2008-12-07 11:42:54 [Message] Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: Hi Sheila
2008-12-07 11:43:21 [Message] jdbecker -> -EdTechTalk: Matthew, how extensively are admissions officers looking at the online profiles of applicants?
2008-12-07 11:43:23 [Message] sheila a -> -EdTechTalk: Hi Maureen!
2008-12-07 11:43:27 [Message] colleenk -> -EdTechTalk: I have an unbelievable story about googling a teacher that I will have to tell F2F on day.
2008-12-07 11:44:07 [Message] matthewktabor -> -EdTechTalk: i'm less in tune with BA-level admissions practices, but i think it depends on how tech-savvy the admissions consultant is
2008-12-07 11:44:16 [Message] matthewktabor -> -EdTechTalk: oops - officer, not consultant
2008-12-07 11:44:28 [Message] Cathy E -> -EdTechTalk: I had all my new teachers in my district use searchme.com
2008-12-07 11:44:44 [Message] Cathy E -> -EdTechTalk: See what comes up?
2008-12-07 11:44:50 [Message] Scott Shelhart -> -EdTechTalk: My favorite quote " Digital footprints are made in cement, not sand"
2008-12-07 11:46:36 [Message] Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: I agree Lisa. I live 50 minutes from school and I appreciate my privacy, not that I am worried about anything I do, but students can misinterpret easily.
2008-12-07 11:49:01 [Message] jdbecker -> -EdTechTalk: There are legal standards for those questions
2008-12-07 11:49:24 [Message] colleenk -> -EdTechTalk: Is it really "your space" if everyone can access it?
2008-12-07 11:49:25 [Message] Lisa Parisi -> -EdTechTalk: What are the legal standards?
2008-12-07 11:49:45 [Message] Cathy E -> -EdTechTalk: Just because we are teachers does not mean we are not human
2008-12-07 11:50:19 [Message] Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: I think our adult viewpoints re religion or politics need to be kept out of the classroom or offline. At least away from places where students can access.
2008-12-07 11:50:31 [Message] jdbecker -> -EdTechTalk: should teachers be free to be critical of their employers?
2008-12-07 11:50:45 [Message] Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: BUt they are "private" lives!
2008-12-07 11:51:03 [Message] Lisa Parisi -> -EdTechTalk: ANyone else want into the skype chat?
2008-12-07 11:51:15 [Message] alfredtwo -> -EdTechTalk: I think that all employees (not just teachers) have to be careful of being critical of their employers
2008-12-07 11:51:33 [Message] Cathy E -> -EdTechTalk: I agree, I am over 21 and if I want to have a glass of wine at dinner, I think that is OK
2008-12-07 11:52:06 [Message] Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: I think that if I stated my personal religious views in the classroom that because of my position I have a different power and influence on those kids
2008-12-07 11:53:04 [Message] jdbecker -> -EdTechTalk: these issues have been played out in courts of law
2008-12-07 11:53:05 [Message] Lisa Parisi -> -EdTechTalk: But Maureen, what about out of the classroom?  Online?
2008-12-07 11:53:42 [Message] daibarnes -> -EdTechTalk: BNP members details leaked onto the net
2008-12-07 11:53:58 [Message] daibarnes -> -EdTechTalk: a policeman was suspended because he is a member
2008-12-07 11:54:00 [Message] Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: @Lisa- anything I put online I have to view as public... there is a reason I don't blog- not a good enough filter and no more room for addtioanl feet in my mouth
2008-12-07 11:54:05 [Message] jdbecker -> -EdTechTalk: what about the case of the NYC teacher who was a member of NAMBLA?
2008-12-07 11:54:26 [Message] Lisa Parisi -> -EdTechTalk: What was the outcome of the case, JD?
2008-12-07 11:54:33 [Message] colleenk -> -EdTechTalk: @jdbecker What happened?
2008-12-07 11:54:44 [Message] jdbecker -> -EdTechTalk: his termination was upheld
2008-12-07 11:55:15 [Message] jdbecker -> -EdTechTalk: his actions were deemed to have sufficiently disrupted the school environment
2008-12-07 11:55:41 [Message] matthewktabor -> -EdTechTalk: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/educationnews/3491127/No-teachers-w...
