenheim: will you take pictures of your state too?
22:02:32 Maureen/bcdtech: is that a + or plus?
22:02:32 SusanEttenheim: or neighborhood being careful to avoid... this is my housr
22:03:02 gail desler: plus
22:03:06 PeggyG: got the url wrong-took me to a google search page
22:03:17 DaveC: POtentially, wouldn't it be any teacher?
22:03:21 SusanEttenheim: hum I have it wrong too
22:03:22 PeggyG: I do that regularly and could easily share some
22:03:39 PeggyG: lots of photos from Desert Botanical Gardens and Sedona :-)
22:03:47 gail desler: I didn't see box for tags in blog
22:04:20 PeggyG: i added some tags to my bookmarked site
22:04:25 Maureen/bcdtech: I couldn'
22:04:31 Maureen/bcdtech: I couldn'
22:04:33 PeggyG: they were keywords
22:04:47 Maureen/bcdtech: tI couldn't find the mass login spot
22:04:57 Maureen/bcdtech: and I can no longer type
22:05:21 PeggyG: oh oh Maureen-can you refresh?
22:05:43 DaveC: Q: Could we add students and restrict them to blogs? In 5th grade, I might need to keep them restricted to my blog and those of their classmates.
22:06:41 PeggyG: I have learned so much tonight!! Thank you for walking us through this.
22:07:11 SusanEttenheim: peggy maybe you can participate but also help bring students and teachers in your area into the community
22:07:17 SusanEttenheim: the more the better!
22:07:43 Maureen/bcdtech: This is going to take me a bit to figure out. Have to come back and spend more time. Got to go bake for faculty potluck tomorrow.
22:07:46 PeggyG: Sure I could do that. I meet with ed tech people regularly who work with teachers in schools.
22:08:08 Maureen/bcdtech: Thank you! Will check in later to play around with it.
22:08:41 Lorna: Thanks so much for all the great information and hard work
22:09:00 Lorna: Bill does a great job
22:09:05 PeggyG: @Susan-do you plan to provide some guidelines for the kinds of photos and info you want people to share?
22:09:22 SusanEttenheim: good question peggy
22:09:34 SusanEttenheim: how do you suggest we do that?
22:10:10 PeggyG: just getting started I think it would be good to pick a focus-like classroom environment, or scenery or something like that
22:10:26 PeggyG: you could post them in a welcome message in your group
22:11:03 PeggyG: I think it would be fantastic if they posted photos and then talked about how they plan to use their photos
22:11:33 PeggyG: good use for tags :-)
22:11:45 George: good night! thx Paul, Susan, Alice, and Bill :)
22:11:53 SusanEttenheim: night Paul
22:12:02 SusanEttenheim: ugh George! sorry
22:12:23 DaveC: Q: Could we add students and restrict them to blogs? In 5th grade, I might need to keep them restricted to my blog and those of their classmates.
22:12:45 PeggyG: extra credit :-)
22:13:35 PeggyG: yes! I can imagine they might say-I want to create a voicethread, etc.
22:14:46 PeggyG: so a teacher could create multiple private groups for different classes
22:14:48 DaveC: But a private group would allow only those to post to a specific blog, but I can't have them (using an account I set up for them) posting to other groups and read other groups.
22:16:31 PeggyG: Is there a group mission or purpose statement or description that explains this site?
22:17:33 PeggyG: yes saw that :-)
22:17:44 gail desler: Huge thank you, Bill!
22:17:47 PeggyG: that would be great!
22:18:09 PeggyG: Wow thanks to all of you!
22:18:17 billfitzgerald: Thanks, all!
22:18:38 DaveC: Is there an ETA to when this will be ready for primetime?
22:18:53 PeggyG: I don't have any students but would love to join some groups and then share them with teachers to get involved
22:19:12 PeggyG: ESL groups would be perfect for Phoenix area!
22:19:28 PeggyG: This is so exciting!
22:20:58 PeggyG: LOL-lots of projects!
22:21:00 gail desler: Night all.
22:21:25 PeggyG: Good night everyone
22:21:42 DaveC: Thanks
23:11:58 edublogger: Good Evening
23:12:38 edublogger: I have accessed this from the teachers teaching teachers site
23:14:25 edublogger: the comment about teachers feeling asthough they have failed in some way is concerning. Who said that and why?
