19:12:51 Gary -> Does "competitive" mean "political"?

19:14:24 Bud Hunt -> Not necessarily, Gary.  The intention is that it's a merit based competition.

19:15:28 Gary -> Thanks Bud - I am similar to Dave in that I do not completely understand the American education system.

19:15:54 bcrosby -> Hmmm, can't hear ...

19:16:26 Gary -> @bcrosby - Use EdTech Talk A

19:17:27 bcrosby -> Thanks, got it!!!

19:17:55 PeggyG -> Race to the Top seems quite political from my vantage point--some states applied for extensions to see what made it through the first round...

19:23:07 bcrosby -> Same with RTTT issues ... I've been trying to engage them @Edpressec there too.

19:28:05 dave -> i feel like i'm arguing against the rhizome... but that's not quite what i mean

19:28:16 robd -> Agreed...people can't understand social media until they do it for themselves and see the result

19:29:36 cyndidannerkuhn -> I will conact my congressman, all of them, than ks for alerting us to this issue.

19:29:52 PeggyG -> is the most important step to take sending the letters/signing the petition to Congress people?

19:37:03 aforgrave (Andrew) -> TEDxOntarioEd is taking place April 9th in London, Ontario.

19:37:03 bcrosby -> The "Ignite" programs are similar and are happening all over the country. I did one here in Reno last summer.

19:37:22 PeggyG -> the Ignite programs are similar but not all focused on education

19:37:37 jackiegerstein -> http://www.ted.com/tedx

19:37:45 tomfullerton -> lessig's is posted: http://blip.tv/file/3309463/

19:37:53 JenM -> @aforgrave ... ok ... great! another ED based tedx

19:38:08 cyndidannerkuhn -> so where is Chris' presentation posted, I would love to share it with my pre-service teachers.  link???

19:38:20 dendari -> Loved Dan Meyer

19:38:24 tomfullerton -> anyone have the link to chris's presentation?

19:38:35 bcrosby -> @PeggyG yes, but you can do whatever you want and I think it delivers an audience that educators don't always get to talk to.

19:38:52 jackiegerstein -> I found David Wiley's & Jeff Jarvis stimulating

19:38:55 PeggyG -> I agree bcrosby! I've attended the Ignite Phoenix events

19:39:53 bcrosby -> I don't think their presos are up yet ... to be posted in future.

19:40:09 JohnS -> http://www.invisiblechildren.com/home.php

19:40:15 jackiegerstein -> http://weblogg-ed.com/2010/tedxnyed-amazingso-what/

19:40:37 jackiegerstein -> Yes - invisible children is great!

19:40:47 bcrosby -> Hi Dean!

19:40:57 monika -> we have one of their kids coming to our school mar 18

19:41:08 shareski -> Hi, going to make chicken wings and listen to the brilliance of Mr. Zac

19:41:53 bcrosby -> D'Arcy had a post about Ted a few weeks back ... maybe you already talked about that though

19:41:58 JohnS -> Shareski in the chatroom? I'm star stuck.

19:42:54 shareski -> @JohnS you must be watching the Oscars

19:43:02 dave ->  wonder if shareski left the bbq for long enough to listen to tedx yesterday

19:43:24 JohnS -> Aren't the Neighbours having an Oscar party, Dean?

19:43:44 shareski -> @John, they just left..we entertained for a change

19:44:00 jackiegerstein -> http://teleogistic.net/2010/03/whats-wrong-with-tedxnyed/  Blog

19:44:38 robd -> it was probably the conversations in between the lectures that were more interesting

19:44:47 tomfullerton -> lectures to adults by inspirational speakers is different than K-12

19:44:53 aforgrave (Andrew) -> but there was considerable chatter between listeners enabled via tech -- different dynamic from traditional ???

19:45:28 jackiegerstein -> I love a good lecture - but do good lectures facilitate change?

19:45:47 aforgrave (Andrew) -> anyone in the audience yesterday in NY?  passive listeners, or a lot of folks simultaneously in the room and online

19:45:49 bcrosby -> Sir Ken Robinson, supposedly says  he spent 100 hours prepping his Ted talk on Creativity that is so popular.

19:45:53 JohnS -> yes, but there are times when lectures to K12 can be just as inspirational. It just doesn't happen every day with every teacher.

19:45:54 shareski -> lecture=presentation=communication it's what we do everyday...just that we want to give lots a chance to "lecture"....and not for 45 minutes straight

19:46:23 robd -> a good lecturer is very rare

19:46:26 JohnS -> @bcrosby I've spent 100 hours on many presentations that went significantly less well.

19:46:27 jackiegerstein -> I think we need to differentiate between lecture and discourse

19:46:53 bcrosby -> The Ted talk "lectures" , at least the most popular ones, are also highly entertaining.

19:47:07 robd -> @jackiegerstein - what IS the difference between lecture and discourse?

19:47:23 Gary -> Maybe we need to sit around the campfire more often.

19:47:31 bcrosby -> @JohnS - really? 100 hours on an 18 minute preso?

19:47:32 tomfullerton -> we can lecture effectively in K-12 but it is over-used by less inspirational speakers

19:47:51 JohnS -> @brcrosby mine was 45 minutes, but yes.

19:47:51 robd -> @gary Aren't we sitting around a campfire right now?

19:47:54 shareski -> Zac's recent post about his student giving a lecture was pretty amazing

19:48:11 jackiegerstein -> @rob - one way vs. two way communication - awareness of presence of the other - voice by both sides

19:48:20 tomfullerton -> this pendulum swing in ed'l reform - lecture is "bad" lecture is "good" .....

19:48:26 tomfullerton -> can be both

19:48:30 Gary -> @robd - Good point! More often?

19:48:35 bcrosby -> Wow!

19:48:44 jackiegerstein -> We are engaged in discource

19:48:48 jackiegerstein -> discourse

19:48:52 tomfullerton -> how is this affected by the backchannel?

19:48:58 robd -> i wonder if you have to be a good listener before you can be a good lecturer?

19:49:09 tomfullerton -> do we enter into an asynchronous / synchronous discourse?

19:49:11 jackiegerstein -> Twitter during the talks yesterday made it more engaging for me

19:49:36 bcrosby -> I can't even imagine having 100 hours to spend on a presentation.

19:49:36 aforgrave (Andrew) -> What about the "expert" dynamic created by the lecturer --- yesterday, Jeff Jarvis welcomed "the people formerly known as the audience," acknowledging the changing role of the "listeners" ...

19:49:49 robd -> @jackiegerstein Yep, I enjoyed Twitter watching while sitting at the CUE conference in California where they were talking in NY

19:50:04 jackiegerstein -> isn't it such fun, Rob?!?

19:50:06 bcrosby -> Not even 10 hours ...

19:50:09 JenM -> all the links we won't get to tonight ... http://delicious.com/edtechtalk/20100307

19:50:11 PeggyG -> oooohhhh robd! what a great multitasker!!

19:50:51 bcrosby -> Bye!

19:51:03 lorenchuk -> Enjoyed it Thank you!

19:52:22 jackiegerstein -> next

19:52:25 robd -> Doesn't YouTube have some type of feature that makes transcripts from recordings?

19:52:45 PeggyG -> you have to provide the transcript for YouTube to get the captions on dotsub

19:53:09 dawn -> @jackiegerstein  i want to know too

19:53:11 PeggyG -> very stimulating conversation tonight!!!!

19:53:17 cyndidannerkuhn -> thnaks good show, very interesting

19:53:27 Gary -> Dave always has Oscar time.