2008-12-07 11:55:45 [Message] daibarnes -> -EdTechTalk: isn't there a recent USA case of a teacher saying negative things about her school on facebook and was suspended??
2008-12-07 11:55:50 [Message] colleenk -> -EdTechTalk: @jdbecker Glad to hear that.
2008-12-07 11:55:52 [Message] matthewktabor -> -EdTechTalk: that's a link to the BNP/teacher story
2008-12-07 11:56:43 [Message] Scott Shelhart -> -EdTechTalk: As a preservice teacher, I've been afraid to blog.  I'm afraid to make one mistake that might affect my job.
2008-12-07 11:56:53 [Message] Lisa Parisi -> -EdTechTalk: http://www.charlotteobserver.com/597/story/349354.html
2008-12-07 11:57:06 [Message] Lisa Parisi -> -EdTechTalk: This is the facebook article.
2008-12-07 11:57:19 [Message] jdbecker -> -EdTechTalk: we really need to consider the chilling effect on future teachers if we hold them to a standard of sitting at home and twiddling their thumbs
2008-12-07 11:57:28 [Message] Lisa Parisi -> -EdTechTalk: Anyone else want in?
2008-12-07 11:57:33 [Message] Lisa Parisi -> -EdTechTalk: To the skype call?
2008-12-07 11:57:51 [Message] Lisa Parisi -> -EdTechTalk: JD?
2008-12-07 11:57:57 [Message] Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: My daughter (26) has totally revamped her myspace/facebook pages because she is now a teacher. I used to use her as a bad example for my middle school kids. Her parents at the school check her page.
2008-12-07 11:58:14 [Message] gary -> -EdTechTalk: I taught at a rural school about 30 years ago. I went to a bar in a nearby town with a friend one weekend. The principal (important in his local church) said I was seen in a bar and he wanted to talk about it. My answer - which of your church members complained and what where they doing in the bar? He refused to answer and we never spoke of it again. I  had a better opportunity a few months later and left the school.
2008-12-07 11:58:15 [Message] jdbecker -> -EdTechTalk: Lisa, I would, but I'm likely to be called into parenting responsibilities at any moment
2008-12-07 11:59:52 [Message] derrallg -> -EdTechTalk: I'm upset because my district just bought the software to allow them to be tied into the state system for arrests, so they will know if I get any sort of charge
2008-12-07 12:00:03 [Message] Cathy E -> -EdTechTalk: We go out many Fridays as a staff, to a bar, and the principal buys :)
2008-12-07 12:00:43 [Message] Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: Do you think that as a teacher your activities or speech online have an undue influence on kids- since you are an authority figure to them?
2008-12-07 12:00:45 [Message] matthewktabor -> -EdTechTalk: since we're talking delicious brews, i'd recommend that you all peep www.ommegang.com , cooperstown's belgian brewery :)
2008-12-07 12:01:19 [Message] jdbecker -> -EdTechTalk: but has your behavior changed in the face of Web 2.0?
2008-12-07 12:01:30 [Message] Lisa Parisi -> -EdTechTalk: Yes, JD
2008-12-07 12:01:35 [Message] Lisa Parisi -> -EdTechTalk: I think about it often
2008-12-07 12:02:20 [Message] derrallg -> -EdTechTalk: I always modify my language if I think a parent might read something inapropriate into it
2008-12-07 12:02:58 [Message] jdbecker -> -EdTechTalk: it's not illegal to advocate for it
2008-12-07 12:03:54 [Message] gary -> -EdTechTalk: What about belonging to a secular-humanist group or athiest group while teaching in a school with a high religious population?
2008-12-07 12:04:38 [Message] Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: The gray area is very tought to navigate- if you are passionate about gay rights for ie... if you blog about it- would this be disruptive to your school?
2008-12-07 12:04:47 [Message] matthewktabor -> -EdTechTalk: maureen - good example
2008-12-07 12:04:52 [Message] derrallg -> -EdTechTalk: I think we are fortunate in that as adults we don't have the online past that our children will have and aren't capable of reflecting on what they post
2008-12-07 12:05:49 [Message] jdbecker -> -EdTechTalk: Maureen - I've suggested that we need to change the "disruption" standard to one about "harm"
2008-12-07 12:06:12 [Message] Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: @jdbecker- better but still subjective
2008-12-07 12:06:58 [Message] jdbecker -> -EdTechTalk: Maureen - all legal terms are open to interpretation (to some degree)
2008-12-07 12:07:26 [Message] jdbecker -> -EdTechTalk: but if a student is a finalist on American Idol and everyone is talking about it, that's a disruption
2008-12-07 12:07:39 [Message] matthewktabor -> -EdTechTalk: kick her out!
2008-12-07 12:07:41 [Message] matthewktabor -> -EdTechTalk: ;)
2008-12-07 12:07:42 [Message] Scott Shelhart -> -EdTechTalk: It doesn't matter if you are having a beer or not.  If you are rude and mean to the waitress it will do more damage to your reputation than any drink will.
2008-12-07 12:08:36 [Message] Cathy E -> -EdTechTalk: I agree, Scott
2008-12-07 12:08:52 [Message] Cathy E -> -EdTechTalk: have to run - great show
2008-12-07 12:09:00 [Message] Lisa Parisi -> -EdTechTalk: Bye Cathy
2008-12-07 12:09:02 [Message] Scott Shelhart -> -EdTechTalk: Bye Cathy
2008-12-07 12:09:04 [Message] Lisa Parisi -> -EdTechTalk: Thanks for coming
2008-12-07 12:10:00 [Message] jdbecker -> -EdTechTalk: Lisa, are you in Jericho?
2008-12-07 12:10:08 [Message] Lisa Parisi -> -EdTechTalk: No John but close
2008-12-07 12:10:14 [Message] Lisa Parisi -> -EdTechTalk: Herricks
2008-12-07 12:10:25 [Message] jdbecker -> -EdTechTalk: ah, good ol' Herricks
2008-12-07 12:10:28 [Message] Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: @Maria- I used to do Peace instead of holidays
2008-12-07 12:10:57 [Message] Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: @maria- I got into trouble for trying to avoid halloween.
2008-12-07 12:11:54 [Message] Scott Shelhart -> -EdTechTalk: I got some flack for collecting excess halloween candy to send to the troops in Iraq.
2008-12-07 12:12:21 [Message] Lisa Parisi -> -EdTechTalk: Really Scott...what was the reasoning?
2008-12-07 12:12:41 [Message] jdbecker -> -EdTechTalk: for those of you who blog, do you make it an extension of your work or do you try to maintain separation?
2008-12-07 12:13:07 [Message] Lisa Parisi -> -EdTechTalk: I blog about education and sometimes my classroom but I also have a disclaimer on my blog.
2008-12-07 12:13:10 [Message] Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: @ilsa I get questions about God when I teach science to 1-3... I just smile and say that I teach science and they have to talk to their parents about God.
2008-12-07 12:13:17 [Message] Scott Shelhart -> -EdTechTalk: It was a Cub Scout function.  One outsider was very anti-war.  I think it was just misdirected anger, but it caught me a bit off gaurd
2008-12-07 12:15:55 [Message] Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: Most of the kids/parents were strong Obama fans- but a few staunch rebublicans- I shut down conversations because it made a small group of kids visibly upset.
2008-12-07 12:16:39 [Message] jdbecker -> -EdTechTalk: what about putting a political "button" on your blog?
2008-12-07 12:16:53 [Message] Lisa Parisi -> -EdTechTalk: That I would do John.
2008-12-07 12:17:02 [Message] matthewktabor -> -EdTechTalk: if it's a personal blog, disclaimer - content doesn't reflect the school
2008-12-07 12:17:05 [Message] matthewktabor -> -EdTechTalk: etc
2008-12-07 12:17:22 [Message] jdbecker -> -EdTechTalk: but is there a nexus between the blog and the school?
2008-12-07 12:17:24 [Message] Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: I guess I wonder what "outside of school" means now?
2008-12-07 12:18:01 [Message] derrallg -> -EdTechTalk: If you celebrate diversity are we always neutral in how we present ourselves?
2008-12-07 12:18:17 [Message] matthewktabor -> -EdTechTalk: no reason to be neutral - every reason to be tolerant
2008-12-07 12:18:35 [Message] Scott Shelhart -> -EdTechTalk: well said, Matt
2008-12-07 12:20:01 [Message] jdbecker -> -EdTechTalk: Matthew, would you suggest that teachers make disclaimers on their blogs?
2008-12-07 12:20:41 [Message] derrallg -> -EdTechTalk: @mathew how would you be tolerent if say you believe in evolution with children taught creationism?
2008-12-07 12:22:18 [Message] derrallg -> -EdTechTalk: in my science class yes
2008-12-07 12:22:33 [Message] jdbecker -> -EdTechTalk: but what about college students who want to become teachers...should they curtail their "behaviors" knowing that some day they'll be teachers?
2008-12-07 12:23:32 [Message] matthewktabor -> -EdTechTalk: some disciplines require conformity even at the graduate levle
2008-12-07 12:23:39 [Message] gary -> -EdTechTalk: For evolution, my answer has always been that you should know the arguments of those who you disagree with if you want to discuss the issue in an intelligent way.
2008-12-07 12:24:01 [Message] Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: @matthew- it's Ok to disagree as adults but we can really affect/influence kids with our opinions. Is it fair/right to allow ourselves to do this?
2008-12-07 12:24:23 [Message] derrallg -> -EdTechTalk: I teach elementary and middle school so the children's attitudes are shaped by parents
2008-12-07 12:25:00 [Message] jdbecker -> -EdTechTalk: gotta run...
2008-12-07 12:26:40 [Message] Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: When kids come into a classroom with what I consider right wing fundamentalist views- science  can turn into a hot topic. I just duck and refer back to parents.
2008-12-07 12:27:16 [Message] derrallg -> -EdTechTalk: @maureen that's what I do too
2008-12-07 12:28:39 [Message] matthewktabor -> -EdTechTalk: here's a link re: social work programs requiring conformity:  http://www.nas.org/polimage.cfm?doc_Id=26&size_code=Doc
2008-12-07 12:29:29 [Message] derrallg -> -EdTechTalk: @maria that's what I observed yesterday, I passed out the scholastic new and I heard "Obama sucks" I was really taken back
2008-12-07 12:29:41 [Message] matthewktabor -> -EdTechTalk: taken back why?
2008-12-07 12:30:35 [Message] derrallg -> -EdTechTalk: @mathew in my family I'm a democrat and ;my parents are republicans so we've learned to use respectful language
2008-12-07 12:32:10 [Message] Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: What about some of the blogs online that talk about how teachers are resitant to technology... not professional because they won't keep up, etc. I have the same issues, but if I blogged about them and my colleagues read it, or the students, parents- that would be an issue for me.
2008-12-07 12:32:33 [Message] MariaK -> -EdTechTalk: hi john
2008-12-07 12:32:42 [Message] woodenmask -> -EdTechTalk: Hi Maria!
2008-12-07 12:33:50 [Message] Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: @Maria- you're always good- even offline!
2008-12-07 12:34:09 [Message] matthewktabor -> -EdTechTalk: maureen, i face this issue myself with criticizing the qualifications of teachers and the applicant pool for teacher programs
2008-12-07 12:34:23 [Message] derrallg -> -EdTechTalk: @Maria you're such a firebrand
2008-12-07 12:34:30 [Message] Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: @matthew- do you blog about it?
2008-12-07 12:34:45 [Message] matthewktabor -> -EdTechTalk: yes
2008-12-07 12:36:11 [Message] Maureen -> -EdTechTalk: @matthew- If you were closely associated with a school- would it not come off as being critical of your colleagues or school? For my school- that's not OK to be critical outside of the school.
2008-12-07 12:36:28 [Message] woodenmask -> -EdTechTalk: I feel like I have to keep my political opinions to myself - I teach middle school social studies and one of my main goals for my students for the year is to develop their own opinions. I know that some of my guys might look up some of my writing online and that would interfere with the development of their own views.

Greetings,
New listener, but someone should have edited the tantrum out in the background,didn't sound good.

I agree. I believe that you should re-edit
